Bristol City Top six favourites to become next Bristol City manager The top six favourites to become next Bristol City manager has been revealed according to bookmakers Sky Bet following Tuesday’s sacking. 6) Nigel Adkins Nigel Adkins has been out of a job since June 2019 after he decided against renewing his contract at Hull City, stating that his and the club’s futures were “not aligned.” In his first full season in charge, Adkins led the club from 19th to a comfortable 13th place finish in the Championship table, winning 17 of their 46 games. He has also managed Sheffield United, Reading, Southampton, Scunthorpe United, and Bangor City and had time with the latter club, Wigan Athletic and Tranmere Rovers as a player. 5) JOHN TERRY John Terry is currently number two to Dean Smith at Aston Villa and had been previously linked with jobs at Bournemouth, Watford, Bristol City and Derby County. Though it’s been confirmed that there have been no approaches for the ex-Chelsea player, according to Smith, with pundits urging Terry to get his first spell as a first team manager. 4) DANNY COWLEY Cowley was most recently was sacked by Huddersfield Town, despite beating second-place West Brom in his last game in charge, which all-but-confirmed the club’s survival. It’s understood that owner Phil Hodgkinson wanted total control over transfers — but his manager was not willing to work that way. Danny first grabbed the attention of the country when he and his brother took Lincoln City all the way to the FA Cup Quarter Finals in 2017, causing shocks against Ipswich, Brighton and Burnley along the way. The Imps finished the 2016/17 season crowned champions of the National League and then in the 2017/18 season finished 7th, claiming a playoff place in their first season back in the Football League and also won the EFL Trophy at Wembley. In the 2018/19 season, Danny and Nicky Cowley’s side finished top of the League Two table and won promotion to League One. Danny Cowley left League One high flyers Lincoln to join the Championship strugglers in September, who at the time were 23rd in the table having failed to win any of their first six matches. 3) EDDIE HOWE Eddie Howe has been linked with many clubs for the manager’s position for however long he stays unemployed. The 42-year-old guided the Cherries to more than 450 games across two spells spanning more than a decade but stepped down this summer following the club’s relegation to the Championship. Their five-year stay in the top flight ended despite a 3-1 win at Everton on the final day of the season. Howe also made more than 300 appearances as a player in the famous red and black stripes. Howe was initially appointed AFC Bournemouth caretaker manager in December 2008, with the club sitting on -17 points at the bottom of the Football League. Against all the odds he secured their safety and followed it with promotion from League Two the following season. After a brief spell in charge of Burnley, a masterstroke from owner Maxim Demin bought Howe back to Dorset, and he then proceeded to achieve two further promotions in three seasons, leading the Cherries to the Premier League, where they remained for five years. 2) ALEX NEIL Alex Neil is currently manager of Preston North End, and has been ever since he was appointed back in 2017, replacing Simon Grayson. He guided them to a 7th place finish in his first season in charge at Deepdale, however endured a tough 18/19 season, ending up in 14th, though had a more impressive season just gone, finishing 9th. He has been linked with many jobs during his reign, and was most recently favourite for the Bristol City vacancy. 1) PAUL COOK Paul Cook is currently out of work having departed from Wigan Athletic who are in administration. In August 2020, the Latic’s relegation to League One was confirmed due to the points deduction on the final day, despite a cracking run of form, subsequently saw the resignation of the manager. Cook has previously managed Portsmouth, Chesterfield, Accrington, Sligo and Southport – winning the League One title with Wigan in 2017/18, the League Two title with Pompey in 2016/17 and with Chesterfield in 2013/14. https://fanbanter.co.uk/top-six-favourites-to-become-next-bristol-city-manager/
Paul Cook for me too. His record, and also MA’s role will have to change for him to accept, if the rumours are to be believed. Hopefully the latest debacle will have convinced SL thus needs to happen. I’m not holding my breath though, it will probably be Appleton.
Paul Cook was my choice when they appointed DH. I'm not sure about Howe, I think a lot of people don't realise just how much money the Bournemouth owner pumped into the club to get them where they were, as he kept it very under the radar. JT - Would be another huge gamble, but he does have good contacts in the game, and a lot of players would probably come to City if he were manager over the others on this list. For now it's a no for me Adkins - Not in a million years Cowley - Not for me Alex Neal - Could be a good shout, but we would have to pay compo. He's done a good on at PNE on a far tighter budget than City would give him. Could he really take us to the play-offs this, or next season though??? Other names to consider Patrick Viera - We have to interview at least one BAME candidate under new FL rules, and he would be a good shout? Sol Cambell - Has done well in the lower leagues at clubs with very limited budgets, but always seems to clash with the owners, so can't see MA or SL taking a punt on him here Frank Lampard - Slightly less of a gamble than John Terry Nigel Pearson - I can see Red Robin tugging it already at the thought of him Rafa Benitez - ?? Gary Monk - Poorly treated at Sheff Weds Lucien Favre - A very left field choice, but would be good, Too expensive for SL though I suspect
My preference would be Howe but I wouldn't say no to Cook, the other 4 are poor choices IMHO. Pity mad Mick has found a new home, he would have stirred things up.
Bookies clear favourite is Cook at 5/4. Howe is getting significant backing down from 7/1 to 3/1. Worryingly Ashton's mate Appleton's odds have shrunk from 8/1 to 4/1.
**** me if this happens I think SL/Ashton can expect an explosion of abuse and negative reaction from the fanbase. If this comes true, I think it's almost certainly an F U from SL/Ashton.
I can see the slide downwards that's for sure.....if this is true, it would show that SL has no ambition for this football club whatsoever. I know in "most" peoples eyes, time was up for LJ......................... but if this is what's known as progress and moving on, then we've all been taken for mugs!!
CEO Mark Ashton gets to work and Bristol City match aftermath - Moments missed The things we spotted on and off camera at Ashton Gate Stadium last night. please log in to view this image Mark Ashton on the Ashton Gate pitch on Tuesday evening Mark Ashton wasting no time With the confirmed dismissal of Holden so abrupt, little over an hour after the final whistle blew in BS3, and following the perceived lack of backing for the then head coach by Lansdown, you get the feeling that the hierarchy at Ashton Gate were planning their next move before a ball had even been kicked on Tuesday evening. Minutes after the sacking had been confirmed, City’s CEO Mark Ashton was on the pitch conversing over the phone before he headed back down the tunnel. We are aware that he could merely have been catching up with the inlaws, discussing a Kylian Mbappe masterclass at the Camp Nou, or just explaining why he was late home, but it’s interesting nonetheless. Let’s hope Dean Holden’s predecessor doesn’t take six weeks to be appointed...
There you go again 7 months gone and all that. If you look at the 9 manager appointments under SL, I would say only GJ was greeted with mainly universal support, SC and LJ had to win the fans over and Coppell was always a non starter, you yes I think that we have been mugged off.
Have to agree. I welcomed GJ until he spent £50grand rescuing LJ (there I go again) from his 77minute league playing career at Hearts. I certainly was underwhelmed by SC's appointment but then gave us all the best season since Alan Dicks. Made even more impressive with only 3 sides to the ground and barely 10,000 watching. By the way on Points West tonight their so called sports reporter Alistair Durden couldn't name AD as the manager from our time in Division 1, says it all for me.
