... I think we deserve an exciting season watching a decent team competing and winning games playing a bit of football rather than putting a cherry on a dogshit. I think a season in league 1 for the new squad to get a habit of winning will benefit the players but more importantly the fans need/deserve to feel like winners for a while. let’s get this season over then put the wheels back on the tractor.
... I disagree, I want promotion, and dont care how we get there atm. 2 seasons playing against the likes of Rochdale, Shrewsbury, Accrington et al, is too much. I understand about the winning mentality, but I'd rather finish 21st in the championship next season than playing against the likes mentioned above.
I just think we deserve a decent promotion season with something to cheer about, I feel that if we went up this season it would feel like a waste because its not been enjoyable....if you know what I mean.
Interesting discussion, and it seems we had an improvement today, tho I didnt listen, watch live or iFollow, or tune in at all. On balance, if PC does instill a new spirit and we do scrape up - a very tough job now as only Pompey are within each - then I would still like us to go up as it will give a fresh start, new incentive, new players, and staff who want to join a Championship side and club, and not a L1 one. But in truth I cant see it happening.
Appreciate the sentiment but it's similar to the hope we get relegated argument. There's never any guarantees that next season will be any better. Unlikely to happen but I'd rather rebuild as a championship club than a L1 club.
Bit of a moot point really,we’re going nowhere this season. (Like the “cherry on a dogshit” analogy though!)
Yeah sadly that’s our lot innit? I’d prefer we went up by creeping over the line as the squad overhaul will still happen only we’ll be one division closer to the PL. u gotta remember; even under GB, for all the fun and games, we only ever made the play offs and even then we buggered that up a few times until the football gods finally smiled on us. U take any promotion u can when u can in my book! we need up and out of this division as it’s a fierce, tough place and not somewhere to try abs spray passes about. Which is why I think PC’s direct style and man management is the right combo right now.
After last nights results if we win all last 3 games and Pompey, Oxford, Charlton lose or draw at least one of theirs, then top 6 we go, fat chance! Great odds! Just think, if we had one win last few games, how different it might be. Give us a goal, a win please. Forgotten how that feels.
On the assumption we are not having a goal difference swing of at least 14 then we have to win all three and then: Charlton: WLL or DDD or worse. Oxford: DD or worse. Portsmouth: DL or worse. If Oxford or Pompey win another match it’s over. Ain’t happening, but then we knew that!
Crazy though, I'm not saying I would've preferred this, but I get the feeling if we hadn't sacked Lambert we would've got in the playoffs. Cook has shot himself in the foot
Thats what makes it the more heartbreaking....not scored in 7 of our last 8 games. and with 3 games to play, we have a mathematical chance of getting promoted. Obviously Cook's attempts at trying to galvanise the team to win a game has totally backfired on the club, even though most of us were saying that the players needed a rocket up their backsides.
What do people think of the season tickets? The club are forking out over a million in compensation. They are refunding all but £10 (ifollow) per match and giving U12s and U19s a free renewal. It doesn’t take care of families that may have shared a code and they might have to climb down on that, but on the other hand people must have renewed their season tickets knowing there was slim chance of being allowed into matches. I think the balance is about right..
Debatable as always! Both decent blokes and who knows if PL had ridden the storm and kept his mouth shut. We are where we are, lets hope fortune favours the brave next few months!
As a long standing Season ticket holder I agree with you, they seem to have got it about right, not that you’d know it from the bitching on TWTD!
And that’s the difference between being on the sidelines and being the main man in there having to look these guys in the face each morning and work with them. There’s rockets and rockets...PC alienated the whole lot like it was one of us sounding off from the comfort of our armchairs. It’s not great when actually you’re the main man. As I said, provided he’s got some genius way of turning this all around next season with a clean slate it’ll all be forgotten but if he blows loadsa money and upsets everyone when it doesn’t go his way we’re in for a totally unnecessary hard slog with him around. I don’t see the same guy that galvanised Wigan. Not yet anyway...
Whatever division we play in one golden rule applies and that is you must score more goals than the opposition, Jackson our star striker bought from Accrington Stanley cannot cope in this lofty league, he's scored one goal all season, ONE !! For Christ's sake, Norwood promises much with hard work off the ball but spends most of his time receiving treatment so never gets to full fitness, and as for the rest they are bloody useless at scoring, we could always rely on Tommy Smith to score five goals give or take a season, Chambers would get a few, mid field would contribute but now there's nothing from anywhere, God help us if we had fluiked a play off place.
I think Paul Cook’s comments today were telling, that he’s hearing a lot of excuses and nobody is stepping up. The mentality is rotten and has been since the last couple of years of McCarthy’s time. There is nothing for it but a complete clear out. Only Paul Cook can tell you the characters he wants in the squad but it wouldn’t surprise me if just Woolfy, Downes and KVY are the only survivors from the first team.
The time for excuses is long past, everything was going to be ok When our injured players came back, no it isn't, all will be well when we get rid of Lambert, no it isn't, we'll be fine when Cook gets his ideas across, no it isn't. When managers start saying players have the wrong mentality it usually means they don't want to be at the Club, they are not going to play for that particular coach, or they just don't give a toss any more, but whatever it is they can't continue to steal a living at the supporters expense, they have to be got rid before we can go forwards.
It’s for those reasons that I am behind Paul Cook in calling out the players and to hell with the consequences. I know it’s not always going to be a bed of roses to be a professional footballer - forget about playing for the badge - even at this level they are earning many multiples the average salary, it is a dream opportunity for their careers that they seem hell bent on throwing away.
