Best has obviously got quite an enviable strike rate for us so far but he's still not got everyone on side yet. however if he was to score say 15 goals this season and make a similar start next year do you think he would ever be considered 'fashionable' enough to be worth pretty big money??

if we go back a few years the likes of harewood were banging in a fair amount of goals and you could say the same thing about the likes of DJ Campbell or Kevin Philips but they were never really considered 'fashionable' enough to be picked up by one of the bigger clubs for a decent amount of cash.

If Leon Best were to be able to continue with his ratio of 1 in 2 could you ever see one of the big boys sniffing around him for big money as you have to remember he's still only 24 or something.

he still has to convince me yet and if he does surpass my expectations i'd obviously not want anyone sniffing around him either but you get what i'm saying.

    discuss.

No he wouldn't command big money in my opinion. Unless he hit 20 goals a season for at least two seasons running.

thing is though you get some strikers like gyan for example that doesn't score that many but gets a lot of plaudits for his displays and he has a big fan base globally after the world cup. he's a fashionable player and he went for big money. Bendtner would still command aroound £10-12 even though he's never been prolific. this isn't a dig at the mackems by the way its just those are two examples that spring to mind. i'm sure theres plenty others...carlton cole a couple of seasons ago for instance. by 'big' money i don't mean aguero type money but more in the £15m bracket.

He isn't really classy enough. Just something in his play doesn't impress people, even if he does score 15+ goals.

Quite moronic really. A team could have quite a canny striker if they could look past that pointless side of things.

thing is would you call someone like Carroll or even shearer classy? you certainly wouldn't call someone like kenwyne jones classy and he went for decent money too. look at benjani at portsmouth he scored plenty but he was never fashionable enough to be picked up by anyone bigger (and actually be played unlike at city...)

It would be interesting if anyone could name any players, that have been widely accepted as being a donkey for most of their career, who have then turned into big money earning superstars.

David James is closest bar the big money, England number 1 goalkeeper for the world cup despite being known as calamity James also has the record for most clean sheets i think in the premier league.

I've been looking through lists of big money flops, but they're all players who were quite good in their own right, but were **** when they came to the Premier League.

No, but they have an asset which perhaps Best doesn't have. That's the ability to hold the ball up and win headers as well as score goals. We all agree that Best isn't the best 'footballer' and all he does is score goals which is why he will be a good striker but not one that will fetch a lot of money. Basically what I am saying is, if Best goes through a dry patch what will he offer? Other strikers can go through a dry patch but still offer a lot for the team, Best probably can't do that.

i dunno i actually think he's quite good at his link up play actually. but he would be dropped in a heart beat if he stops scoring regularly.

But then that ruins the formation!

    Simpson - Taylor - Colo - Taylor
    Obertan - Cabaye - Tiote - Jonas
    Ben Arfa
    Best Ba

Edit: Assuming of course we play 12 players or no goalkeeper <laugh><doh> Ignore me, it's early!

Aye Shearer was classy, he had the best technique of any striker I can remember. Carroll was also a classy player for me, but not at Alans level.

As for wor Bestie, yes is the answer for me. If he scored 20 goals two seasons in a row, everyone would take no notice regardless of this stigma he seems to have attached. You don't have to be classy like Shearer or Carroll to command a big fee. Darren Bent is hardly classy, indeed he is pretty mechanical. But he scores and goals are worth a fortune. As you say Kenwyne Jones/Carlton Cole/Kevin Davies/Benjani/Jerome, loads of players command big money despite not fitting the typical superstar profile. I do think Bestie would probably need a couple of really good scoring seasons even though some of the aforementioned players didn't even require that. This is probably down to him being viewed essentially as an average lower league striker prior to Hughton taking a punt.

I take it back about Hughton and Best too. At the time despite having a lot of time for Hughton I was wholly unimpressed with the signing. I had him down with Perch as Hughton cock ups (all managers have them) Just goes to show what a good judge he was because Best could do **** all for the rest of his career, we've already had our moneys worth for me.

i agree. the fact that we signed him for somethign like £2m he's already paid that back in my opinion as we could easily fetch double that if we sold him to an up and coming championship side. the way you have to look at it is he won't be on big wages and we didn't pay a lot for him. he's basically inflated his market value to a point now that if we sold him we'd get our transfer fee and his wages for the duration he's been with us back meaning he's effectively scoring goals for free!
