At best is it completely pedantic pete territory.

If they can "resolve" hand ball yet steadfastly refuse to move off this offside stuff it indicates to me they think this "science" is reliable.

    IMO the way they operate:

    a) breaks the basic tenant that the on field officials have first say. Refs have to go look to decide now but the lino must be ignored. the guy never flagged yesterday

    b) breaks the spirit of the offside rule. If you run forward you will lead forward so at best your trailing leg on the step is what a deferer has to worry about. you are defending you are just running out. the forward is at a severe disadvantage as level is impossible. Your sleeve will play you off if level every time.

    c) it is utterly pedantic without any possible way to really prove as the cameras simple cannot see closely enough nor can the camera be consistent. at best they are using a guess. at worst they are deliberately misplacing the lines. The so called vertical lines often don't look vertical to anyone.

The only way to resolve this now is an admission of getting it wrong and as we all know they are very very bad at admitting any weakness

The offside part is to find obvious errors. The only fair way forward is to draw a thick line through the defender and say if the forward is outside that then we will over rule the onfield official. The linesman needs to be crystal it is his job to flag, not to keep his flag down.

We should not be talking about the type of thing we saw with trent either. We saw the same on kabak v real but nobody mentioned that benzema raised his elblow to push kabak as well. Ref waves it away then imo its done.

If we are not happy with that put in reviews for managers to call. We need to end the pedantic types over the refs shoulders on every instant. a player flops about in the midfield and no var. it only turn on and interferes for pen shouts but disproportionally impacts on the game.

this was to fix unfairness to side getting screwed over by bent refs looking after certain sides. It has ended up hurting the small sides more.

This depends on the software they're using and how many points of perspective it employs.
If it's a 3-point perspective then vertical lines would not appear to be 90° to the plane of the pitch unless the action was directly in front of the camera. The angle varies depending on how far to the left or right the action is. If the lines are consistently drawn by the software (not by a human) then it should be fair enough for all players on that plane.
Tbh I've never looked closely at that because the whole thing is a disaster as far as I'm concerned.

this is correct it is due to perspective .
If you use VAR for offside you inevitably have this problem an linos are under instruction not to flag on close ones therefore to "equalise" the effect of VAR we are looking in minute detail at close offsides. The change to handball has made the problem worse as just in this weekend 2 goals have been ruled out when the legs of the attacker were well behind the defenders but the leading arm cost them .
One possible solution is to let the linos give an indication of what they would have given and then VAR has to show they were clearly wrong .
The best solution obviously is to bin the whole shambolic system but that won't happen unfortunately .

the issue i plainly see is software doesn't pick where, a person decides and i consistently see little effort to place the defender's line but massive effort in tweaking the attacker line to be as harsh as possible to use the very outside part of a body possible.

It is completely against the spirit of the offside rule. there is no advantage gained by 1mm. the rule for for square hanging.

more to the point is at what frame do they decide the passer played the ball as that is the starting point .

I think s but equally it needs to be noted that once he gets his time to grieve and all of that needed stuff we will eventually come back the fact that his kicking is suspect and has been since his first injury in 2019.

I feel a lot of clubs are missing a trick with thier press. he has an extremely bad habit of putting his foot on the ball and dragging it back under himself. The second he does it he can't see the ball, can' clear it and is ripe for the picking.

I personally would assign a player to close phillips fast but then to go right at alisson every chance he gets.

We need to improve on this for next season. alkisson needs to first time the ball. If players are not available he should smash it to the stand and bawl them out. klopp should be on the defenders case as well.

    Broken record time...

use players feet only; chip their boots and the ball (think they already are for goal line technology but could be wrong) and take the human element out the equation. Should be instant results too

true. there is absolutely no way to get to the mm when you have two or more cameras you are hoping that the frames are absolutely 100% synchronised in time.

It is a pure guess when the ball really leaves the passer and goes forward. but then we apply pseudo science we pretend we can see the perfect angle with the perfect definition and then draw lines to suit ourselves.

It is far far better that a person makes a call and the call is checked for clear wrong than we play the pretend science game.

the linesman didn't flag, the goal was given the ball was on the center circle to tip off. then the VAR played its game and villa were given a free on nothing but a guess/a deliberate act of malice. who knows which.

the goal line tech we use doesn't use chips just line cameras . How would you distinguish between the ball hitting the ground or foot plus how do you protect the chips from damage ?

    As Carra said on commentary.

we all grew up playing and watching and level was onside. Now there is no such thing as level. It’s gone out the game

well if they flag and were wrong then VAR is irrelevant and cannot be used for offside .

the thing is var isn’t the issue with offside. And what you say makes no difference because every offside you can ‘prove’ it was clearly wrong by showing there is a part of the body over the line. in the rule back that is offside.

but they need to change the law. Level needs to be level. only way I see this changing is

1, they change to say some part of your body has to be onside - this will create more goals but you end up with same issue where you’ll be onside by a fraction, would people be happier?

2, you change to say your feet must be behind oppo feet. But again what ever way you do it you’ll still have fraction on and off so get marginal calls.

3, you go drastic and use some sort of clear and obvious naked eye judgement. But then you’re coming down to someone in a studio using their judgement which is no diff from lino at the pitch, other than they can freeze to get a better check. But still becomes subjective.

4, you let the lino on the field make the decision. That decision is used, but play continues and it’s then checked and if you can see within 5 seconds with the naked eye it’s a huge error it can be overturned?

what ever way though, if you use var for offside, you have to accept that offside is offside no matter how small amount, or that you use naked eye judgement and you get inconsistent decisions.

no, only when the whistle is blown.

a flag is irrelevant until the whistle is actually blown.

either the flag is needed or it is not. If not then take it away completely and let the game run and run. however Teams will hang out offside and then just take every advantage until its time to score.

the point of all of the changes to offside was to speed up the game and make it flow not have 20 offsides a half with teams just stepping up. in one step VAR has taken it all away as the teams stepping up best and just playing offside are prospering.

We did. vvd and gomez were masters of it last season. Our defensive line for frees was just so high and ran out.
