Portsmouth race Championship clubs to sign Walsall defender Zak Jules.

Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town, Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City, Portsmouth, Peterborough and MK Dons all chasing Walsall centre-back Zak Jules, Football Insider can reveal. A recruitment source has told Football Insider all these clubs have been watching him and have been in contact with Walsall about a January deal.

The 23-year-old has played 19 times across all competitions this season and has filled in at left-back in recent weeks.

He moved to the Banks’s Stadium at the beginning of last season after a spell with Macclesfield Town and has played 41 times for Walsall.

The 6' 3" former Scotland Under-21 international has not played above League Two level previously. He’s a ball-playing left-sided centre-back.

He was on the books of Reading and Shrewsbury Town but did not make a competitive appearance for either club. Instead, he enjoyed loan spells Hemel Hempstead, Braintree, Motherwell, Chesterfield, Port Vale and Barnet.

Pompey have also added George Byers on loan this window but Kenny Jackett revealed he still has one place left for a player over the age of 21.

Alex Bass faces another month on the sidelines after suffering a leg stress fracture.

Kenny Jackett has revealed what was believed to be a calf injury for the keeper picked up in a training collision with team-mate Haji Mnoga, is in fact worse than feared. Pompey are concerned about the slow rate at which the 22-year-old is recovering.

Goalkeeper Lewis Ward has left Exeter City to join League One side Portsmouth on loan until the end of the season.
The 23-year-old 6' 5" keeper has penned a short-term deal at Fratton Park, with Pompey stopper Alex Bass set to miss most of February with a stress fracture on his calf.

It is Ward's second spell at the club, having previously been on loan for the academy team from Reading during the 2012/13 season.

Alex Bass Joins Southend On Emergency Loan.

The Shrimpers are allowed to make the signing outside of the transfer window because of an injury to their regular keeper Mark Oxley.

Mark Molesley’s side have bounced back from a poor start to the season to climb out of the League Two drop zone and won 3-1 at promotion-chasing Forest Green earlier in the week.

On loan Portsmouth keeper set for scan and x-ray after injury on Southend United debut !

SOUTHEND United manager Mark Molesley has yet to discover the full extent of the injury which cut short Alex Bass’ debut.

The on loan Portsmouth goalkeeper had to be taken off at half-time against Salford City at Roots Hall.

But Molesley was impressed by how Bass performed during his first 45 minutes in a Shrimpers shirt.

“It was a great debut from Alex,” said Molesley. “He looked very assured and calm so we will have to see how bad his injury is.

“He was upended twice and didn’t get the protection we felt he deserved and that’s culminated in him coming off.

“He got hit and then landed awkwardly as well but it’s more a lower limb injury than a dead leg.”

But further investigations will now be carried out. “Alex will be x-rayed and scanned,” said Molesley.

“The concern is there’s a previous injury and maybe it might be something similar.

“But between Portsmouth and ourselves we will get to the bottom of it and then decide where we go from there.”

I liked the way he introduced a group of youngsters during his tenure at FP. Sadly, as we slipped into División 4 we saw no more of him nor these young players (Pullar, Green, while Denyer, Foster and Kamara were sold for seasoned professionals).

No Portsmouth striking dynasty as Benjani Mwaruwari junior departs Fratton Park.

The son of Fratton hero Benjani Mwaruwari has been released by Pompey. Benjani junior had been in his second spell with the Blues and most recently associated with the under-16s.

However, it is understood the Academy elected not to offer the striker a scholarship, informing him three weeks ago. Benjani junior has since been trialling at Yeovil in a bid to win a deal with the National League outfit.

Nonetheless, for the romantics among the Fratton faithful, it’s disappointing not to see another Benjani make a name for himself with the Blues.

His dad was signed by Harry Redknapp from Auxure in January 2006 for a then-club record fee of £4.1m.

Benjani senior went on to become a key presence in the Great Escape, ultimately netting in the Blues’ 2-1 triumph at Wigan which confirmed their Premier League survival in April 2006.

The Zimbabwe international was sold to Manchester City in February 2008, following two hat-tricks in the 2007-08 season. However, the striker did return for an ill-fated second spell in the 2011-12 campaign when signed by Steve Cotterill on a free transfer.

In total, he made 94 appearances and scored 20 times and can always anticipate an excellent reception upon visits to Fratton Park.

Benjani senior also spent time coaching Pompey’s under-16s this season. The 42-year-old assisted Shaun North in coaching sessions on a twice-weekly basis to meet Uefa A licence criteria.

The family are based in Ringwood, although did move to South Africa for two years, with Benjani junior taken out of Pompey’s Academy.

Upon their return to England, the youngster rejoined the Blues’ youth setup, with this his third season back.

Who is Pierre Ekwah-Elimby? Chelsea teenager on trial at Portsmouth hoping to secure a move.

please log in to view this image

Chelsea midfielder Pierre Ekwah-Elimby is one of two players currently on trial with Portsmouth this week.

