After a very bad run of form where Pompey have won only one of the last six league games, and won only five out of seventeen game in all competitions since Janauary - losing ten of them - Kenny Jackett lost his job.

After almost four years in the job he's got pretty good stats - only two managers in the history of the club have better win ratios, and neither played as many games as him, and only eight managers played more games than him - so he'll go down as one of our statistically successful manager, but he never quite achieved the end result.

Twice we got to the League One playoffs only to lose in the Semi-Finals both times, and twice we got to the EFL Cup final but only managed one win.

Overall, Jackett has been a successful Portsmouth Manager but he's likely not going to be remembers as such becuase of the play-off defeats and the dire performance in the second EFL Trophy Final which cost him his job.

Now, I think the Covid outbreak Pompey suffered in December derailed the season and we might have pushed on to win the league if that never happened, but it did and we've never found our form since. Jackett might have even lost the dressing room after the recent poor form.

So even I, someone who is not generally in favour of sacking managers, believe it was the right decision for him to go.

The question is, who will be his successor.

The front-runner is looking to be Daniel Stendel. A former Hannover 96, Barnsley and Hearts boss. Still pretty early into his career as a manager, he won 50% of his games at Hannover but still got sacked, won almost 50% of his games at Barnsley and got them promoted to the Championship at the first time of asking but got sack, and was turning things around at Hearts when the pandemic hit causing the season to end and costing him his job as Hearts got relegated. He's a well regarded young coach but wants a long-term contract and reports are that Pompey were offering a short-term deal, so that may prevent him from securing the role.

Neil Harris is another favourite. A former Millwall and Cardiff boss who managed to get Millwall promoted from League One via the playoffs and resigned from them with a 41% win ratio over 245 games, while at Cardiff he got them to finish 5th in the Championship in his first season before losing in the play-offs and getting sacked the next year during a bad run of form.

Other, reported, candidates include Lee Bowyer, Chris Coleman, Danny Crowley and Phil Parkinson.

Kenny Jackett sacked by Pompey ?! Well done the Eisner family for making this important decision, whilst we still have the chance of getting back into a play off position under a new manager. Whoever we choose, needs to join the club as quickly as possible, so that things can change on the pitch.

I am extremely happy and relieved to hear this news, and hope we sign the right person. All the possible applicants named by MAJR above are of interest, but definitely NOT Phil Parkinson who messed up big time at Sunderland !

Stendel wants a long-term contract and Pompey might not be looking for a long-term appointment until the summer, so that might prevent him gettig the job, but he remains bookies favourite.

Meanwhile, Matt Taylor has reportedly had discussions about taking over at Pompey: https://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/...turn-for-former-favourite-matt-taylor-3166238 He's currently an under 18's coach at Spurs and, I'd expect, most Pompey fans would wish him well if he got the job but would prefer a more experianced man at the helm.

Portsmouth fans on twitter are ridiculous. Loads of them put German flags in their Twitter handles and kept tweeting German flag emoticons, now they're tweeting cow emoticons and making cow related puns for the cowley brothers. Honestly, having this much enthusiasm for anything is only ever going to end badly.

PORTSMOUTH CLOSING IN ON APPOINTMENT OF 42-YEAR-OLD AS JACKETT REPLACEMENT.

please log in to view this image

Danny Cowley will be the next Portsmouth manager after Kenny Jackett’s dismissal at the weekend, beating German Daniel Stendel to the role, per Neil Allen of Portsmouth News.

Cowley was said to be of interest to Charlton Athletic as well, but talkSPORT’s Alex Crook reported earlier this morning that he was no longer in the running for that particular job.

And that looks like it is because he has decided to take the hot-seat at Fratton Park, replacing Jackett after nearly four years in charge.

Jackett left Pompey outside the play-off places in League One and ended his tenure with an EFL Trophy final defeat to Salford City on penalties.

And his incoming replacement could be considered a coup after last managing in the Championship, with Cowley joining Huddersfield back in September 2019 after a successful three years at Lincoln City, who he took from non-league to League One.

Cowley and his brother Nicky lasted just 10 months at the Terriers though – after guiding them away from relegation trouble they were sacked by Phil Hodgkinson, who wanted to pursue a different vision for the club both from a style of play view on the pitch and off the field – with Cowley reportedly wanting full control over transfers.

The Essex-born coach will arrive on the south coast looking to guide Pompey into the play-offs with just 12 games remaining – but first he needs to arrest the recent slump in form which has seen the club lose four games on the spin in the league.

    Happy for Cowley.

