Two questions that Pompey fans may find difficult to answer. I have put a reciprocal thread on the Saints board. Which past Southampton player do you most respect and why? Which current Southampton player do you most respect and why?
Swallowing my pride - Past player is Matt le tissier. Kept them up for most of their time in the prem and was undoubtly a very talanted player. - Current player is Adam Lalalala or something like that. Watched him when they played Leeds and was very impressed.
Well, Devo. 14 sensible replies on the Saints board to the reverse question, and yet only the Hermanator has posted here. Don't be shy, Pompeyites. There is so much to admire, so many to choose from!
I don't think there are 14 of us on here! I liked Mick Channon, very funny guy too and Le Tiss. Both were great players. It could be argued that Matt was in a class of his own, by that, I mean his style of play and I don't think there will ever be a player like that again, the game has changed too much. The only player I think you could possibly compare him to, from the past, would be Len Shackleton. I must admit to not having seen much of Southampton recently but Lambert should get a mention, as a lot of us thought he would find the championship a bit beyond him, but how wrong we were.
a lot of you thought league 1 was beyond him when we played you last ! tubby lambo i hear you all say?
Singing Blue, I would warmly welcome your remarks on past and current Saints players that you respect. And I don't want any scurrilous remarks about how you respect Tubby Lambo for eating his way through a bakers shop If you do, I shall set Sweep on you.
Past Ian Branfoot their best Manager. Present Kelvin Davis for sticking in there when times got tough.
For shear class and ability Le Tiss seem the obvious choice but the player I most respect is Alan Ball He served both clubs with distinction and he was equally revered by both sets of fans. He successfully crossed the divide and united opinion - a rare achievement. As for today's players, probably Kelvin Davies. He remained loyal and didn't jump ship when it was foundering.
I'd better answer my own question! For the past I will go for Bobby Stokes. Born and raised in Portsmouth he is famous, of course, for scoring the winner as Second Division Southampton beat Manchester Utd in the 1976 FA Cup Final. What a pity he was taken away at the tragically young age of just 44. For the present; for all the pisstaking that has been dished out toward him on here, I'd go for Lambo [nothing to do with bakeries] as he seems to be the type of goal scorer we're lacking!
Ok Rich I will have a go at this!......................... 1. Alan Shearer who went on to do a great job with Newcastle and of course England 2. Tubby Lambert for having the audacity to turn up for training and matches , and get paid ourageous wages, despite that spare tyre round his middle I can feel a pie article coming on........is there any truth in the rumour that Lambo used the International break to visit some chums and fellow members of his ,in Scotland? http://www.fbpecs.co.uk/
Looks like I managed to entice him out... SB3, I am disturbed to hear that you are a plastic Geordie. I hope you don't go around effecting a Geordie accent to sound cool - would make you sound like a Channel 4 presenter!
You have to read between the lines to understand the intent and rationale behind the article! What about Tubby's social club?
Lets be serious here Rich, Singing Bluefew3 doesn't watch Pompey to know who there best players have been, Let alone the South Coasts Top Team.
