Even when a judge threw the case out at trial the old bill maintained it was him...took a further 15 years to get the real murderer found. Stagg was completely innocent but had his life ruined, cos he was "a bit weird" and an easy target for the press and old bill.

Yes that was the case. His life was ruined. His was a great example of how people pay far more attention to someone being accused of murder and presumed guilty than they do when he was eventually found to be completely innocent. You just can't undo the damage.
Was interested in the case cos of the appalling police set up of him and then cos it turned out to be a serial killer and rapist who attacked woman in SE London in the late 80s and 90s. He was caught in the mid 90s and jailed and in the mid 2000s dna evidence proved it was him. Stagg still gets abused and blamed even today ffs.