Don't know a huge amount about him but just want the club to unite and kick on.

Pretty much a trial for him if its until the end of the season.

Danny Cowley had a playing career in non-league football before moving into coaching at Concord Rangers. He began his coaching career as Assistant Manager of Concord Rangers between 2007 and 2008 before becoming their manager, and would remain so until 2015.

As Concord Rangers Manager his first season was a success as they were promoted to the Istmian League Division One North, and the second season was almost as successful as they almost achieve back-to-back promotion. His third season saw Rangers promoted to the Istmian Premier League followed by two seasons of consolidation before he won promotion to the National League South, and his final season at the club saw them get to the first round of the FA Cup and finish just short of the playoffs.

He moved on to Braintree, where he spent only one season. He led them to their highest ever finish of 3rd in the National League and reached the playoff semi-final before losing 201 on aggregate.

He next took charge of Lincoln City, where he was Manager from 2016 to 2019. In his first season in charge he won the National League with two games to spare and got the club back to the Football League after a six year absence, and also went on a great FA Cup run where Lincoln knocked out Ipswich, Brighton and Burnley before losing to Arsenal. In 2017/18 he won the EFL Trophy and finished 7th in League Two. The following season he guided Lincoln to promotion to League One as League Two Champions.

He the spent a year in charge of Huddersfield where he successfully avoided relegation but was sacked after the owner wanted a "different vision" for the club.

Cowley is a manager who has come up through the leagues with a winning pedigree at every level with several club (save, perhaps, the Championship), so he's definitely worth a punt.

Managerial record by team and tenure
    Team - Played - Win - Draw - Lose - Win %
    Concord Rangers - 381 - 201 - 76 - 104 - 52.8
    Braintree Town ......53 - 26 - 13 - 14 - 49.1
    Lincoln City .........184 - 98 - 48 - 38 - 53.3
    Huddersfield ........40 - 13 - 11 - 16 - 32.5
    Total - ................658 - 338 - 148 - 172 - 51.4

    Pretty good really.

And let's be honest we've tried the experienced route and it didn't work.

Let's hope he does a professional job.

Looking at his record at Huddersfield, I don't get why they sacked him. They were in free fall, when he arrived.

He seems to have a good historical record, then again so did Jackett, excluding Rotherham

Pompey Appoint Danny Cowley As Head Coach - Nicky Cowley arrives as assistant head coach

please log in to view this image

Pompey have appointed Danny Cowley as first team head coach on an initial deal until the end of the current season.

The 42-year-old former Lincoln and Huddersfield boss will be assisted by his younger brother Nicky.

Danny Cowley said: “This is a club with unbelievable tradition, so the board didn’t need to sell it to us. We’re proud and privileged to be here.

“Hopefully they saw two hard-working people who love the game and we’re delighted to be at Pompey.

“We always have the ambition of leaving a club in a better position than we found it. We’ll be doing everything in order to achieve that here.”

Pompey chief executive Mark Catlin added: “Having spent time with Danny and Nicky over the past few days – and speaking to those who know them well – I am delighted that we can finally announce their arrival at Fratton Park.

“We are all totally focused on giving Portsmouth Football Club the best chance of promotion in what is now, effectively, a 12-game mini-season.

“I would like to thank them both for the enthusiastic and professional way they have approached working with us for this period and there is an absolute collective desire to achieve success.”

Nicky Cowley said: “We’re looking forward to the challenge and this really is a great opportunity for us.

“The experience we’ve had in the game can hopefully stand us in good stead to have a strong finish to the season.”

After beginning his managerial career with stints at Concord Rangers and Braintree, Danny Cowley enjoyed great success in charge of Lincoln.

In his first season at the helm, he guided them to the National League title, with the side amassing 99 points.

The Imps also became the first non-league side to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for 103 years during that 2016/17 campaign.

They did so by winning 1-0 at top-flight Burnley in the last 16, courtesy of a late goal by current Blues defender Sean Raggett.

Lincoln reached the League Two play-offs the following season – losing to Exeter over two legs – and then went up again as champions 12 months later.

Cowley departed for struggling Championship side Huddersfield in September 2019 and collected the division’s ‘Manager of the Month’ award in October.

He guided them to survival in the second tier, but left following a victory over promotion-chasing West Brom in the penultimate fixture.

Cowley spent his entire playing career in the non-league game and has a degree in physical education, previously working as a teacher at a school in Essex.

Brother Nicky has been his assistant at Concord, Braintree, Lincoln and Huddersfield, while the pair were also team-mates at Romford.
