    Stoke City v Swansea City

    Competition - Sky Bet Championship
    Date - 3 March 2021
    Kick off - 8.15pm
    Venue - bet365 Stadium

Following their disappointing 1-3 home defeat to Nigel Pearson’s Bristol City, next up for Steve Cooper’s Swansea squad is a tough looking away trip to Stoke.

Last Saturday, Kasey Palmer scored against former club Swansea City as Nigel Pearson won his first game in the Bristol City dugout.

Andre Ayew gave Swansea a deserved lead from the spot after Palmer, who was on loan at the Welsh side earlier this season, handled in the box.

Nahki Wells swiftly levelled with a sharp finish before Palmer scored straight from a corner.

Antoine Semenyo added a late third as Swansea lost a home league game for only the second time in 2020-21.

This was a shock to the system for Steve Cooper's team, who were beaten after going in front for the first time this season.

Cooper will be hoping that Swansea’s two consecutive Saturday defeats are the end of their ‘blip’ - both Norwich and Brentford have suffered similar stumbles and recovered - as they remain handily placed with 2 games in hand over both the Canaries and the Bees.

Whilst the Swans were losing to the Robins, Ivan Toney scored his 25th Championship goal of the season as second-placed Brentford fought back to beat Stoke and move within four points of leaders Norwich.

The hosts trailed after just 27 seconds when goalkeeper David Raya inexplicably passed straight to Potters wing-back Tommy Smith, who squared for Jacob Brown to tap in.

Thomas Frank's side were lethargic in the first half, but levelled in style after the break through Vitaly Janelt's arrowed strike into the top corner from nearly 25 yards.

Stoke hit the bar with Jordan Cousins' lob, but left west London empty-handed after striker Toney slotted past Angus Gunn from Bryan Mbeumo's nod-down.

Victory for Brentford, coupled with defeats for promotion rivals Watford and Swansea, left them three points clear of third place, while 10th-placed Stoke lost ground on the play-offs.

Since their first meeting on Christmas Day 1925, the Swans and Stoke have played each other on 75 occasions, with Swansea winning 24, Stoke winning 30 and 21 draws.

Stoke did the double over the Swans last season, winning 2-0 at the bet365 Stadium:

Turning to Wednesday, whilst not strictly a ‘make or break’ match, defeat would make the race for an automatic promotion spot much, much more difficult.

Victory would make it so much brighter for the Swans, especially if Norwich were to beat Brentford in the 5.30pm kick off on Wednesday - the Swans will be taking the field in the full knowledge of the outcome of that game.

That said, Stoke will need a win to maintain their hopes of a play-off place, and I’m expecting the Potters to run out 2-1 victors. <cheers>

Thanks Taff. Its always a tough game up there. I desperately hope it's not 3 defeats in 4 games so going for a hard fought 1-1

Either a positive reaction after Saturdays debacle or a loss and I'm not sure how it'll go .Its always difficult to get anything up that cold and unforgiving backwater at the best of times ,so my necks' staying firmly inside my warm and comfortable turtle neck sweater.

Confidence must have taken a thump the last 8 days or so, and I feel we'll be on the end of another disappointing performance and defeat in this one.
Stoke to win by a goal.

Thanks Taff again ...forget last Saturdays second half debacle it was just another blip.....been to that ground many times over the years and seen us lose most and draw a few some due to inclement weather, some dodgy referee decisions and others due to poor Swans performances....back in 2001 I think super Kris O Leary got us a win on a cold wet Tuesday night against all the odds giving us a first away win in ages.....I am going to be positive and trust that clueless will be positive as well a win for us by at least one goal......

I'm thinking like you Taff. Stoke 2 Swansea 1.

Peter Crouch to score for Stoke from a long throw-in by Rory Delap.

    Great write up Taff..

Really nervous about tonight. It's never been the best away destination for us & also we've started to wobble, shipping goals galore. Hopefully, it'll be a 'mini-wobble' a la Norwich and Brentford. However, my personal reservations over our midfield could be our undoing. We were rock solid a few weeks back, with a Smith, Fulton & Grimes one, now not sure. We've signed Hourihane & initially it seemed that could increase our goal return, but I feel defensively we've been weaker for it too. Especially with Smith not in the side. Somethings got to give otherwise we could lose total confidence now & spiral. Hope not of course..

The worst thing about it too, is the rise of the knobheads up the road. Don't let the humiliation we gave them in their own backyard, be wasted now Swans...

Hope it stays that way , Norwich are out of reach now so its Brentford to chase + hopefully Wycombe will do us a favour , all the more so disappointed after the loss on the weekend .maybe Cooper content with a play off spot I do hope not

Freddie Woodman continues in goal, with Naughton lining up alongside Ben Cabango and Marc Guehi in the Swansea defence.

Connor Roberts and Manning are the wing-backs - with the Irishman starting for the first time since the win over Watford - with Smith and Fulton joining captain Matt Grimes in the middle of the park.

Andre Ayew and Jamal Lowe lead the line for the Swans.
