Of course he manages to finish 6th Seemed like he was still very green, even though that was his 4th race. Fairly confusing...
Well, Gill, we gave it a good go! I make it a habit of not criticising jockeys, but, in this case, I do wish the rider could have laid-up a bit closer to the pace. He had him just about stone last on the rail for much of the race. The horse did well to run-on and finish 6th. Never mind, onwards to tomorrow!
Workmanlike from Master Of The Seas but the first two were well clear and La Barrosa many be decent himself. Devilwala didn't seem to last and I would think the Jersey may be a target for him. The O'Brien pair were non-factors yet again this week and if Aidan was sending them for scouting purposes, he got an answer that told him his A Team need to be a fair bit better than the second XI. Akmaam was very poor and never looked like rewarding the support he had garnered. I was puzzled to see Hugh Taylor putting Imperial Sands up today and he went backwards when push came to shove. I don't think this was a great renewal and the 1-2 are the only two you could be thinking of for good targets this year. Aidan's pair may be stepped up in trip and/or dropped in grade but they looked some way short of Guineas class. I believe Master Of The Seas may come on again from this but it looked potential each-way for the Guineas, rather than winning it. Still, most of those heading the betting are going to go straight to the race in all likelihood and it takes a leap of faith when that happens. The vibe has been that One Ruler is the top Godolphin prospect for the 2000 Guineas and if he is clearly doing better in his work than today's winner he is surely a player. I backed him in the Futurity last season and I felt the bad ground did for him that day. There must be a good chance he will go off favourite for the 2000 Guineas with the stable doing well at the moment.
Having watched a replay of the Craven I thought The Rosstafarian might be one to take out of the race. He fell out of the stalls and lost a couple of lengths right away, then his jockey snatched him up twice pretty violently at half-way as the eventual winner pulled off the rail into his path. Despite showing greenness when switched wide at the 2 pole he stayed on in eye-catching fashion to finish beaten about 6 lengths. He has a Guineas entry and is currently quoted at 66/1 having been 100/1 prior to the Craven. He may well end up a 10F horse but I thought he finished his race off well today after pretty much everything went wrong for him.
What about that Averly Jane in Keeneland...swooosh! Looked a sprinter of very high class. Wonder if Royal Ascot is on the agenda.
Presenting Percy sadly lost his life following a blood infection, still had a few years racing in him too, a real shame. Won some nice pots and contested many great races, he will be a big loss to all involved.
