It was like watching the Eurovision votes come in - as predictable as a Wyke goal on a McGeady assist

Impeachment required a 2/3 majority vote. Effectively it required 17 Republicans to vote to impeach him, 7 did so the vote was 10 short. He was never going to be impeached EJK

It just makes a mockery of the whole thing though. All that we saw there was senators or whatever they call themselves voting for their own party. Conscience or actually doing the right thing never even got a look in. But we all knew it was going to happen. Funny thing is that democracy ‘worked’ when it went in Trumps favour.

Time to let him live out his life in obscurity as a corrupt rich old man.

    Like Bush, Blair, or Clinton.

Shocking isn't it, when people are starving or can't afford health care.

Potentially THE most undemocratic country in the free world. He lost the popular vote to Hilary Clinton by 3 million votes and still became President, He lost the popular vote by 7 million to Joe Biden and claims the election was stolen. Then in his impeachment trail he lost that by 57 votes to 43 and walks away scott free from inciting an insurrection. I used to love living in America, but dear god their politics is totally f ucked up

Unfortunately he has the funds flowing in to run in 2024, so he's going nowhere. Unless one of his many tax dodging schemes gets him arrested and jailed in the meantime.

Him running in 2024 just guarantees the republicans don't get back in. There is no chance in hell that they support his candidacy.

He might have lost the popular vote last time around, but that's just the way their system operates. It is outdated but I can't see it changing any time soon.

What truly demonstrates how much the USA is screwed by their political system is the actions of the senior Republican in Congress, Senator Mitch McConnell.

He voted against conviction, saying it was unconstitutional now that Trump was no longer president.

This despite knowing full well that there is a precident, because every respectable news outlet on the planet has been highlighting the fact that President Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War, William Belknap, resigned his office but was still subsequently impeached and tried by the Senate.

Then McConnell displayed a piece of hubris so humongous that I still can't get my head around anyone having the chutzpah to try and get away with.

    After voting to acquit Trump, McConnell comes out and says this;

"There's no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it. The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president and having that belief was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories and reckless hyperbole which the defeated president kept shouting into the largest megaphone on planet."

He then finishes off with an unbelievable attempt at moral ass covering by saying Trump hasn't got away with anything yet because he still might get prosecuted for it under the criminal justice system or by civil litigation.

It was inevitable that he would not be found guilty. There is a good reason it requires a two thirds vote, as it does for ammendments to the constitution.

But the earlier jurisdictional vote means that now, unless it is reversed, any president can be pursued when out of office.

This has always been resisted, even in 1999 when you would struggle to find many , Dem or Rep, who thought Clinton was not guilty of the charges he faced. They balked at the consequences, which will now flow down the line.

Obama and Bush have some murky stuff in the cupboard, and if Biden hangs around long enough , his complex past will likely be become enmeshed with his present. Anything can happen now, as the make up of the House and Senate is not a constant.

Trump is a man clearly unsuited to high public office, and has been replaced by another. His impeachment was bound to fail, and was principally pursued by a fanatical old woman with a score to settle.

If he loses a criminal trial for this, he cannot hold public office. I assume that that's where McConnell was going with this. That said, what a gutless piece of s hit that man is, but McConnell, Lindsay Graham, Ted Cruz Marco Rubio and Josh Hawley should all hang their heads in shame. They have single handed ripped the life out of the GOP.

I doubt that it will go to a criminal trial, but certainly the GOP is a mess, not knowing what it stands for. The Democrats are little better in my view, being in thrall to the curse of identity politics and a small number of hard left die hards.

They have a great system, but it is broken at the top. Biden, Trump, Obama , Bush. That will be twenty five years of presidents without a good one between them.

Luckily for them, the President has far less power than is commonly understood. Luckily for us too.

There is only one way they will ever get impeachment trials to work properly and that is to make the vote use a secret ballot.
