MansionBet Match Preview: Sheffield Wednesday (A)
    Friday, April 16th 2021

The final five games of the campaign starts with a trip to Hillsborough this Saturday.

The Robins head to Sheffield off the back of last weekend’s goalless draw with Nottingham Forest, which stopped the winless rot at home.

There was a first start for young Sam Pearson, while another eye-catching Han-Noah Massengo performance - he was voted fans' Man of the Match - were certainly two positives from the afternoon at Ashton Gate.

Highlights: Bristol City v Nottingham Forest

That was a match between two teams set to end the season with mid-table security, but it’s a different occasion with City’s trip to South Yorkshire where they face a team battling to avoid relegation.

Sheffield Wednesday are not in the best form themselves having won once on home soil in their last five games. They also have two wins from their last 13 games, which included a stretch of seven consecutive defeats.

There had been a recent indication of promise after a shock 5-0 demolition of Cardiff City, and a 2-1 win over play-off contenders Barnsley though a heavy loss to QPR and a 2-0 defeat to Swansea last time out mean they have struggled to build on their better results.

It doesn’t help their bid to avoid relegation this season, after starting the campaign with a 12-points deduction – later reduced to six - following a breach of financial regulations as they find themselves in 23rd place, just two points ahead of Wycombe Wanderers, prior to Saturday’s kick-off.

Darren Moore’s side are four points behind Rotherham United though they have games in hand, while Coventry above them are seven points clear of the Owls heading into the weekend.

It could take a mighty effort to stay in the league but in stalwart Barry Bannan, Wednesday have an experienced player who can take an occasion by the hand. He leads the way with six assists, while Callum Paterson and Josh Windass have eight goals each in all competitions, albeit Paterson has only one goal from his last 14 appearances. Jordan Rhodes is behind them with seven, but he is one player whose future remains in doubt going forward, with his contract set to expire in the summer, along with Adam Reach who is linked elsewhere.

Is it too much of an ask for the Owls? Their battle to avoid the drop to League One is very much on as they fight to extend their nine-season stay in the Championship.

Supporters are reminded that as a mark of respect, the upcoming fixture has been moved to avoid a clash with the funeral of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The Owls v City will kick-off at 12.30pm but streamed live on Robins TV as usual, with the Matchday Show starting at 12pm.

    DOWN MEMORY LANE
    Bristol City 2-0 Sheffield Wednesday
    Ashton Gate
    Sunday, September 22nd 2020
    Sky Bet Championship

It was a third successive win at the start of the Sky Bet Championship season when the teams met back in September, where City cranked up their attacking intent to beat the Owls 2-0 and go joint top of the table.

The Owls were impressive in the first half but couldn’t find a breakthrough, while City responded with second-half goals from Tommy Rowe and Jamie Paterson to round off their super September start in style.

Rowe was well-placed to finish off another flowing team move, while City matched their physical opponents before sealing off the weekend with Paterson’s injury-time drive.

City went unbeaten in their first three league games of a season for the first time since August 2001 and occupied second spot, level on points with Reading.

I always live in hope, but given that Wednesday are fighting for their championship lives. I fully expect them to beat up our weak midfield, I expect us to lack width because our ageing full backs are not athletic enough, I don't expect our midfield to create many if any chances as usual, so the best that I am expecting is another 0-0. But as I always say we are Bristol City and we do not always get what we expect.

I got an alert when we went a goal down. shrugged my shoulders and carried on with my gardening.
I’m sorry to say that it’s the apathetic way I feel right now.
    Meh.

When I saw that the squad today contained 6 players that I hope will be leaving at the end of the season, my heart sank yet again.

And the 4 that started haven't let me down, Hunt was hopelessly out of position for the cross for the corner that led to their first goal and then Rowe obliged by losing his man for the goal. Hunt then was far too easily skinned for the cross that led to the penalty. Lansbury carried on with putting long passes straight into touch and then received a red card, the commentary team seem to be suggesting the ball hit the bar, it looked like handball to me. Diedhiou's first 2 touches saw him on his arse, the commentator said about a Bakinson through ball "Fam didn't anticipate that pass" and nearly pissed myself, when has Diedhiou ever anticipated a through pass FFS.

Yep same old suspects, Hunt, Diedhiou, Rowe and Lansbury and would probably add Nagy to that list.

Good point in the end with 10 men and probably deserved with a battling 2nd half performance, great strike from Bakinson.

Deserved point and the red will be rescinded-he did not tough the ball.No foul and no penalty.
The save was justified by my Player of the season Dan Bentley.

The jury is still out for me, I haven't yet seen conclusive proof it hit the bar, to me it looks as though he flicks the ball with his hand from what I can see, it was a strange hand position and that gave the referee a decision to make.

The fact still remains that we have a squad mostly not worthy of getting a pay cheque. I am starting to fear where we go from here and the fat lady hasn't even cleared her throat yet.
