How many fecking chances did our defence need to clear the ball before Millwalls 3rd goal?

Mariappa woefully short pass to Kalas who was far too weak in his challenge for the 4th.

Yet again a piss weak midfield performance, slow, predictable and non creative, beaten up all afternoon, there is nobody in the midfield strong enough to stand up to the physical challenges in the championship. And also an incompetent defensive display, worst I have ever seen Kalas play.

No leaders/organisers anywhere in our squad not one, we need a leader/organiser at the back and another in midfield.

Millwall kicked the **** out of our kids today and not one senior player stood up for them, ****ing shameful.

Hunt, Mariappa, Rowe and Sessegnon need to be gone, I would probably add Nagy to that list and jury remains firmly out with Lansbury and Wells.

After a season to forget Nigel still cannot get an ounce of effort out of this bunch of losers and I fear for us going in to next year's campaign. The motivation is non-existent and the performances are even worse and yet these mercenaries still get paid good money after bad and feel they have the right to call themselves professional footballers. En masse they should be ashamed by their lack of effort and I just hope many of them will never wear the red of Bristol City again and struggle to find new employers who will fall for their apathetic attitudes.

Our attempts over the last 10 years to claim a spot in a higher division have been a total joke given our managerial appointments and the subsequent load of dross that was hired under their various watches. And so here we are under what should be better stewardship expecting things to change, and I believe they will, but looking at what Pearson has inherited I wonder if the new path taken will lead us anywhere or will there be the usual City heartache along the way? Surely there are players available that could bring us better fortune than the current bunch but will they buy in to the promises made by City management or will they just pass us by on the way to anywhere else?

Forget about the garbage being served up by a load of no-hopers and let's turn our attention to the off season and the prospect of seeing a better future being forged.

'Short of confidence' - How the Bristol City players rated in embarrassing loss at Millwall
Our City reporter's view from The Den as the Robins were thrashed 4-1 in their final away game of the season

    Max O'Leary - 6

Beaten convincingly by Wallace's angled drive in the opening minutes but had easy pickups when the same player fired a low free-kick at him and Bradshaw shot low from inside the box. Wasn't able to dominate on set-pieces in the second half as Mitchell scored before Bradshaw wrapped it up.

    Nathan Baker - 6
A first start of the season and showed at times what the Robins have missed for large parts: a physically dominant defender in the middle as he won header after header here. A decent return to action despite the team result.

    Tomas Kalas - 4
His clearance from McNamara fell straight to Malone as little distance was found, with the Millwall man punishing City. And worse was to come as the skipper was robbed by Bradshaw in the second half to allow the striker to waltz in on goal and add to the scoreline. Looks short of confidence.

    Adrian Mariappa - 5
Some vital headers at the back and the odd foul as he covered across to help keep Bennett in check. Made the joint most interceptions (3) with his fellow centre-backs Baker and Kalas.

    Jack Hunt - 5
Maybe could have been quicker to close down Malone as the defender drilled in off the post but that was nit-picking. Got forward well but few of his arcing crosses into the box.

    Han-Noah Massengo - 6
Plenty of energy in the middle but we'd like to see him drive forward with the ball a but more often to commit opposition defenders. He's good enough, as he showed with one good run late on that drew a yellow from McNamara. Unfortunate to lose the ball as Malone smashed forward to Wallace to score within five minutes.

    Henri Lansbury - 6
A sublime pass opened up the Millwall defence for Conway to run through and score but he was lucky to not have given away a penalty on Bradshaw just after. Some good interceptions but not enough enery shown at times.

    Kasey Palmer - 5
Grew into the game and he won the ball high to creat a great chance for Conway to grab a second goal, while there were some good passes fizzed into Wells too. Some sloppy passes at times too though.

    Tommy Rowe - 4
Given a roasting by McNamara at times down his flank, with the Millwall wing-back causing problems with his pace. Taken off at the break for the returning Dasilva.

    Nahki Wells - 5
Didnt get many chances, resulting in another game where the Bermudian finished without a single effort at goal. Did work hard for the side as ever though.

    Tommy Conway - 6
Lovely run into space to meet Lansbury's through-pass before rounding Bialkowski for his forst senior City goal. And could have had another soon after as Palmer found him in the area. His slight error led to the corner from which Millwall grabbed their third.

    Substitutions

    Jay Dasilva (for Rowe, 45') - 6

First appearance since 5 December against Birmingham for the wing-back who had one nice run into the opposition area.

    Alex Scott (for Lansbury, 45') - 6

A second appearance for the 17-year-old who the club have high hopes for in the future. A tremendous run in the final seconds showed what he might offer in the future.

