But the lockdowns prevented deaths, or would you have been happier to let thousands more die? In the end by % it was fairly average...
That’s what I’m saying. 2020 proved to be a normal-ish year (assuming the data is correct) because it was necessary to impose drastic life-saving restrictions on people whereas Kiwi’s tweet is arguing the normal-ish number is a justification for not having lockdowns.
It's also interesting to note that flu-related deaths were massively reduced for 2020. We'll never know the exact number of deaths directly from Covid as many were 'with' rather than 'from' but do we assume the total would have been similar if Covid had never arrived? I just mention that as the 5 people I personally know to have died 'with' Covid in the past year may all have died from other causes at some point, so not totally unexpected...
if flu deaths are down due to everyone social distancing why did so many die of the thing everyone is social distancing to avoid
To all those worried/interested in the impact/interaction of vaccines on people with compromised immune systems, this is one of the topics being covered in a free webinar organised by the ZOE Covid Symptom study (Kings College) on 3 March 4 pm. I got an invitation because I report (increasingly infrequently) on the app for the study. I think if you just download the app (which gives some interesting info from an independent perspective) you’ll be able to finesse an invitation. After all, virtual meeting can have limitless attendance. Questions can be submitted in advance. I'll be joined by Prof. Ellie Barnes, Professor of Hepatology and Immunology at University of Oxford and Dr Anna Goodman, Infectious Diseases Consultant at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital London. We’ll explore the latest ZOE data from over 500,000 logged vaccines to understand how they are working in the real world. We’ll cut the data to look at efficacy and after-effects in the different vaccines and different groups. We'll unpack what this means for people with compromised immune systems, including those on immunosuppressive drugs. As always, we’ll be taking questions so please submit any questions you might have in advance via this link and we will do our best to address it. I look forward to seeing you on the 3rd. Keep safe and keep logging. Regards, Professor Tim Spector On behalf of the ZOE COVID Symptom Study team
bloody china virus cant even go dogging Police urge people not to attend 'dogging' event in Essex please log in to view this image By Ellis Whitehouse @E_Whitehouse293 Senior Reporter please log in to view this image Police have warned against anyone planning to attend a "dogging" event organised for Canvey this weekend 16 comments A “DOGGING” event is being planned on Canvey but police have insisted it is not “essential travel” and warned the public not to attend. The website “Let’s Go Dogging” has shared that there are plans for a meet up on Canvey this weekend to its 26,000 followers on social media. The site claims to organise “dogging” events - the act of watching sexual activity in a public place - in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa. It has not disclosed where the Canvey meet up would take place, but Essex Police have said any such meet up would be against Covid rules and officers would be patrolling the island this weekend. Norman Smith, leader of Castle Point Council, said no previous meet ups of this kind had been reported in the borough, and hoped it would be “stamped out”. He said: “It’s something I have never heard of as an issue in Castle Point, and during this period of time it is totally against the rules and it’s not something we would want to associate with Castle Point at all. “I am hoping that it’s the first time and that we can stop it before it starts. “I certainly hope it doesn’t gain momentum in our area, I just think of young children being out and about, it’s not something you would want them to witness.” Essex Police have urged anyone considering a social gathering on Canvey to “reconsider”. A spokesman said: “At the moment, England is in a national lockdown and only essential travel is permitted, which is limited to travel to and from work if you cannot work from home, to shop for essential items, to care for someone, to attend a medical appointment or to attend education or childcare. “We would urge anyone thinking of travelling for reasons outside of those covered, not to. “We will be patrolling sites across Canvey over the weekend as part of our regular patrols. “Covid-19 infection rates have been falling in Essex and we’d like to thank people across the county for following the government guidelines. by Taboola Remember Her in ABBA? Anyone concerned about breaches can call police on 101 or visit
Woman of 49 calling LBC this morning. She has checked French government website to find out when she will be eligible for a vaccine. Not before 2023. Her 8 year old child wears a mask all day at school, apart from eating at lunchtime. All the teachers teach wearing masks
Unbelievable, isn't it? They can't get enough Pfizer, and won't take the AZ after Macron criticized it.
This is the problem - as fantastic as our rollout is, we need the entire population of the planet vaccinated before getting back to life as it was before - variants will keep popping up and we'll require top-up doses. More fool the French if they don't want AZ, but it hinders us all.
Yeah it's criminal really, massive Vaccination centres empty and a million or more vaccines going unused.
The road map is quite considered, it has breakpoints, to see what happens when we do each of the big steps and then we can adjust, although Boris has said we will not go into lockdown again, I am not quite sure what we can do if it does go wrong. I think the BMJ should have said "Closing schools is not evidence based NOW and WILL NOW harm children", because last March I think it was evidence based, and should have happened earlier. It has now gone on for too long, and the education and mental health of our kids and society as a whole is suffering Now we do have to try and come out of it, slowly and with small steps. I would have thought it would be a good idea to vaccinate teachers before hand though. Children do transmit the virus, even if they are asymptomatic or very mild symptoms.. We will get a small spike at each relaxation of rules, but hopefully it will be small and as more and more people are vaccinated there will not be a push on NHS. We will definitely get a spike next winter, but as long as we scrutinise the variants, we will be able to boost vaccinate with that strain, and again we will be OK Yes I am in an optimistic mood
The power of words eh! There is loads scientific evidence to show that AZ is almost as good Pfzer and both are actually outstanding. The figures are something like 91 vs 95% I believe. I think they both surpass the standard flu jab considerably. When asked by people who are immunocompromised and so will not raise a good response to (any) vaccine whether they should have it, the answer is definitely yes...anything that mitigates the effect is wonderful. You might get infected but you won't die, and we now have numerous drugs and procedures that will help you get better too. I just do not understand the logic, and I think it was Col who said, this is so sad for us and the rest of the world, as it only drags the whole thing on longer, and gives us more problems with the virus mutating etc
And not helped by Angela Merkel, who is refusing the AZ vaccine because she thinks at 66, she is too old for it. Macron and Merkel have not led their people well over this.
Infections increased in 1 in 5 local authorities this week. Lots of people thinking once they've had they're jab they can start relaxing. My fear was the government was going to balls this up but it seems we are going to give them a helping hand.
