However, the way I see it is that the only way we were going to win that game was to go 2 down. We needed that for confidence and proof we can do it.

My positive take on it anyway ;)

VAR can't get involved for that. Only for the foul by KWP. Yes he was fouled but VAR can only advise that KWP committed a foul for a penalty.

As I suspected, VAR is complete bollocks then.

VAR also missed Beds shirt tug, so that evened things up so to speak?

VAR got the ref to check the pitchside monitor. Why would he then not look at the whole incident.

I don't get those who thought game over when 2-0 down after 28mins.

We could be winning 2-0 going into the 91st of 3 added minutes and I'd still not thinking game over.

Tom can you provide some proof of this? My understanding is that the foul on KWP would be looked at by VAR in the same way if a foul in the buildup to the goal would be? Also the same for if an attacker was offside in the buildup to a penalty incident then a penalty would not be given due to an offside?

Not questioning you but if you are correct then that seems ridiculous!

edit to add the whole point of my post was to question you but not in a confrontational way (been enough of that on this thread) more in disbelief of VAR laws if you are correct!

Because we hadn't come back from 2-0 down to win for over 5 years, and Burnley are usually very good at closing up shop, whilst we usually huff and puff and get nowhere

Yep, for me it was a combination of the last 12 or so games and the fact it was Burnley. They are (usually) very very good at grinding a game into utter boredom when 1 up, I thought we didn't have a chance when they got 2. Happily I was wrong.

I also agree with whoever said that'll do wonders for the teams confidence. Our players seem to be very streakey for want of a better word. A win against West brom and I can start focusing on which tattoo shop will do Ralph proud

I guess it’s only if it had been a goal?

    • offence by the attacking team in the build-up to or scoring of the goal
    a. Goal/no goal
    (handball, foul, etc.)
    • offside: position and offence • ball out of play prior to the goal

    although..

The starting point for a phase of play that leads to a goal or penalty incident will be limited to the immediate phase and not necessarily go back to when the attacking team gained possession.

I do think we did get away with Bednarek pulling Wood's shirt at 3-2 so yes we were unlucky with the pen that was awarded but Bednarek could have been sent off as well as a penalty awarded so I don't think we came out too badly!

Absolutely spot on. I am a bed wetter, it’s my age, so I do panic when we play badly. I do whinge on a bit, but other people just see things differently. We have a club that isn’t on the brink of financial disaster, I hope, so we are better off than a lot of supporters. Tomorrow is another day! Obviously.

Didn’t see the incident yesterday but I have been reading that we could have got a penalty for a Ben Mee handball....was it a pen?

It was as much of a pen as the one given against Bertie recently ie not a pen.
The shot was on target and at pace and hit the arm close to the body.

Strangely enough, I thought yesterday that Marriner reffed the game (as in the bloke in the centre of the pitch) very well. The problems, as ever, tend to come from the people that aren't there.

Kind of tells you all you need to know about VAR. It was brought in to reduce controversy, and yet pretty much all the controversy these days revolves around VAR.

Unless your name is Mason or Dean.

There were two similar incidents of ball hitting the arm within the penalty area (Mee and Bertrand), the arms were not in an unatural position so neither were given, after VAR checks.

Now I'm not normally one for browsing Twitter but as it's a bank holiday I was just reading some of the tweets under #saintsfc and this one caught my eye:

Needless to say the responses to this tweet are highly amusing. :)

Yeah there were a few who had great spells and poor spells. The ones I mentioned I thought did well throughout. I hope the win will lift the confidence of everyone, especially the Redmond’s and Diallos of the team.
