Reports in the media this morning that we’re offering to host the entire European Championships due to us been so much further ahead in the vaccine roll out.
They were interviewing Matt Hancock this morning and when asked about it said no offer to host them had been made.
Yeah lets let thousands of people into our country just when we've got on top of this virus. Bring your new variants and your different strains. ****ing madness.
Do you propose we hide forever? Just cancel the future? Just because a new variant might happen? **** that, that’s not living
So why isn't it going ahead in the other countries? UEFA, who treat us like ****s the rest of the time, are happy for us to take the risks other countries won't to bail them ou5. **** 'em. If this did go ahead and it went wrong you can bet people wouldn't be saying we can't hide, there would be hysterical shrieking about Johnson being a mass murderer, blood on his hands...
I agree it's ****e living but June/July this year is just too soon to open the borders. I'm not a fan of this govt and I think they've made some huge cockups over the last 12 months but I do believe they're making a decent fist of the vaccination program and they're trying hard not to raise expectations too high about early lifting of restrictions. Nobody wants on/off lockdowns, the govt must be as certain as they can be that this will be the last. For me the focus has to be on getting schools back safely, seeing covid-deaths tumble then gradually reopen hospitality, etc. Football can wait a bit longer imo.
Strange isn't it? In France there is a 6pm to 6am curfew and you have to have proof of why you are out, 3nforcement of which is made easier by carrying of ID being mandatory. Yet they deem it safe to have schools open whilst here it is deemed dangerous,
When the vaccine program has been fully implemented and the pressure is off the NHS, why not became the go to nation? The aim of the lockdown and vaccination program is to reduce the pressure on the NHS and stop the spread. Combined with changes in social behaviour and the high percentage of population immune to the effects of Covid, this country will be one of the safest places to host major events. Visitors may well bring in Covid, but we will be able to deal with it. I really don’t care about those people who decide that they don’t want to be vaccinated, let them catch it and suffer the consequences, it’s their choice. I think we should try a new approach once all groups have had the vaccine. Open up vaccination vacation resorts using cruise ships. Fly in tourists, bus them to a port, give them the jab and let them go on trips to shopping centres and malls to take even more money from them. Just like we used to do booze cruises, do it with vaccines. Or open up farms, come and pick our crops and get a free jab. Take German tourists on tours of the vaccine factories and let them loose in the factory outlet shop! **** me, if we do get something like the vaccine program right let’s use it to get some money back into the economy.
Strange indeed. I don't know how the French public perceives the priorities. Maybe they feel sacrificing personal liberty, bars, restaurants, sport etc is worthwhile to get schools back and to get their parents back into work?
What is strange is that French unions are bolshier than ours but their teachers are happy to have the schools open whilst ours are against it and playing politics.
Knew a Spanish lad and he could travel around Europe with his combined ID Card/Driving licence (without a passport)
Last June/July there was virtually no covid around in the general population (hospitals and care homes apart ), and it would be reasonable to think that would be the same this coming summer so add to that 30 million plus odd vaccinated, all the millions who have previously had covid, those naturally immune and were pushing near herd immunity anyway. I see no reason we shouldn't host the euros it's not likely tens of thousands of fans will be let in but there is plenty of other nationalities already living here so presuming reduced crowds are back in stadiums at least a wider amount of games will have a decent atmosphere and make for a better spectable.
6.1 per 100,000 that seems pretty low doesn't it Dennis ? https://www.hullccnews.co.uk/28/07/2020/hulls-latest-weekly-coronavirus-rate-confirmed/
I'm not saying we "hide" forever. I'm saying that until the majority of the worlds population is vaccinated then its just not worth it. Not every country is as advanced as us in the fight against the virus. Easing off just to host a sporting event is stupid. And as for cancelling the future, I'd rather we all had one instead of none at all, as 120000 plus of our own residents sadly do not.
That's Hull but what about the rest of the country? It seems fairly widely accepted that relaxing restrictions in June/July was a major factor in the peaks that followed and the subsequent November lockdown. We seem to be so close to getting on top of this is it worth taking too many risks at such a late stage, especially for a football tournament? There's risk enough in opening up hospitality etc, do we need more?
