Oh, so getting back to the keepers situation.

Anyone think Fraser would have had more luck saving their winner - making himself bigger.

Macca seemed to wave it through like a bull fighter swishing past a raging bull.

Just thinking back; was it the Fulham game when Bertrand(?) crossed & it hit the defenders arm, that was apparently in a “normal” position even tho away from hid body & deemed no pen? Will someone tell me how that wasn’t a pen but Bertrands was today? I just don’t get it.

Aside from the fact that no two incidents are exactly the same, having different referees will invariably open up the possibility of different decisions being made.

For me, neither of those two incidents were penalties. But another day, they both go our way. As it is, frustratingly, not even one went our way.

Yep. Slow mo about 4 mins 15 seconds in. Someone needs to make a compilation tape and send to the Premier League to ask why we are being victimised

I am very disappointed with the result today and especially as the first half performance suggested a very good win.

I have to say that I am not putting too much stock in any of the Premier League results at the moment,. VAR is clearly a mess and has exacerbated the problems it was brought in to resolve but, more significantly, I think the absence of fans and the social distancing measures which have been introduced in training have created a degree of artificiality about football at the moment. The seasons typically throw up the occasional odd result yet 20/21 has been defined by them.

I would also have to add that I think that the only massive clanger dropped by Ralph has been letting Valery go out on loan. My guess is that this is probably due to non-footballing reasons. However, I think the recent results show that we should have kept him even of Birmingham City's results do not suggest he has made an impact. Other than that, I am not sure whether Ralph can be blamed. I agree with the sentiments that he has done well whilst also feeling a little disappointing that the performances throughout 2020 have not been repeated in 2021. Our hope have been dashed.

The comparison with Klopp is interesting but the only two managers who have had their teams performing relentlessly through the current campaign are Guardiola and Rodgers. Most of the other managers have seen erratic results with the only teams sharing the consistency with these two are those in the relegation zone where they have been rubbish. Chris Wilder, like Ralph, has been cited as a manager with promise yet Sheffield Utd seem terrible.

All in all, I am not too worried about this season. It is not particularly reflective of the true merits of any team and I just see it as an interesting distraction from Covid. We will not get relegated and the experience gleaned will serve Ralph better in 21/22. The comments about Ralph not getting the backing from the owners is nonsensical in the current circumstances as no on , regardless of their business, will see fit to invest in their business until the current pandemic is over. Saints fans need to get real and just be appreciative that there is some football available to get exercised about.

VAR is very unlikely to intervene and change a decision if it’s a handball. So whatever the ref gives, the VAR decision matches their argument.

Serious question, Tom: Are matches like this one (or any others) ever reviewed, in terms of the correctness, or otherwise of refereeing decisions? In other words, do the referees themselves, or any other group of officials, check on what decisions are actually made, and whether or not a different outcome would have been more acceptable? In short, do referees ever get the chance to review their own decisions?

Yes matches get reviewed and a referee will be assessed and will be told what decisions were deemed correct and incorrect.
