Swanny, that game had all the hall marks of 2x nervous teams knowing what's at stake but not quiet knowing if they could manage to do it. The Welsh played so well in the 1st half, took control early in the 2nd only to then froze a little thinking that this lead is now defendable. Once the French lost their forward for the eye gouging, and it was, they reverted to type and started to go for it as they had already lost and so it dosn't matter if we concede again...

It gave the viewer a great game to watch, to which I would like to say the ref played a big part in it, though the Welsh must feel a bit aggrieved with his non awarding of the potential Penalty try near the end. All in all it was a great game to watch with all the drama you get when you get a bit of uncertainty in the match...

They may well win the 6 Nations but to miss out on a Grand Slam is going to be hard to take if they do...

    RIP - Frank Worthington...<rose>

A player who had come to the end of his playing days by the time I got deep in to watching football but with him once linked to a move to my Liverpool was a player I always seemed to look out for. He was a maverick, no doubt about that, a player off the filed as much on it, and I've heard a few tales about the him and his shenanigans shall we say... Anyway, here's the one goal that if I ever hear the name Frank Worthington pops in to my head. Class...

I went to a Sportsmans do once, many moons ago, where Tommy Smith was the quest talker and someone asked him who was one of the hardest, quickest players etc to which he told this tale. From what i can remember, here goes...

Liverpool where at home when a young Frank Worthington, on the wing for the visitors (I cant remember the team sorry) never touched the ball in the first 15mins of the game. Eventually Frank picked the ball up just in their half and took off skipping past one, then two, and now Tommy had him firmly in his sights. Not one to sherk a challenge Tommy went to challenge him (that coming from Tommy Smith meant knee high minimum...) as Frank slipped past him, only to come back and take him on again. Tommy missed him once again, Frank put the cross in and boom they went 1-0 up.... To be fair he just turned around to go back to the half way, (as they did back in the day) so Tommy took the opportunity to remind him where he was playing, who he was playing against and don't fo it again as he'll put him in to row z...!! Typical Tommy tackle really.

Frank did touch the ball again and whoosh, Tommy took him out and put him into the stands. Tommy went on to say that although he kicked him bad, he came back again and again and always said he was one of the best players for his position at the time...

Note for Stick: I see at last Lyndon Dykes is starting to really play well and starting to put the ball in the net too (he can certainly do it for Scotland, if and when they play him). I cannot figure-out what on earth is the matter with Sheffield Wednesday, surely one of the great clubs of English football. Looks very much like they'll go down, although I hope they don't. If it happens, then I think the club will finally get to grips, so to speak, and quickly zoom back up to the Championship league.

Finally, what a damn shame the R's had that godawful run of 6 or 7 losses straight earlier on in the season. That dreadful run really hurt them, for sure. Hope they can hang-on to Seny Dieng, I have my doubts if they can; he's Premier League class IMHO? You could have knocked me over with a feather when I found out he was from Senegal; the name suggests to me he was from Vietnam! <doh> <laugh>

Pleased for the lad Swanny. He was starting to get quite a bit of stick from Rangers fans on social media but to be honest we were not playing a brand of football that suited his strengths. We are getting more crosses in now and he is a menace to defenders in the box.
Its the lad Johanssen (on loan from Fulham) who has made the biggest difference, absolute class at this level. Sadly if as seems likely the Ruperts go down then they will want him back for a promotion push while they shed some skin.
Without wishing to upset some of the terrific lads on here I have very little sympathy for Wednesday and my feelings for them date back some years when we had a promotion party at their ground which many of their thugs took exception to. It was one of the ugliest days I have ever witnessed at football and diluted what should have been a memorable day for us.
The run really hurt us but in that division a bad run is pretty much inevitable. Cardiff nearly slipped into the dogfight during theirs and acted by getting rid of the manager, mow they are pushing for the play-offs.
Sadly for Rangers the economic climate and constant harassment over our financial affairs means that we remain a club that cannot turn decent offers down. This season we lost BOS and Eze as well as not being able to retain Hugill and Wells. I fear the next window may be more of the same and next season we may start minus Chair, Dieng, Austin and Johanssen. Its tough on clubs like us who are trying desperately to compete with Premier league squads on Premier league wages which are being subsidised by an almost nonsensical parachute payment scheme that seems desingned to make the top division a league free of the unwanted teams.

Thanks, Stick, that explains a heck of a lot for me. I had no idea about that promotion party affair, I would feel the same way if I had witnessed it. Association Football certainly has its fair share of total morons amongst its fans, for sure. They might be able to keep Chair, and Dykes is on a 4-year deal too, which I think both are happy with? It's Seny Dieng that will be the one hardest to hold on to IMHO. Yes, totally agree on Johanssen, in fact all of the 'loan' players have done a heck of a job for the club. The club will lose all of them I guess, as their clubs will rightly want them back. Things are looking a lot brighter though, after a very worrying start to the season. <ok>

So they now want to form a European Super Football League, based on exclusivity and greed.
It's always been a source of great pride that my home club, Burnley, was one of the 12 founder members of the English Football League. None of these so called top 6 English clubs were party to that great moment when it all began 133 years ago. These clubs now want to destroy the great tradition of a game founded in the hearts of northern and midlands working classes.
I've thought for a long time that the game has become an outlet for petty cheats, gamesmanship, and exhibitionism- so devoid of the sportsmanship which characterised its birth.
It's the end of the football road for me. Heartbreaking!

Football started being ruined when Sky took over the show and the Premier League was born.

I did quite like the Premier League when it first came out but it has become too money dominated with these big backers in it for the money and players agents running riot.

