Our work rate was good, but without doubt we were outclassed in the final third. The stats spoke for themselves at one stage, when it showed Gillingham 15 shots and 0 goals, and Lincoln had 7 shots and 3 goals. We failed to amend our shortfall of a clinical striker, that I've banged on about all season, thus it will see us finish as a midtable team. When Akinde came on he made an immediate impact, but his ball hit the crossbar. But that was our night in summary, so close, yet so far. I never felt the Lincoln keeper was ever under any real pressure and always seemed confident with whatever came towards him. My top three, I honestly can't decide. If we judge it on workrate, it would be the whole team, if it was done on clinical ability it would be no one for this game. That's no disrespect to our lads, it was just the gulf between us. Lincoln, best team I've seen this season. In other games, that display would win us games against weaker opposition.
Ingenious... Incompetent...Imploded... Individuals.... Insipid... Ineffective... Incensed.... Infantile...Immature... Ignominy... Inconsistent.... Infuriated ! .. Insane !........ and some of that was just me ! Despite 0-1 at half time, I thought Gills had done reasonably well. Lincoln's first goal was ingeniously created by a back-heel that sent the incompetent Jackson into a trance ! He had a(nother) poor game - regardless of the penalty - which he was so desperate to concede - that he had two 'goes' at fouling the Lincoln man....... What does he have to do wrong before he will be substituted ? ---I was left incredulous at the decision to take off Dempsey and Lee, both of whom had worked 100 times harder than Jackson...... but by the time of their substitutions, our infantile manager had heaped more ignominy on the club with his immature behaviour ---- although I did have some sympathy when he was shown the yellow card ------ this was partly Jackson's fault ! ( how ? I hear you ask. ) - - - - I think Evans must have finally disenchanted the 4th Official (( not that Trevor Kettle needs to be encouraged to infuriate Gills ), when he probably complained of an offside claim ( 81 mins ), during a Lincoln attack - in which Jackson spent all his time with a hand raised - instead of trying to cover the forward behind him - who really should have passed, rather than shot ( another forward would have had a simple tap-in. ) -----If Jackson wasn't so incompetent as a right back, Evans might not have needed to open his gob. At half time, Gills could be considered to have been a little unlucky --- so - what happened in the 2nd half ? Gills imploded ! They stopped playing as a team after the penalty was conceded... After this, we had 11 mainly hopeless individuals. O'Gilvie's injury didn't help... He should have been taken off. He was very poor for the rest of the game - his head was probably 'messed up!'.... I wasn't impressed with Tucker - especially at his negativity. On a few occasions - when Gills had a corner, the ball would be played to him ( on the half-way line ) - Jack chose to play back to Bonham, rather than recycle the ball forward whilst Gills had players in the Lincoln penalty area........ ..... but I suppose Tucker wasn't confident that our insipid and ineffective strikers would profit from any service ! -- and I was almost able to lip-read Graham's four letter expletives ( towards the end of the game ) - when yet another decent cross he made was wasted by our forwards -- but -- I'm not so sure that Oliver was on the pitch to play a game of football - rather than to try to conduct some personal vendetta against his old Lincoln teammates .... I too thought his yellow card could have easily have been red ! - and he was lucky in the 2nd half - he appeared to be a little careless with some challenges which would normally have attracted a booking --- including the ( not-so ) subtle shoulder 'barge' to obstruct a Lincoln player --- but by that time, I believe that Evans was doing a good job of distracting the referee. Maybe I'm getting too intolerant of the inconsistency of The Gills - but - I can accept that we will have performances that will frustrate me - what I can't accept is the unprofessional way in which the players seemed to implode after the Lincoln penalty. We seemed to just surrender, I don't mind losing to a better team. I accept that Lincoln can play good football - but so did Gills up to the penalty incident -- they then 'gave up!' -- perhaps I should do the same - before I go insane. As for my 1,2,3.... 1. Graham --- for his sake he needs to find a better team in the summer ( and, he WILL ) 2. Dempsey --- worked very hard ( and didn't stick his hand up once ! ) 3. Lee ..... also worked hard ( especially off the ball in the first half ) 4. Dempsey & Lee - after they had been substituted ( compared with Bamby Jackson ) 5. Evans' gob ( moved quicker than 'Bamby.' ) 6. Jackson's post match shower gel - still moving faster than him !
Well I waded through that. Some good points, that I agree with. Jackson, I noticed on two ocassions in the lead up to their first goal, Jackson did not track back, or appeared to do so lethargically or is it part of tactics, that he knows his position will be covered by a CB. How would this help?...maybe on a counter attack. I don't know the answer because I don't know what they've been told to do. It's worth noting, I felt Jackson was out of position also for the first Sunderland goal initially....whilst on the topic of Sunderland... I eventually had chance to watch the first Sunderland goal back, not just the highlights. The original problem of the Sunderland first goal actually materialised on the opposite wing, when Jack was caught out by a ball sent down the wing, he actually had two attempts at dealing with it, without great effect. I think sometimes we look at the brief moments around the goal, rather than analyse why the situation came about. From the above two examples, it demonstrates we have a problem in defence, as well has once again, our failure to score. I'm not sure what game some people are watching, but it is certainly not the same game as me. Positives, I feel we are entertaining to watch. I can't decide if that is because it's from the comfort of my sofa, rather than freezing my.....off. The lads worked hard, don't get me wrong, they really did, but as I said above, we fail to be clinical....I wonder why? Anyway, here it is... 1. Dempsey, he was getting a hard time from Eyoma and dealt with it well. By that i mean Dempsey was made to graft for position. 2. Graham, dominant as ever, sadly not everything went his way, but Lincoln were good, really good! 3. Oliver...he beat them up a bit, sometimes you need to do that. I still swear he'd make a better defender, where he can mix up. 4. Akinde....for the first 5 mins of coming on. I didn't forget Lee, but maybe next time. Bonham, let in three goals. Edit: Actually Bonham let in four goals, it was never offside.
