There dosen't have to be any border in the sea, and the quicker Boris Johnson and the EU recognise that, the better for everybody. You don't have to belong to a customs union for people to use common sense. I'm a brexiter btw, and I also believe Ireland should become united, but it is what it is and I have to accept that, so time to remove the barriers and cool the boiling pot and stop using the borders of custom unions as an excuse not to. Too much point scoring going on all the time, whereas it's only complicated if people choose it to be.
There is of course another solution - one which people seem reluctant to talk about. That is a single united island of lreland. KTF
As you pointed out, Top Club, a similar way to how Switzerland integrates with the EU would be the best solution to the post-Brexit problems in Northern Ireland. I'm sure the EU don't want to be held responsible for trouble kicking off in Ireland again, any more than the UK do. It's a ridiculous situation where part of the United Kingdom has to abide by different rules to the rest, and they must have known during negotiations that this could end up being a powder keg.
Topclub - I can only repeat what I said earlier, problems in Northern Ireland only exist if people choose them to. We don't have to belong to a particular union, club or anything else to remove barriers that might cause unrest. I look at both Boris Johnson on behalf of the British Government and the EU bloc to resolve this matter with nothing more difficult than some good old commonsense. Now there is a suspicious part of my mind that see's it like this....Ireland with new generations were starting to see more of a United Ireland (which i want). However, I don't believe Ireland should be used as tool to hold the rest of the UK to ransom over leaving the EU - which I feel is personally being done sometimes, such as when the EU fooked up, and for a few hours of thought were closing borders... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...under-reopens-brexit-battle-over-irish-border Employment rights which you mentioned have nothing to do with the current crisis in Ireland, they want a fight because that's all some ever want to do, like the senseless petrol bombing of bus with the bus driver still onboard, the assailants certainly forgot about his employment rights, let alone the right of life! Some people in Ireland have an agenda, other people want to point score over Brexit, it really is simpler than all that, and I say this as a Brexiter remove the borders in the sea and use commonsense, whatever that entails, without having to belong to any special club.
I just don't see the EU backing down on no border without something like the Swiss agreement in place I also think that a united Ireland would be the best option but can't see it happening. I know employment rules has nothing to do with the Irish border problem, just one of my views on brexit. I don't want to get into a brexit argument, especially as my wife(russkie) and my brother are brexiters and my mother and children are remainers! There is an article on the issue in today's guardian by Jonathan Freedland, which makes sense to me. not sure if the link works but worth a read. https://www.theguardian.com/comment...xit-belfast-violence-eu-good-friday-agreement
I passed through there once back in the mid 90's and that was enough for me. No intention of ever going again, place is crackers.
Mad thing is, there are some amazing and special people there. Sad thing is when these types of things happen the media show the idiots. We need to remember the other 90% who are indeed an awesome bunch and would never condone the violence we have recently witnessed
If some northern Irish people choose to be known as Irish fair play. If some northern Irish people choose to be British pair play. It’s the job of the politicians to find a way of making that work. Unfortunately there are some intolerant ones in local NI politics and some incompetent egotistical arseholes both in Europe and running the British government. And a **** load of poverty.
You are right mate. Bloody disgrace the way squaddies carrying out politicians orders were treated afterwards. We’re seeing the same sort of thing after Afghanistan. Never, ever, trust bloody politicians.
Think that's why recruitment has dropped off dramatically by not backing the ones carrying out orders,They tried to make it easier for people to join lowering the standards which left regular troops scratching their heads at what had joined, most didn't make it through basic training, so then plan 2 invest in robots and IT weapons and reduce the troops, all it need was to back them up
Always been the same mate, no idea why people join up tbh. Just over 100 years ago my Great Uncle Tommy was killed, 2 weeks before the end of WW1, near Venice. His body was buried there without a chance of a NE mining family visiting the grave. I made the journey recently to put flowers on his grave and pay my respects ... ... looking at the book of condolences I was the first name in his section, poor buggers.
There will always be an element of rent a mob. But, for me, I’m sorry it’s too easy to blame it solely on that. The border and Brexit is massive in contributing to this. And Johnson knew it would be, which is why he promised, neither him or a Conservative government would do it. Before err doing it
That's no excuse. There are issues everywhere, as big as these, but people aren't throwing petrol bombs at each other and the police.
I’m sorry but it’s caused lots of problems that were anticipated. There is never an excuse for rioting, but the situation Brexit left Northern Ireland in can’t be dismissed easily
I'm not dismissing anything. Because of Brexit I'm having to leave my home in France. They want me to take out a residents permit, a work permit, health insurance, register my car here, apply for a French driving licence, etc etc etc. If I send a £5 gift to my 5 year old granddaughter I have to fill in a full customs declaration and pay duty. But I'm not out throwing petrol bombs at people doing their job .... no excuse I'm afraid.
I'm a big boy Janey and can cope. What it meant was that I wouldn't receive health care, couldn't collect my pension, would have to surrender my UK licence etc. But what's much worse is that my 5 year old granddaughter was learning French on our Skype calls and loving it. But now, if she wants to work in France, after University, she can't without loads of bureaucratic hoop jumping. We've effectively cut off future generations from Europe in exchange for our own coloured passports and imaginary fish quotas. What a massive mistake ....
