He's become a bit of a bottler.... but then he doesn't need the money.... DeChambeau gets more lucky breaks than enough.... and he complained about every bunker.... they are a penalty area FFS... TPC Sawgrass next weekend...
Did you mean Westwood, as McIlroy, apart from the first round, steadily got worse rather than imploding?
I said a few years ago that I wouldn't be surprised if McIlroy never won another major and I stand by that prediction, just doesn't seem to have bottle for it
That seems to be his Achilles heel, he has a wonderful swing but does seem to lack the strength of mentality these days to see the job through.
Was nice to see Westy still up there and competing at 47 .. soon to be 48 .. oh how I'd love to see him win a major before he is done .. alas I suspect his chances have gone sadly. But watching him plot his was round while happy Gilmore smashed his way round was a delight to watch .. just shows even at the advancing years he can still ne competitive
I think all the way yesterday Westwood was just saying 'whatever'...@!! He's done more in his career than DC will ever achieve short of winning a major and the thing of it is, Westwood is so relaxed now in his personal life and his age that he doesn't stress and that gives him a chance still. His putting has improved immeasurably as has his chipping and I wouldn't be surprised to see him go close again in a major this year...
tbh if anyone deserves it , it is him ... lets be honest if Garcia can win one then Westwood sure as hell can
I always wanted Westwood to win a major, hell of a nice guy. I was walking rounds Loch Lomand once at the Scottish Open, and he came and had a chat with us when waiting at one hole to tee off, not many do that. Top bloke.
He has actually won 2 since breaking up with her, but that was immediately afterwards. He split with her in May and won the British Open in July and the USPGA just after that. But those were his last major wins, so its 7 years.
It seems its the blight that has plagued him all his career .. too often when there is a sniff of a real big win he misses the all too crucial putts .. as you say he seems relaxed now with where he is in the world but yet again had chances but just couldn't take them at Bay Hill. The birdie chance at 16 being the obvious one on Sunday. I long for him to win a major but tbf just don't see it happening unless Helen whispers in his ear and puts him on a promise coming down the home stretch lol. Having said that the Masters is coming and he ALWAYS plays well there so fingers crossed.
First round of the Players.... good round from Westwood again -3... MEANWHILE ... McIlroy +7.... !!!... ... Garcia -7... Stenson +12 EDITED
It's the Players Championship (the "fifth major"), not the PGA. Yorkshire's Matt Fitzpatrick up there again. He's so consistent.
McIlroy's 8 at the 18th is how I would probably play it. Tee shot into the water. Takes a drop 3rd shot into the water Takes a drop 5th onto the green 3 putts which makes a quadruple bogey. But lets focus on the good things. Fitzpatrick doing well again, as is Westwood. Also, 17 days until I can play again. Not allowing golf during lockdown was one of the least defensible restrictions.
