Grant McCann hopes to see more of the same from Tom Eaves and Regan Slater following their performances against Gillingham.

Eaves led the line against his former club and scored a fine back-post header, while Slater looked assured in a deep-lying midfield role.

The pair were making their first league starts since January and December respectively and could feature again against Crewe Alexandra this afternoon.

Injury problems have restricted Eaves’ involvement this season but McCann is hoping the forward can build on an encouraging display.

“Tom’s trained really well this week,” said McCann. “He’s had the bit between his teeth.

“He went into the game in a good place. I was asked about him not starting in a while but you could see physically he was good.

“His distances were great, his link-up play was excellent for a large part of the game, he got the goal and probably could have had another two or three.

“The good thing about Tom is he continues to get chances. In this division, historically, you’ve seen he’s deadly.

“If we get him those chances again, I’m sure Tom will take them.”

Slater came into the side after Alfie Jones was required to fill in for the injured Reece Burke at centre-half and McCann said he had no hesitation about putting him in.

“Regan’s a great kid,” McCann said. “You can tell he comes from a Sheffield United Chrissy Wilder team.

“Unbelievable character, unbelievable attitude. He gets his head down every day and trains, no bother, no drama. Unbelievable the way he goes about his stuff on the training ground.

“It didn’t surprise me. He probably didn’t get the credit he deserved when he came on so early against Burton, away from home, when we lost the game. He was excellent in the game.

“To start the game and show what he’s about, we were all impressed with him.

“I’ve never had any problems about playing Regan. It’s just been the form of Richie Smallwood and Alfie Jones that have kept him out of the team, and the form of Greg Docherty and George Honeyman because he can play further forward.

“His versatility is great and I was pleased he delivered that because he shows that on an everyday level.”

I see (hear) what you mean. The song predates George Formby however.
