True, but even in a sport with a long use of video technology, it still causes controversy and anger and accusations of bias, so what hope does football have?

Ad hominem and "who, me, not me, mate, I may have insulted you by calling you patronising but you're the one overreacting" gaslighting. Well done, you.

I was always deeply suspicious of it, but now I absolutely loathe the very idea of it. So I’ve sort of changed my mind, if that helps?

Isn't the fundamental problem is that there is an underlying belief that referess got lots wrong? Now, don't crucify me. I've used the "Ref was ****ing useless" line enough times, but I'd like to see the data if it exists. I've been at games as 'neutral' with mates who support other teams. Quite often these have been lower league games, so standard of refereeing might have been a little weak. Yet as I stood along side the baying home fans venting their fury I often realised that a) the ref was more often right than wrong and b) when he was giving fouls that led to '**** off ref' responses he was doing it for both sides.

There is an irony that we're using television to solve a problem that originated on TV. For years TV pundits have analysed matches and declared that referees got things wrong. After 78 replays of a tackle they'd declare that the award of a penalty was wrong, or whatever. In real time, the ref gave what he saw.

I'm still for VAR, but there has to be major rule changes and improvements on how accurate the technology is i.e. Not having a blurred shot of a ball when kicked for determining offsides etc.

    1. TBF I don't think there has been a major issue with offsides before var. The linesman tend to get 9 out of 10 calls correct. Whilst we have technology we may as well try and get 10 out of 10 decisions correct. The trouble is its being made too perfect and football and fans aren't ready or want these perfect decisions. It's killing the game which is why I don't think there is the harm for another look in real time that doesn't take 4 minutes to sort out.

For me it should be used to correct the obvious wrongs and cut out cheating. Var is just the technology and Iam all for moving forward but it's how the technology is interpreted and used. I hate the delays and inconsistencies on how it's being used since its introduction. It is killing the game, but I am still hopeful that some compromise can be found.

    I hate it.

    But it won’t go anywhere.

I don’t even get it. Why do they allow refs to make controversial decisions at all when there are other refs watching with slow motion replay screens. VAR is better placed to make a big decision. It would stop the refs digging in their heels to not look like they made a **** up.

Yeah I agree with OP. It’s **** and needs scrapped.

I still feel that its main failing is that it's still a matter of opinion. All it's done is move the opinion from the man in the black hopefully close to the action to someone in a shed on an allotment in Stockley Park.

Ah well, it's killed football for me, so Saints are going to be about £1,000 a year down on season tickets. If it's just me they'll not notice. Then again, a few seasons ago TV cash overtook ticket sales so perhaps it'll only be noticed when TV audiences drop. Shame.

By the way, apologies for the gross overreaction earlier in the thread. It wasn't warranted or deserved. Sorry.
