Surprised he was only 82. As a child at the time myself he seemed old when he was on the telly. RIP

Yeah, sausage chips and curry sauce from Fulwell chippy then the whole family sat down to watch the legends banter - they were the start of proper football punditry, always remember The Saint laughing his head off to Greaves banter. Class entertainment pre-match.

RIP what a double act, thought Greavesy would have gone first with all his medical troubles.

RIP ISJ - Loved a Saturday lunchtime with him and Greavsie. Was a different time i those days - some times that was the only footage you saw of the midweek games

    RIP.

Like others S&J were essential viewing on Saturday dinner time. It marked the start of footy day which ended with match of the day and sandwiched in between was grandstand / world of sport and then sports report on the wireless, or a visit to Roker Park. Those were really happy days and The Saint was a big part of it.

Great player. Great punditry along with Sir James Greaves.
S & G were simply the best pre match show and a must watch show. So much good info from them and what a laugh.
Also surprised that he has gone before Jimmy.
Mind you i also wonder how the likes of Bob Dylan and Keith Richards are still alive when others have left us early

RIP Ian St John. Agreed, Saint and Greavsie was brilliant back in the day and essential viewing on a Saturday lunchtime. Genuine warmth, knowledge and humour from both of them, compared to today's bland, anodyne pundits or forced humour.

Always recall the joke about a notice on the church notice board which said what would you do if Jesus came back to earth , some Liverpool wit wrote underneath move Ian St John to inside right !