The 19-year-old was one of two trialists who featured for the Blues’ reserves on Tuesday as a mixed team of fringe players and academy prospects earned a 2-1 win victory over Luton Town’s under-23s at Gosport.

Ekwah is more known for playing as a centre-back, but featured as a defensive midfielder next to Ben Close in the win.

But who is the trialist currently trying to impress Kenny Jackett? Here is a profile on the versatile defender:-

Pierre Ekwah-Elimby is a 19-year-old, 6ft 2in centre-back born in Paris, France, who can also play in midfield.

Ekwah is a natural centre-back who, according to Chelsea’s club website, is a ball-playing centre-back that can operate in either a back three or back four formation. The teenager has been with Chelsea since 2018 after leaving Nantes in his native France.

Ekwah first joined the academy of top-flight French side Nantes in 2017, having previously been at the academies of RC Arpajonnais, Bretigny FCS and CFF Paris. During his younger years, Ekwah has also learned his trade at the highly-esteemed Clairefontaine academy in France, who have helped develop French stars including Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka, Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud.

Nantes, who play in Ligue 1, were Ekwah’s parent club for just a year before Chelsea signed him in 2018. According to 'Transfermarkt', Chelsea paid around £1.8m to sign Ekwah.

Since arriving at Chelsea, Ekwah has played 24 times for the under-18s team and six times for the under-23s.

His career has not just seen him play for Chelsea’s youth sides. Ekwah has represented France’s under-16s on multiple occasions, including an appearance against England in April 2018. He has also trained with Chelsea’s first team in the past.

Ekwah’s current deal at Stamford Bridge is set to expire at the end of this season, so any potential move would be as a potential long-term move to develop the Clairefontaine graduate with a minimal transfer fee involved.

Who is Max Taylor? The highly-rated Manchester United defender currently on trial at Portsmouth.

please log in to view this image

Manchester United defender Max Taylor is currently on trial at Portsmouth for the duration of this week.

The 21-year-old was one of two trialists who featured for the Blues’ reserves yesterday during their 2-1 win over Luton Town’s under-23s, with Chelsea midfielder Pierre Ekwah-Elimby also on trial for the rest of the week.

Taylor has been on the books of United since 2014, but the fact he is going out on trial may suggest that he is set to leave Old Trafford this summer, with his current contract set to expire.

But who is the English defender? Here is a profile on the centre-back who has been part of a senior squad for his current parent club:-

Max Taylor is a 21-year-old, 6’ 1” centre-back born in Manchester, England. Taylor is a natural centre-back who has represented the Red Devils’ academy over 40 times across the age groups. The defender has been on the books of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side since 2014, although he is yet to make a senior appearance for the club.

At the start of the 2016/17 season, Taylor was promoted to United’s under-18s from their youth academy and was a regular for the club’s under-18s prior to signing his first professional contract in January 2018.

However, five months later, Taylor was diagnosed with testicular cancer and did not play from June 2018 until October 2019, when he made his comeback during an under-23s game against Swansea City.

Shortly after Taylor’s comeback, Solskjaer did include Taylor for a Europa League game away at Astana in Kazakhstan, where Taylor was an unused substitute. Taylor went on to make seven appearances for the club’s under-23s side last season before the season was curtailed.

This season, Taylor had played twice for United’s under-23s before joining National League North side Kidderminster Harriers on loan. However, Taylor’s spell at Kidderminster was cut short after their season was curtailed last month.

Any move for Taylor would definitely be a bid to be smart with finances and to try and develop a prospect for the future.

Teenage Trio Receive International Call - Training camps for Teggart, Manderson and Jewitt-White.
please log in to view this image

Three teenage Pompey players have been selected for international duty.

Third year scholar Eoin Teggart has received his first call-up to the Northern Ireland U21s set-up, with the winger chosen to be part of a 22-man training squad.

Academy goalkeeper Conor Manderson will also travel to Belfast to take part in a five-day training camp with Northern Ireland’s U19 squad.

And midfielder Harry Jewitt-White has been selected to be involved in a Wales U17s training camp.

Professional development phase coach Liam Daish said: “It will be a brilliant experience for all three of them.

“It’s always nice for players to have that international recognition and it’s something they should enjoy.

“I’m sure they’ll all learn from going away with their countries and we wish them the best of luck.”

Portsmouth keeper Duncan Turnbull seals loan move to Las Vegas Lights.
please log in to view this image

The 22-year-old has moved to the United Soccer League Championship side until the end of the Blues’ season as he goes in search of regular first-team football.

He is one of nine new arrivals announced by the Cashman Field side as they prepare for their 2021 campaign in the Pacific Division of the USA’s second tier.

University of Notre Dame graduate Turnbull joined the Blues last season following a successful trial, signing a one-and-a-half year deal at Fratton Park and with the club having the option of an additional 12 months.

It’s not quite clear whether Pompey will take up that option, though, with Kenny Jackett – the Blues boss who brought him to this side of the Atlantic – replaced by Danny Cowley last month.

