Worlds gone mad AFTER Dad’s Army, now the Muppets come with a woke warning. We’re told the show has “negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures”. Really? Granted, the Swedish chef spoke hurdy-gurdy gibberish and often fought his own ingredients but he still made a lot more sense than Jamie “Bosh!” Oliver. What kind of muppet gets peeved about harmless kids’ shows?
I think they are worried about offending the Green party. A spokesperson for the Green party said: "Kermit the Frog is not an accurate portrayal of our membership. While we are concerned with protecting the environment, not all frogs are green, neither are all our members frogs. The show's cast should portray a more diverse representation of our members and objectives by including toads, newts and axolotls." In response Kermit said "Never take yourself too seriously. And beware of advice from experts, pigs and members of Parliament."
As someone who has been rewatching it, that message doesn't even come up before every episode. In fact, it only comes up before a small handful of episodes. It does, however, come up before episodes with some ****ty stereotyping in certain sketches that you wouldn't get away with today. Surely having a message show up for five seconds at the start is better than just removing it completely? But of course, woke=bad now.
Edit Ah this is one A confederate flag in the back ground Really! great song Well never see a nazi in a ww2 film again then soon
From what I've seen so far, things such as depictions of Native Americans, Indians, Chinese, Latinx, Romani. I haven't got all the way through so can't comment past that. I haven't seen it yet, but I know there's an ep with Johnny Cash that has a few Confederate references in it, I imagine that one will have the message beforehand too.
Not like you Chazz to purposely be incredibly obtuse about the situation. As I said, It's a simple 5 second message before the show. They haven't removed this stuff. So petty to complain about something that doesn't affect the show whatsoever. There's nothing wrong with telling kids (who are the most likely age group to watch Muppets) that these depictions are wrong.
Just seen the article. I would say there's nothing wrong with that stance whatsoever. Storm in a teacup. We move on.
We've got Muppets complaining about the Muppets...Give them 20-30 years when more history has been erased and they'll realise that they too have been muppets!!!
Interesting as Cash was very pro Native American rights and got criticised / censored at the time for his stance https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitter_Tears:_Ballads_of_the_American_Indian
Are you saying that these days, if you say you're English, you'll be arrested and thrown in jail? When did this come in?
I thought that. Feels like someone at ABC didn't do their homework then. "Well, he's from the South, and he's deeply religous, he probably loves that flag!"
