So Swansea 10 points behind, 1 game in hand, inferior goal difference. We're 10 points clear of 3rd place whatever happens with games in hand. Blackburn play Brentford on Friday.
I wouldn’t put too much stock in the goal difference because by definition to catch us up our goal difference would get hurt
Our goal difference is 7 goals better than Swansea's, which is a lot for a low scoring side to overtake. According to the BBC: "Blackburn had by far the better of the second half but could not find a winner as the Swans held firm. However, the hosts will be left to reflect on a frustrating evening when they produced more than enough chances to earn all three points against a Swansea side never at their best." The penalty was Swansea's only shot on target.
Sure, but to catch us up they need three wins and we need three losses. So that means our goal difference would be hit by at least 3 and theirs would improve by at least 3. That pretty much removes the seven difference - and that’s the minimum.
Hypothetically that's true and I know football is a funny game Rob, but Swansea seem to be scraping points with penalties when not performing particularly well. Does that suggest a power run through the final 11 games? The extra match tonight adds a physical and mental tiredness when they go to Luton on Saturday (much like we had before we played them). Add to that an intense 3 way battle for an automatic promotion place and the pressure mounts.
Sorry Rick I wasn’t clear - I’m not too worried about Swansea. I just meant our goal difference isn’t all that great.
As the table stands at the moment we have the best goal difference of any team and if we'd been a bit more clinical in front of goal we'd be out of sight.
Your example is right of course Rob so I see your point, but a couple of weeks back our goal difference was behind the others and now we're ahead of them. Things could change and our good run ended, but so much seems to be going our way as players return from injury and Pukki, Cantwell and Buendia are in such good form. I don't think we'll need goal difference in the end but it does indicate that we're outperforming the others at the moment.
There’s something really annoying I’ve found about this site, I think, it’s that it seems if you accidentally press reply to someone it then goes to the reply box and, as it auto saves your draft after only about ten seconds, you can very easily go on a different thread and come back but the quote will still be there without you noticing. So you then click reply on a different post, merrily type your tripe, and then it’s only after you post that you realise there’s some extra words there!
I think Barnsley's last couple of games demonstrate how well we've done so far this season despite the criticisms. As Barnsley's performances have become more impressive and the points stack up, opposing teams have started to approach games against them far more cautiously, and now they are facing the same problems we have all season: ten men behind the ball. When teams haven't done that against us, we've looked impressive; when they have, we've struggled, but, to our credit, we've nearly always found a way to win.
