And he was the instigator of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, a magnificent programme for younger people and now fairly world wide.

My daughter did the Gold, we went up to St. James Palace for her to receive it. Hundreds of winners there, split into several room, each with a celebrity sports person. The Duke visited every room and oversaw the presentations but only presented a few in each room himself. This was about 17 years ago so he was in his eighties then.

Rusty Young — co-founder, singer, and multi-instrumentalist with the pioneering country-rock band Poco — died April 14th of a heart attack.

Rusty Young basically introduced the pedal / lap steel guitar into the echelons of rock and roll.
Poco formed from the splinters of Buffalo Springfield and influenced numerous 'country rock'
bands like the Eagles, etc. RIP <ok>

Jim Steinman, the colourful composer behind hits like Bat Out Of Hell and Total Eclipse Of The Heart, has died at the age of 73.
His brother Bill told the Associated Press that the songwriter and producer had died of kidney failure on Monday after being ill for some time.
"I miss him a great deal already," he added.
Singer Meat Loaf, with whom Steinman scored his biggest hits, said goodbye with the words: "Fly Jimmy Fly".

Wrote some great songs. RIP Jim<rose><rose>

Michael Collins - one of the three crew members of the first manned mission to the Moon, Apollo 11 in 1969 - has died aged 90, his family say.
He died on Wednesday after "a valiant battle with cancer. He spent his final days peacefully, with his family by his side," they said.
Collins had stayed in lunar orbit as his colleagues Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon.
Aldrin, 91, is now the only surviving member of the mission.

A proper hero. RIP Michael <rose><rose>

Boxer Brian London, who challenged Muhammad Ali for the world heavyweight title in 1966, has died aged 87.

London, who took his nickname of "The Blackpool Rock" from his hometown, fought Ali days after England had won the football World Cup.

Despite being buoyed by a spirit of national optimism, the Hartlepool-born boxer was defeated in the third round.

The former Ipswich striker Paul Mariner, who in 1981 scored the goal that took England to their first World Cup finals since they lost as holders in 1970, has died at the age of 68. Mariner had had brain cancer.

Mariner scored 139 goals in 339 games for Ipswich in a golden era in which they won the FA Cup in 1978 and Uefa Cup in 1981. His other clubs included Plymouth, Arsenal and Portsmouth, while he also earned 35 England caps and scored 13 times for his country.

In November 1981, Mariner scored the goal that secured England’s place at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Ron Greenwood’s team had been set to miss out after a shock defeat by Norway, but after Romania stumbled they had a fresh chance and, needing only a draw against Hungary, Mariner scored after 16 minutes to carry his country safely through. Mariner also scored in the opening game at the finals, a 3-1 victory against France.

    A class player.
    RIP Paul <rose><rose>

Former BDO world darts champion Andy Fordham has died at the age of 59.

Fordham, nicknamed 'The Viking', won the tournament at the Lakeside 17 years ago, after four previous semi-final defeats.

The one-time Kent publican admitted to drinking heavily during matches and collapsed at the 2007 event.

But despite battling a number of health issues he played in the 2015 Grand Slam of Darts after coming through qualifying.

A statement on the BDO website said: "The British Darts Organisation is deeply saddened to hear of the loss of the darts legend Andy (The Viking) Fordham, a true gentleman of the game who will be deeply missed by all.

    RIP Big Man. <rose><rose>

Former England, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire seam bowler Mike Hendrick has died at the age of 72.

Hendrick, who took 87 wickets in 30 Tests between 1974 and 1981, had been been suffering from bowel and liver cancer in recent years.

He was part of three Ashes-winning series and appeared in 22 one-day internationals, including the 1979 World Cup final against West Indies.

Hendrick also appeared as an expert summariser on BBC Test Match Special.

Regarded as one of the finest new-ball bowlers of an era in which there was plenty of competition, he took 770 wickets throughout his first-class career.

    Underrated in my opinion.
    Great bowler. RIP Mike <rose><rose>

Bayern Munich and Germany legend Gerd Muller has died at the age of 75.

The striker scored 68 goals in 62 appearances for West Germany, including the winning goal in the 1974 World Cup final against the Netherlands.

Muller also spent 15 years at Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, scoring a record 365 goals in 427 league appearances.

"Today is a sad, black day for FC Bayern and all of its fans," Bayern president Herbert Hainer said.

"Gerd Muller was the greatest striker there has ever been - and a fine person, a personality in world football. We are united in deep sorrow with his wife Uschi and his family.

"Without Gerd Muller, FC Bayern would not be the club we all love today. His name and the memory of him will live on forever."

Muller won the Golden Boot for netting 10 goals at the 1970 World Cup and also won the Ballon d'Or that year.

He then helped West Germany win the European Championship two years later.

Muller held the record for the most goals in a calendar year after scoring 85 in 1972 until Lionel Messi surpassed his total in 2012.

His record of 40 goals in a Bundesliga season stood for 49 years before it was broken by Robert Lewandowski in May.

In total he scored 566 goals in 607 games for Bayern and helped them win four Bundesliga and DFB Cup titles, three European Cups, a European Cup Winners' Cup and an Intercontinental Cup.

    Great player. RIP De Bomber<rose>

Don Everly, the last surviving member of the rock 'n' roll duo The Everly Brothers, has died at the age of 84.

A family spokesperson confirmed Everly's death to the Los Angeles Times, but did not disclose the cause.

Everly and his brother, Phil, had hits worldwide in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including Bye Bye Love and All I Have To Do Is Dream.

They were known for their close harmonies and influenced bands such as The Beatles.

The pair had an onstage breakup in 1973 that led to a decade-long estrangement, but Phil later told Time magazine that the brothers' relationship had survived this.

    Loved the Everly Brothers.
Another legend from my younger days.
    RIP Don <rose><rose>

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, who helped them become one of the greatest bands in rock 'n' roll, has died at the age of 80.

"It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts," a statement said.

It said he was "a cherished husband, father and grandfather" and "one of the greatest drummers of his generation".

Not your typical 60's rock star.
Another 60's icon from my youth.
