They are losing money hand over first too though, used to make a fortune off matchday revenue namely corporates. If things aren’t back to normal in August in terms of fans back as pre-March I honestly think the whole football pyramid will change fundamentally. People suggest our players are downing tools after talk of the 60 million, they should be grateful for a full time wage in 6 months time off any club. Could well be players out of contract never play professional football again due to the economic realities.

Most clubs would have if it wasn’t for the loans and grants they had to fall back on. This season has been built on crumbling blocks which will collapse over the summer.

Some resetting might be good for the game to be fair. They will have been hit by drops in match day revenues but I thought that was a drop in the ocean compared to TV and sponsorship deals. I can't see fundamental changes to the league but you might get a bigger gap between L1 and the Championship or maybe a mini league at the top of League 1. You might also get some of the smaller clubs plummeting and maybe some of the richer Step 3 and 4 (and even 5, in some cases) knocking on the door of league. They haven't had to pay players while the leagues have been suspended so will remain financially unaffected and, in some cases, better off.

You are right Roger, but I'm not sure it how much it helped us as it was pretty minimal.

For the current season our running costs are upwards of £14m per annum.

In the deal each League 1 club got a payment of £375,000 and then a proportionate share of £15m between 48 clubs for loss of gate receipts. There was also another £20m ‘Monitored Grant’ for any of the 48 clubs who applied for it, but that placed restrictions on players wages and transfers if accepted (I don't think/hope we didn't apply for it).

thanks for that monty from what you have posted i cannot see how the really small teams can come back from that, wondering how many fans from the clubs involved are financially strapped for cash.

Maybe so but if clubs effectively go semi-pro, which I’m guessing is what you are implying, the product of football also declines in value, along with it TV rights, sponsorship etc. so the game as we know it is then changed forever, FA cup shocks would be borderline impossible, many clubs would be sucked of any kind of ambition, clubs like Bournemouth and Swansea would never have been able to progress up the system ....

I wasn't really suggesting a shift to semi-pro, more that we might see some clubs lower down the pyramid, having greater opportunities (thinking specifically of clubs like Hashtag, who have potential to push much higher up the pyramid and turn fully pro) than they might have done under normal circumstances.
I take your point about the devaluation of the game though. That is a very real danger if the product becomes poorer. I've just been reading Mark Palios' comments about the lack of crowds.

it was definitely hard to bare so much so for me i skipped the last 10mins couldn't stand the team i love not making a show of it , while i agree with posters who were really hurt about the score i have had years of disappointment so it doesn't hurt as much as it used to, for me to really slag off the team would feel like messing behind the wife's back

It’s interesting that this thread talks about the possible demise of Football and yet the media are pushing women’s, with their super league getting reported instead of the EFL. Is that where the sponsorships are going, seems strange to me, but then I’m a knackered 64-year old

There is a huge amount of momentum in the womens game and long may that continue. The uptake at junior levels and growth is huge. Clubs are really trying to put the ladies teams on a level playing field and I am proud our new owners want to do that for us.

I doubt that is a factor in EFL demise though, if indeed there is a demise which I doubt. A reset by individual clubs maybe, which isnt a bad thing, but I dont see the wholesale overhaul happening next season.

Where were the SHARKS last night certainly not at Wigan , instead we were the JELLYFISH we wobbled and floated but with no sting . We went ahead but we never built on it but as I said on an earlier post I don’t like bringing players straight back in to the side after weeks out injured without any game time under their belts . We despite having quite a few injuries maintained a settled core of players until recently where we have chopped and changed and took to changing three or four players at a time which totally breaks momentum and flow . Saturday is a massive test for the players as well as the Manager , we have to get a result , to lose again would be disastrous and we would only have the play offs to look forward to unfortunately - though that is not a given .

I think we ended up disjointed after the team gelled even though it was cobbled together due to injuries but spirit got us through , they had defined roles but we seem to have let that drift . I said this on a post last night you can’t chop and change things all of the time without hitting bumps in the road - like setting up to defend at set pieces which we haven’t and it’s cost us four goals in two games .
