I have a bottle of Spring Bank I haven’t opened yet. Not quite that price, but not far off (it was a gift)
Gunpowder Proof: Prior to the invention of the hydrometer, the Royal Navy ship’s “Pusser” shutdown claims of watering down sailors’ daily tots by dousing a bit of gunpowder in the rum and attempting to light. If the mixture ignited, the rum was “at proof.” If it didn’t, the Pusser might find himself tossed to sea. Alc/Vol: 54.5%
Yes,my dad told me about that. Ex navy we always had rum in, Lambs Navy or Wood's 100 proof. He used to get a bottle of Pussers every year from someone in the ex naval association when it was not generally available.I didn't get as much of that as the others. He always said that the Pussers later on when someone bought the rights after the navy stopped issuing the rum ration wasn't quite as good. Original bottles of it go for a fair amount nowadays. It was because of Pussers I found out what was necessary to be called a Navy Rum.Hadn't thought about why were called that and others weren't.
We went to a small distillery near Pitlochrie a couple of years ago. Not that one. Glenturret I think it was called. Beautiful area
We still carry on with the ‘tot time’ tradition at our annual HMS Tiger reunions. It is still a holy ritual.
I believe there are a few scattered around Fife(I'm currently in St Andrews for a few days).I'll be going to the whisky shop in town at some point so if they're knowledgeable,I'll ask the question
Really nice place Is St Andrews . Belting little Ice Cream parlour my missus was on about it at the weekend
Apparently there is a distillery fairly close to St Andrews.Kingsbarns distillery is somewhere South of St Andrews heading for Crail?(Google would give you better info). I haven't tried it,infact I'd never heard of it but I'm going for a pint today and if the pub sells it I'll try it and let you know. Think the ice cream parlour is 'Jannettas '?
It is. It's the upmarket version of it, you have to be careful though because when you start getting towards the dregs you find at the end of it you're liable to find yourself in a graveyard