I do find it odd (although I really should be used to it now), when pundits analyse key bits of the game, especially players going down that it is just accepted now that they are entitled to do this even with the faintest of touches. It's like they have not realised that this is cheating and trying to unfairly get an advantage is just OK. Sad really..

I also don't like the fact that teams play too many foreign players in their sides. They should be forced to play 4 home grown players for the good of the national sides.

It's a shame that the game is being ruined..we are a million light years away from the Brian Clough days.. some may say that's a good thing but not for me. Its changing for the worse, its all about money and being shaped by big power brokers that are only in it for one reason.

As a long time supporter of Liverpool I have spent many a weekend watching my team up and down the country, had some memorable times and poor ones too but I have always felt that the opposition supporters and my own all had the one thing in common, we loved the game of football. This 'working mans' game has changed in the last 25 years or so with the introduction of all seated stadiums and the target audience being anything but the dockers who would go on to Anfield straight from work that Saturday morning before getting on the lash at 4:45...!!

It's a corporate sport now, and not only in football but many other sports as well, but this European Super League is a step too far in my opinion. In a season where the football has been devoid of any action from the stands these clubs have made a decision without the single idea of what the fan has to go through to watch & support these teams. Its a non-starter...!!

The idea of just playing 'just' European football is boring, and I say that from a fan who has seen Liverpool away in Europe. It's a bloody thrill and headache at times to plan a few days away in Europe, where most of the times the football is the side issue of the trip as seeing this wonderful world of ours is so much better. The chase for getting in to the European spots is also something that we should always have, Liverpool are now a 6x times Champion of the European cup/Champions League winner in their time but we havn't qualified for each and every year since the start, AND THAT'S THE POINT...!!

It's a reward to doing well for the previous years work, can you now go on to be Kings of Europe, play teams that you would never otherwise meet, well no longer for my club. What a mess the big wigs of these clubs have got themselves in to here, and all at a cost to the game of football and all who at the moment watch it.

I am at a loss for what they are planning to do but it shouldn't really surprise me in the end. GREED IS GREED...!!

It won’t happen but it’s certainly a right mess at the moment.
The problem I have with it all is that the UEFA proposals announced today are just as bad!
They are expanding competitions (like FIFA) out of pure greed too.

these Americans just have no concept of promotion/relegation.
If they want a franchise league then just create one in the US!

what real football supporters want more than anything is to have more 3pm Saturday games - it is crazy that the game has moved away from that time so much in recent years.

This was when he was playing for Bolton. He is still fondly remembered by the fans of a certain age. He made his name with his second league club, Leicester City, who we bought him from. By the end of his career he'd had more clubs than Nick Faldo, very rarely spending more than one season at all of them. Certainly his skirt chasing antics didn't endear him to many club chairmen so may go to explain his frequent moves!

I haven't looked in on this thread for years, I have some questions to ask when I have more time!

I understand ManCity and Chelsea are the first to crack, and have pulled-out of the European Super League project. "The power of the people"?

23:30 BST - Edit: About five minutes ago it was announced that all six Premier League clubs have withdrawn from the proposed European Super League. Well, that didn't last long!

So the Big 6 shat themselves and have pulled out of the newly proposed Super Duper Fantasy European Football league that was going to be bringing the best football and 'product' that all of the supporters in the watching world would ever see...!! Ahem, cough, cough, what a load of bollox that was then...!!

To be honest I never thought it would go through but the speed with how all of em got out speaks volumes to how much of a bad idea it was from the start. I do feel for the managers and players who obviously knew absolutely nothing about it and were thrown to the lions off the back of it. The management and owners have a lot to answer for, if they do actually care that is, and some of the press release details given out are not exactly saying sorry now are they...

What will happen with the fans relationship towards their owners is going to be interesting and that of the media towards these teams, but what is very apparent is that the system needs a bloody good shake up...

It's going to be very intriguing as to what happens next...?!?!?

The British & Irish Lions take on the current World Rugby Champions South Africa later on today in the 1st Test in Cape Town in what will be a real smash up against there very strong forward line and our mix of youth and experience. The 1st Test is always the big one, don't want to go 1-nil down with only the 2 to play and taking the opener so all eyes will be focused on getting that all important body blow in first.

The Union game has always been about controlling the ball and thats where the forward play the biggest part of it. The scrums give you a strength test, and the South Africans are super strong in this department, they basically won the World Cup off the back of them just out pounding the opposition in to the ground. Can we match them, well we are going to have to, but i do think we can. The SA's need to be moved around the park, high tempo, just to get some mileage in to those legs which i think we can do. I am a massive Alun Wyn Jones fan, huge legend of a man, and i just hope that he manages to get through the game as he's a little short of full fitness but he won't let us down, he's too good for that. If you read about the possible lines ups then the front row of Lawes, Curry & Conan looks tight, as dos the pairing of Itoje and AWJones plus the loose forwards have a lot of energy about them as well whichever combination gets selected. But it will more than likely come down to the fitness and who has the better strength coming off the bench that i think will settle it today, it always is with the multiple subs allowed now a days.

Can't see it being a high scoring game, maybe a 20-17 type of game with the Lions edging them out, fingers crossed...:emoticon-0165-muscl

The only thing that will dampen the game will be the fact that there will be no huge swathes of crimson red shirts in the stands, something the Lions fans do in vast numbers. I did look in trying to go this tour but the cost and timing was all out for me so will wait for my chance on another Tour in the future...

And just a note on this thread, started by Cyclonic many moons ago, i found his thread some 10 pages back in the history files, something Cyc would never have let go, especially with the Olympics and his real love for the track athletes about to start...

Hope our Southern Hemisphere reporter is still about somewhere in the outback, as it's been a while since his last post...