    Antoine Semenyo (for Conway, 64') - n/a

Little to thrive on but pushed long range effort just past the post.

    Steven Sessegnon (for Hunt, 64') - n/a

Another outing for the on-loan Fulham man who put in a good late cross that saw Baker volley over the bar.

    Adam Nagy (for Wells, 78') - n/a

Got the last minutes as the game petered out.

At least NP is giving some of the youngsters a run out....shows their ability thrown in the deep end and they will learn loads from it..

I totally agree with giving some of the younger players a chance to prove themselves during the season run down because they could be the future. Interesting 3 months ahead of us and I look forward to some positive moves from Pearson to sort out this underwhelming squad.

So, still no blame attributed to Pearson then? This is way worse than 12-18 months ago, with largely the same squad. Injuries haven’t helped, but too many are simply not trying. It’s the managers job to fix that and while I think NP will be a good appointment, he has had an awful start. Just had a mate who’s a Newcastle fan text me and say what does Pearson have over SL to get a 3 year deal based on his performance so far? A LOT needs sorting this summer, or we will go down next season.

Possibly dangerous times ahead and let's just hope some better players with even better attitudes can be found during the summer otherwise, as you say supcon, we could be headed for somewhere we don't want to be.

I’m worried that we’ve got another SoD situation. A manager we all wanted to be disappointed. But I’m hopping he gets rid of some of the dross we’ve got and proves me wrong.

NP has got one hell of a task to achieve, he has inherited the detritus of 2 previous headcoaches and a CEO who is doing one, he has also coped with working systems and personel created and stitched together by them, injuries unresolved, OOC just hanging, morale ebbing, he is only responsible for one loanee and he has been roasted, the owner of our club gave him the short term job to preserve our status and he managed to do this, not a word of blame, criticism or complaint about any individual predecessors, in fact he has been very complimentory about all when questioned.

He is obviously prepared and ready for the task ahead, he has analysed the playing staff, formed a plan and had it agreed with SL/JL when he signed his contract, we have 3/4 months to assemble additional squad players, establish new foundations or do away with the old bad habits and formulate fresh, different ways ahead to enable us to step up to the next required level.

Experience and proven success don't come cheap, we've had years of the cheap option, inexperience, waste and emotion, now we have got a determined man in charge, no bravado, no fancy quotes, just a winner, lets give him the time, space and hopefully finance that others have benefited from and then make judgements.

And I state again, this largely unchanged squad was in and around the play-offs most of the season for the 2 seasons preceding seasons, so what has gone wrong this season to be flirting with relegation. It can’t be all the players fault, although they and injuries have been high factors.

Nigel Pearson gives his verdict after Bristol City's heavy defeat to Millwall
Robins manager has his say following 4-1 loss at the Den on Saturday afternoon.

Bristol City suffered their second heaviest defeat of a difficult 2020/21 campaign on Saturday as the Robins went down 4-1 to Millwall with Nigel Pearson accusing too many players looking forward to the end of the season.

A much-changed Robins side from the loss to Luton Town were behind after just five minutes as Lee Wallace capitalised on a breakway to rifle past Max O'Leary in goal.

Teenage striker Tommy Conway netted his first Bristol City goal to equalise before Scott Malone rifled into the net to put the Lions back into the lead on 31 minutes.

City made two changes at the break - as the returning Jay Dasilva and 17-year-old Alex Scott replaced Tommy Rowe and Henri Lansbury - but it was the hosts who went on to get stronger scoring twice via some questionable defending.

"Another day where we’re not good enough. Too many individual mistakes, not enough collective resistance against a side who played pretty well," Pearson, who agreed a three-year contract this week, said in his post-match press conference.

"We had our opportunities but unfortunately, we’ve once again allowed our opponents to score far too easily. That’s a big problem for us at the moment."

The Robins boss elaborated on the desperate situation City find themselves in his radio interview with BBC Radio Bristol, as he reflected on a result that means it's just one win in the last 11 games.

City face Brentford in their final match of the season next Saturday at Ashton Gate and will be hopeful of reversing their dreadful current form, although the play-off bound Bees are undefeated in their last six games.

"Another disappointing performance with too many unforced errors, too many players who look as though they are looking forward to the end of the season," added Pearson.

"That remains a huge disappointment because the task that lies ahead is going to be a very big, I knew that anyway, I'm certainly having to calibrate how it looks and what I think we need.

"But I'm here to do that so I will do it.

"But we don't help ourselves and some of the key parts of the game we just let drift by us without there being the care and cohesive nature that we need.

"It's a tough situation to endure at the moment. The players are aware of my thoughts on it and what is vitally important is the decisions that are made this summer, in terms of how we strengthen the squad, that we get that right."