It’s fair to say that Turnbull experienced a frustrating spell in England following his move last March – a stint not helped, of course, by coronavirus.

He was unable to secure a loan switch to the Hawks at the beginning of the 2020-21 campaign after trialling with the Westleigh Park outfit.

Meanwhile, a loan move to fellow non-league side Dulwich Hamlet failed to provide the game time the keeper desperately needed.

Turnbull did make one appearance for Pompey following his return to the club from Champion Hill.

That came in the Blues’ 5-1 Papa John’s Trophy defeat at the hands of Peterborough in January.

Yet he only played 60 minutes, with Jackett opting to field fellow youngster Taylor Seymour for the last half hour as he searched for suitable back-up to Craig MacGillivray following an injury to Alex Bass.

Neither keeper, though, was deemed suitable – leading Pompey to sign Exeter stopper Lewis Ward on loan until the end of the season.

Ward has since served regularly as McGillivray’s back-up, allowing the Blues to send out Illinois-born Turnbull on loan once again – this time in the States.

Greg Miller appointed Academy Manager by Portsmouth.

please log in to view this image

Former Barnsley Head of Coaching Greg Miller has been appointed as Portsmouth’s new Academy Manager.

The 45-year-old, who left the Tykes last August, will begin his new role tomorrow, when the club will formally announce the appointment.

Jon Slater has been Pompey's interim Academy Manager since July, when Mark Kelly moved into a new role of Player Development Manager.

At the time, Chief Executive Mark Catlin explained: “Over the past few years, the role of the Academy Manager has evolved to become a more strategic position. Mark’s strengths are his coaching, development and interaction with players and we all agree that this exciting new role is more suited to his key strengths."

Slater is now due to move back to his permanent position of Head of Education and Player Care following Miller’s arrival.

Miller was Head of Coaching and Under-23s assistant at Barnsley from December 2017 to August 2020. The Scot is highly qualified, holding both the Uefa Pro Licence and Masters in Sporting Directorship, in which he achieved a distinction.

Pompey have released two 18 year old Academy youngsters left back Harvey Rew and midfielder Charlie Bell, who are both currently on trial at West Ham. Brighton are also after Charlie Bell.

We have also released two Irish lads in winger Eoin Teggart and midfielder Gerard Storey, as well as right back Harry Kavanagh, keepers Taylor Seymour and (American) Duncan Turnbull. ..... Left back Joe Hancott has joined Bognor.

Young striker Alfie Stanley is to be offered a new contract at Fratton Park

Quite a clearout of young talent !! I hope we don't regret letting Eoin Teggart and Harvey Rew in particular depart......

PORTSMOUTH EYE SUMMER TRANSFER MOVE FOR UP AND COMING NON-LEAGUE PROSPECT
please log in to view this image

Portsmouth are said to be keen on signing Bromley teenager 18 year old Liam Vincent this summer, with the News reporting that the Fratton Park club have been keeping tabs on the left back.

The youngster has gradually progressed through the ranks at Hayes Lane and signed first team forms last September before featuring on several occasions in the National League this term.

Pompey are seemingly in the market for a new left back this summer, with Charlie Daniels set to see his current contract expire on the South Coast, leaving Lee Brown as the only recognisable player in that position of the backline.

Vincent wouldn’t be the first Bromley player to swap Hayes Lane for Fratton Park, with Louis Dennis and Reeco Hackett-Fairchild having moved to the League One club in recent years.

The teenager has featured seven times in the league for his current side and previously played against Pompey in the FA Youth Cup last year, scoring once and setting up the other goal for his teammate in a 2-1 win for Bromley.

He should be available for a relatively cheap price in comparison to more experienced options and for that reason, Danny Cowley and co could view him as the ideal player to bring in and develop further.

Squads in the Football League are getting younger and younger by the year and this is once again an important example of an EFL side putting more emphasis on acquiring the best talent around

Sources: Portsmouth, Fleetwood and Oxford race to sign former Aston Villa defender Jacob Bedeau
please log in to view this image

Portsmouth, Fleetwood Town, MK Dons and Oxford United are in the hunt to sign former Aston Villa defender Jacob Bedeau, Football Insider can reveal.

The centre-back, 21, is set to leave Scunthorpe United on a free transfer as the club can’t afford to take up the year option on him.

A source has told Football Insider his availability on a free transfer has alerted League One and Championship sides.

Bedeau joined Villa from Bury in a £900,000 deal three years ago after featuring in seven League One games as a teenager.

He only left Villa for Scunthorpe in January 2019 in search of regular first-team football and a quicker pathway to senior football.

The 21-year-old has now played over 50 times for the Iron including 44 League Two fixtures.

The London-born ace has started 32 games across all competitions this term for a team struggling towards the bottom of the fourth tier.

Scunthorpe are now vulnerable to losing one of their star defenders to a League One side.

Fleetwood Town and MK Dons will finish midtable in League One while Oxford United and Portsmouth are set to battle it out for the final play-off position.
