Second favourite Pretty Gorgeous is out of the 1000 Guineas after scoping badly. It's like something out of a Dick Francis novel. That will leave his father's Santa Barbara facing one of the weakest looking Guineas fields I can recall. As someone who had backed Pretty Gorgeous at 20/1, I can only say
I decided to go against Alpinista today. She ran behind Love but was no match for her last season, although there was no disgrace in that. She is 8 lbs well in on official ratings today but the stable have had no winners for 7 weeks and have more or less been dormant of late. Michael Stoute is in better form and his filly Katara was progressive last season before ending on a flat note when upped to Group 3 class on her final start. Katara ran two stones below her rating that day and as a filly with very little miles on the clock she could be open to more improvement as a 4YO. Alpinista holds Katara by plenty based on her second place when the latter filly was tailed off 4th of the 4 but Katara is better than that and it may be worth remembering that they were tight in the betting that day with Katara 2/1 to Alpinista's 7/4. No doubt Prescott will get his season off to a flier now that I have mentioned the quiet form of the yard but I though Katara at 5/2 was a better option today given that both fillies have only won at Listed level so far. 2.45 Goodwood Katara 5/2
Goodwood 1.00pm 2 Atalanta's Boy 7/2 Has won here over the last two years in a row. Last year being a class 2 race. Jockey Thomas Greatrex won both times. Not without competition with Open wide finishing ahead of the selection previously at Kempton. Bimble recieves decent weight from OW and AB, however with the trainer Menuisier coming back into some form and with a 20% strike rate at the course I feel its worth the bet. GL
BOOM! Kept on well. Menusier looks like he may have a good day today. Selsey Sizzler is being backed over at Chepstow for the 2.20, from 3/1 into 2/1
Chepstow 3.30 Greycious Girl Stayed on inside final furlong when 3rd at Bath over 5 1/2 f last time out on good to firm going (trainer's rep said filly could benefit from a slower surface). Today at Chepstow its good to soft and over 6f. Stable has had several runners placed in the last 14 days. I like the booking of David Probert especially at Chepstow. Could get her head in front today I think.
Punchestown 18,35 Bob And Co 11/4 19,05 Get My Drift 11/1 e/w (four places) Cheltenham 18,45 Fifty Shades 10/1 e/w
Well worked out! The favourite was choke out in the early stages and ran nothing like his previous couple of runs.
4.15 Punchestown. I cannot understand the betting for this race. Dostal Phil should be favourite. Rebel Gold is 13 lb better off with Asterion Forlonge for an 8 lengths beating with School Boy Hours 8 lengths behind ( 4 lb better off with Rebel Gold. So why are those two horses 3/1 and 11/2 with Rebel Gold 33/1 ? Also, Notice To Close is overpriced at 33/1 , having a good third earlier in April after winning his last two chases in the autumn. Both have each way possibilities.
Well done Wooley. What might have have happened? Dostal Phil was cruising into contention when the lad fell off. Winner won very nicely, take nothing away. Class animal to win like that off that weight!
Thanks Stick, indeed was looking dangerous. Be interesting to see what they do with the winner now. Although don’t know who this Wooley character is
Hunter chasers are an enigma to most punters and wisely avoided by most. I do love this meeting and have attended on several occasions. This years meeting is a lot weaker than most seasons with Highway Jewel probably being the one class hunter on show today. I would absolutely love to see SAM CAVALLARO win the opener. He has run no less than five times in the race with a record that reads 11231. The downside is that he is now almost old enough to drink!
Will biddick I’m sure will be hoping for a cross the card double training one and riding one too. I do fancy Caid Du Berlais over in Ireland. Looks to have been laid out for this (do hate that saying but comes here the freshest horse of the market principles) seems a stronger field today then his win 2 years ago but was impressive that day and will be raring to go I reckon.
Katara was very disappointing. She seemed to struggle to go the pace and when it quickened she was left wanting. She then weakened and perhaps wasn't match fit but she looked poor today. In the end Alpinista scrambled home on the nod after looking beaten, at an ironically big price of 13/8 having been 4/6 when I picked against her. Warrior Brave made up for her though. The "good thing" Nelson Gay was a bit free and he was soon in trouble. I thought the outsider was going to come and do my fellow but he kept on gamely for a profitable day. He was backed from 5/1, while they couldn't give Peerless away out to 6/1 from 9/4 earlier. The betting seemed to tell the tale as he finished last of the four. Nelson Gay's representative explained that the horse was unsuited by running without cover in the early stages but you would worry for him knowing that he will be 7 lbs worse off than today's mark with his OR 95 now. I half toyed with giving Legal Attack another go today after he disappointed last time in the Free Handicap but decided to leave it. The fact that ATR's Timeform preview rated him 4th of the 4 didn't help confidence but in the end he was the one who gave the odds-on favourite a fright and only went down by a short head. Royal Scimitar was again disappointing, the top rated in the field on 102 but beaten nearly six and a half lengths. The second third and 4th today had all run behind Tactical last time and I would slightly question Tactical's new Handicap mark of 112, given that today's winner Qaader is a stone lower on 98.
