Sadly gone. Pleasure to watch him in the flesh, proper and I mean proper showman and character. Privileged to see him in our Safc colours. R.i.P.
RIP Frank, pretty sure he scored in the 69th minute on his debut for us, perfect timing, great to watch.
Top bloke, a proper showman and golden boot winner to boot. RIP Frank Worthington https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...former-england-leicester-forward-dies-aged-72
Wonderful player, absolutely magical feet. I recall him playing for leeds at Roker, Sunderland fans singing the ****y Worthington song, two weeks later or so he signed for us and it was "oh Frankie Frankie ".....
I wish we could have got him in his prime.. Very skillful player even at the end of his career when he played for us..
Not for the people around us it wasn't, Bucky . . . . it was still '****y' but we then sang it affectionately
In footballing terms Frank was an old man when he joined us, but he still had that magic in his boots. Running around at 90 miles an hour wasn't his game and he simply drifted through each match with ease and even at the end of his career, causing havoc with his joyful use of the ball. RIP Frank.
An absolute legend - on and off the pitch. Worthing joined Sunderland in 1982, making 19 appearances and scoring twice for the Wearsiders, before leaving for Southampton. While at Sunderland Durban paired McCoist with Frank Worthington - a gifted forward, but one who enjoyed the high life off the pitch perhaps a little too much. Still, Worthington became a big part of why McCoist loved his time on Wearside so much. Ally McCoist on his time at Sunderland: “My room-mate at Sunderland was Frank Worthington - the legendary Frank Worthington - and I’m an 18-year-old lad coming down to room with this legend. “I remember we beat Manchester City last game of the season at Roker Park and then we were on the 7.30pm flight to Magaluf - the whole Sunderland team. “And for five days over there my room-mate was Frank Worthington! And there answers your next question of why I never scored so many goals at Sunderland...
RIP Frank one of the great entertainers, should have played more games for England, but for the FA at the time being **** scared of a "maverick ", God speed
Sad news, one of my footballing heroes. As said by others he wasn't in his prime when he was here playing for the Lads but I and many others saw him earlier in his career and he was genuinely one of the greats. My 3 favourite non Sunlun players of the 70's were Frank, Tony Currie and Stan Bowles. All 3 were outstanding players who played the game the way it was meant to be played and they played with a smile on their faces. R.I.P. Frank, thanks for the memories.
RIP Frank. God bless and best wishes to all of his own. What a player. There aren't many who can make you smile when they are playing, even sometimes for the other side! But he was one of them. All too brief a time here, and all too late in the coming, but what a treat it was to watch him.
He was past his prime when he played for us but was still the most skillful player on the pitch! A joy to watch. Thanks Frank, RIP.
RIP Frank, the archetypal Journeyman Footballer. I wonder if he ended up moving on so often to keep a few steps ahead of the women?
