Just thinking about the impending takeover and wondering what the club will do to address the years of mismanagement throughout the club. LJ has already said things like clocks not having batteries in was common place and the set up was unprofessional. Then it struck me that the spotlights at the four corners of the roof haven’t been on for years. They looked smart and were really iconic. Was there ever an official reason for them falling into obscurity and would people like to see them back?
I'd love to see them back on. Apparently planes flying into Newcastle Airport used them as a navigation aid! But I can't remember them being on for over 10 years, no idea why they were switched off.
I think it would be excellent if they could be swiched on again for night matches. A real tangible signal of a new era once the takeover is complete. I doubt it would happen but it would be class
They were fantastic when the SoL first opened. Are they still there? I'm sure I read somewhere they were taken down. I know they weren't cheap to run. Donald probably sold them to Gotham City.
Aye, I thought they cost a bit to run. Bit that was a good few years ago when they were turned off. Nowt to do with Donald tbf.
It was long before Donald and probably even before Ellis Short. I wonder if there’s a a more cost effective, green, modern version that could be installed.
I live about 3 mile away from the SoL and when those lights were on (after a win) it was very impressive tbf. A good idea by Bob Murray, it just needs updating a bit. I've seen penshaw monument, the northern spire bridge, beacon of light all have lighting to honor certain things recently so the SoL should be up there with those landmarks.
How good would it be to get a black cat version of this for the first home game with crowds allowed in.
I've never understood why the roofs of new stadiums don't incorporate solar panels where they're not seen. The new one in Nice would've been ideal with its design and the amount of direct sunshine.
I used to live in South Hetton, Co Durham - about 10 miles from the SOL and when it was cloudy you could see the lights reflecting off the cloud cover. One night I was having a drink in the cricket club and an old guy came bursting in thinking they were UFO’s!!
The Stadium is 24 years old this year and it's funny how folk have different memories of stuff. From my recollection, the lights only lasted a few years and even then they were turned off at certain time. I'm sure the lights were something to do with Northern electric sponsoring them. They were on for about an hour during the summer nights. On a bit longer during the winter then just off. We weren't using them when Quinn came in for sure and a few year before that they were never on. I bet out of the 24 year, they were used for about 3 year then the novelty wore off. They should be used on match days though. Evening kick offs and when it's dark at full time.
Even just put them on after a win a bit the logo on the side of the old echo building in pennywell used to make ya feel good after a win to see the football man taking his hat off
What a great idea, although some of our more timid players can't cope with a crowd at home games, imagine the what the threat of being thrown into a den of black pussie's would do to them. Perhaps I should have worded that differently.
