... is strangely addictive When we played Portsmouth at Fratton Park, in the play off semi-final, I flew back for the game. I got the National Express and met the Nottingham lads in town. One of the RTG lads sorted out tickets for us all, including a couple of lads on here. I was dropped off by the lads, at Gatwick, after the game. My flight was at 7am so I wandered around until everything closed then found a corner to sleep on the floor. I've been doing shyte, like that, for decades and never thought twice. But, on Tuesday I set up laptop for the game, stocked up the fridge and had a Zoom meeting with the lads on the smart TV ... ... what a night! But, over the last couple of days, I've realised I'm slightly addicted to it. The whole thing cost peanuts and I was in bed for midnight, a rarity for actual games. I really don't know how I'll react when the stadiums are opened up. Have I become 'institutionised' or just lazy, is it wrong to 'support' my team by drinking lager and shouting at a screen. Only time will tell.
As much as I've missed going to the games I've really enjoyed a Saturday afternoon in the house with my 2 sons and my daughter. All watching the game with plenty of cans. My wife goes out with my other 2 daughters and comes back after the game with a fish shop tea. To be honest it's been great.
Hone games i want to be there... Away games can be hassle...watching streams/TV at home I enjoy.. its good not to miss any games
I'm just worried that 'the habit' has been broken and I'm not sure how I'll react to the grounds being open. Attending from France isn't that expensive but it is an effort. Even travelling from Mansfield makes matches, especially at night, a big investment. A typical night match is leaving Mansfield at 4pm, arrive at 6.30pm and a quick couple of pints. Afterwards is a boring drive in the dark and home before midnight if all goes well. It'll be interesting to see how people react.
I'm a bit superstitious about watching the lads live on tele, think it was the City final I last watched but am seriously thinking of getting a day pass from Sky for Sunday. Trouble is I kick every ball and drive our lass mad so haven't tried the streaming much, when it first started I had a go but the quality was awful and kept dropping off so haven't bothered since mind the football hasn't been that good either but things seem to be changing. As for going when lock down is over I'm seriously thinking of getting back into it for home games although a season card isn't an option as I work three weekends out of six so it would have to be pay per match. Bloody Sunderland once your drawn in there's no escape, I've threatened to give it all up more times than I've had hot dinners and I'm still here.
Nothing ever beats the feeling of walking up access and the pitch opening up in front of you. That can never be replaced. Never.
It's possible mate, I really don't know. If I lived near the SOL, and could toddle down on a Saturday, I'd have an SC and never miss ... ... but every match is at least £100 and usually twice that. Flights back and forth are 4 days apart so that's quite some time for Mrs Smug to be left alone with the credit card
Know what you mean Smug. When l feel the family pulling, l try to get flights to coincide with home games. Daren’t say which has priority. KTF
I only live 9 miles from SOL and still have season ticket. TBH over the last 4 seasons I have sometimes found going to every home match a bit of a chore at times but living so close felt obliged to attend. The pre and post match drinks being rhe deciding factor if I'm honest. Even if the home match was televised I would still go to match. However this season I've got used to watching all league matches in comfort and warmth of my own bar at home and if same facility was on offer next season I daresay I would opt for that for most matches especially during the winter. I think this must be an age thing would never have dreamed of doing that 5 years ago but watching crap over those seasons didn't really help
Watching on TV is ok as a stop gap but I can't wait to get back to the SoL with my young son and my dad. We usually go into the Fans museum first for a few drinks first then over to the SoL. The boy has been a great excuse for me to get a season ticket again after I gave it up a few years ago, he loves it. Had him to the efl trophy games on a night and into the Tavern beforehand! Even been down to the rezzies a canny bit. I can't wait to get back to the Stadium.
I struggle to watch us on TV. I need to be there. The buzz, the passion, the wisecracks the SoL has it all. Plus a small Pimms in The Victory helps calm my nerves before the game.
I've loved the savings! On a match day (on top of the £13 or so that the ticket costs) I'll have 3 or 4 cans before I go (about a fiver). I get a day pass on the bus (£4 or so). Bout 3 pints in the pub prematch (maybe £10). Often a quick one in the ground before kick off (£5 give or take). A couple at half time (I'll round it down to £8 this time). After the match I'm often starving, so £4 on a burger. Meet my mate for another 3 pints watching a bit of the 5:30 kick off (£10) before going home . Never really thought about it, but that's what £46, not counting the match ticket cost? When I'm at home I probably have about 6 cans (£9). Maybe have to pay £10 for a stream (but the bairn gets the home ones with his season card so I pay nowt for those). About £70 a month I might be saving. Its mental. I mean, I could just cut down on the drink but it's the only time I get out of the house tbh. I'm missing the games, the pints with mates, and I'll go back as soon as I can, but I can see why some just stop in the pub or watch at home.
