Just realised the rate in Hull is still over the rate that Leicester was when they were the first area locked down (145 I think) Not sure the numbers are comparable because there was less testing in Leicester at the time I assume? Anyway...no pub yet
UK's R number between 0.7 and 1.0, according to latest estimate. Research shows the Oxford/AstraZenica vaccine has 'similar effect' against Kent variant. Over 20% of the UK population have now been vaccinated.
Could this be a real gamechanger ....... vaccines AND now an actual cure? .... https://www.msn.com/en-gb/health/me...ients-fully-recover/ar-BB1dqCeh?ocid=msedgntp
Listening to the radio today and a bloke complained that he has had the vaccine so he should be able to visit his wife in a care home. No one pulled him up to tell him that it doesn’t mean he can’t have the virus and give it to others.
All this good news could easily backfire, more people could just give up on regulations because 'it'll all be over soon'.
Israel, which leads the world in vaccinating its population against the coronavirus, has produced some encouraging news: Early results show a significant drop in infection after just one shot of a two-dose vaccine, and better than expected results after both doses. Public health experts caution that the data, based on the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, is preliminary and has not been subjected to clinical trials. Even so, Dr. Anat Ekka Zohar, vice president of Maccabi Health Services, one of the Israeli health maintenance organizations that released the data, called it “very encouraging.” In the first early report, Clalit, Israel’s largest health fund, compared 200,000 people aged 60 or over who received a first dose of the vaccine to a matched group of 200,000 who had not been vaccinated yet. It said that 14 to 18 days after their shots, the partially vaccinated patients were 33 percent less likely to be infected. At about the same time, Maccabi’s research arm said it had found an even larger drop in infections after just one dose: a decrease of about 60 percent, 13 to 21 days after the first shot, in the first 430,000 people to receive it. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/25/world/middleeast/israels-vaccine-data.html
Had some good news. I think it was this thread mid last year I said my daughter left a good job in London for a new one in Manchester, but Covid hit after she’d handed her notice in, but before she’d started the new job and as a result lost both jobs. Fair play the second company did take her on doing freelance as soon as they could, which is good but not that helpful for mortgages etc. Anyway they’ve now offered her a permanent contract, which is great news. They clearly like her work because it seems like the longest interview ever to me! Plus she is a fashion designer so I was worried with all the high street closures she’d struggle. Bit selfish but a small good news story in amongst the bad news of companies affected by Covid. Fingers crossed things are starting to look more certain for companies to plan ahead and others on here benefit too.
Yeah definitely a relief. She’s always been very self reliant, and far happier moving jobs than I’ve ever been, but in the current situation I didn’t know how it would work out. To be fair she also set up some other self employed work doing totally different things too to spread the risk a bit. Thanks
I smiled when I read this Den. Self reliance is a great and positive way to develop a career. Take employed positions when they are there keep as many irons in the fire. My advice to her is to never get desperate. Always have an alternative to hand. Building networks is the hardest bit, but they should be natural and not forced.
Cheers She has three entirely different things on the go. One employed (now) one self employed as a sole trader & one self employed/employed through a franchise depending on workload. She’s never been as concerned as I have been, and wasn’t before when she got laid off in London many years ago. That time she just stayed with a friend but was confident she’d get another job and she did within weeks. She does have very good networks as you say
I didn’t know they sold large bottles of champagne - Christ they’ve gone upmarket!! Not how I remember it all.......
