    1For.
There is no doubt there will be an impact with other illnesses.
Our daughter sadly falls in this category.
Her consultants tell her the quicker we all get vaccinated the sooner their work can continue.
They know there is no easy answer but they can't emphasise enough how vitally important it is to have the jab.
There, you have your 'response' from a family dealing with cancer.

Bet that's on the BBC RP, those few minutes filmed won't show anything else other than what they want you to see......adds to the fear factor for the likes!!
I've heard through different sources that most of the wards are very quiet.....but they won't tell you that.

I'm really happy for you, getting your vaccine, (it won't be the last) it will give you & your family personal peace of mind.
Your view & others I respect, it's really difficult not to be alarmed by what is being fed by the media and such like, most would..
My decision is, that this ain't going away anytime soon.....more variants, more vaccines, many measures that are enforced remaining the same for months if not longer to come... Travelling, very unlikely this year..

    Science. v .Politics = Politics

I'm quite happy being on top of the hill watching it all go on...........I'm not going anywhere, but nor is anyone else!!

I'm sorry to hear that RP, I know a few too and family in the same position......but I don't agree with the thought process of that consultant what so ever.....
The vaccine at this stage is not a cure, this could go on for years, of which many don't have....
My family is renowned for Cancer & lost plenty to it, I know if I get it, the least of my worries would be worrying about one virus....when you immune system is low, you are wide open to every virus and bacteria that's around causing pneumonia ...the longer it's left, the less likely for survival..that's how it is.
Not all consultants are good mate....in fact through experience, only a few are,,,,,,,It took 5, four being useless but the last one being very experienced (much older) to diagnose my daughter having a life threatening burst appendix, which needed operating on instantly.....thank god for him !!

I'm quite intrigued really! I totally agree with what you're saying in the above comment, especially about the stats (I've said before on here about my loathing for stats!!) but surely we are in a situation where we have to prioritise what could be considered the "clear and present danger" of Coronavirus.

Are you an advocate of simply opening up everything and trying to get back to normal to see what happens with covid!! If that is the case, and you believe that it is simply another version of "flu", then you must believe that the whole of the NHS is complicit in the deceit being perpetrated on the population.

The NHS is run, mainly funded and directed by the government.....They are told to comply with instructions given....most of the staff, doctors, nurses consultants just do their jobs......same as our soldiers, they are told to do the job required without asking questions regarding the detail.....they would not know (and if they did, be allowed to express) any deceit that would be perpetrated to the population.. I do know quite a few people working in the NHS....and I'd say most, don't agree with the measures, stats or scaremongering portrayed by the mass and main stream media, but would not voice that within the organisation in fear of repercussions within..
We now have most of the population sucked into what should be called FEARGATE!!

    Hey @oneforthebristolcity. I come in peace, I promise. :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Interested to hear your response to Reliant Robin's question, but also wanted to share some of the experiences of the people that I know working in the NHS, in contrast to the end of your post just there. I've mentioned before about my own Mum working at Southmead, and while she hasn't experienced anything quite as bad as has been in the press, they've definitely felt the pinch. Constantly overworked, not enough staff, plenty of whom are off with the illness themselves.

London was probably the worst affected over Christmas, and my friend who's an army nurse was drafted over there as they couldn't cope. Unused floors of their hospital have been emptied and then filled with beds, purely to address the rise in numbers of those getting it severely. Interestingly until recently they were seeing more severe cases in the 30's age group, which is pretty unusual.

I know they are just 2 anecdotes that I can provide but they do tie in with the numbers. You predicted back in October that excess deaths (sorry I know!) might go down over the winter. Instead they went up even more. And to be fair, you do have a point to some degree when you question whether people died of covid, or with covid, but to some extent does it really matter? Firstly, excess deaths go against that argument, and secondly, don't you think it's a bit wrong if we say a death is 'okay' just because they might have died anyway a year or 2 later? At what point do we stop considering a death 'okay' because they probably would have died soon anyway?

I'm interested to know your endgame as per the post above really. What should we do? Free reign? Keep locking down? Open Ashton Gate but close the Mem? <laugh>

I can add a further anecdote to this discussion, I have a relative who is an intensive care nurse at the BRI.

A big part of the problem is when a patient in a non covid ward becomes infected with the virus, that ward is then declared a 'dirty ward' and is unusable for anything until a huge/expensive deep clean is carried out, that can take the ward out of commission for weeks.

    We are in peace brother!!
Don't want to get in the argument regarding excess deaths, as we have done it to death (punned!!, but per population percentages, we have had worse years..but you could say that's down to the measures in place.....but those measures may well contribute to more deaths in the future, i.e suicides, alcohol related and of course other life threatening illnesses such as cancer & chronic heart conditions ....but these are unlikely to be shown by main stream, cus that's the way it works....now it's all about the virus!!

Also, I've read, (can't remember where now, but could probably find it) that a lot of these tests are not very accurate, specific for Covid 19 or Coronavirus....most not conclusive, but that's another subject, although important knowing if the death was with Covid and if should be part of the stats.

Answer to your question.....Defo close the mem...full of nasty things there!!

I have a long answer to the question, but the short one is.....The country can not go on indefinitely with lockdowns, if we do, then the virus will be insignificant compared to the damage it will do to the general population as a whole...
We have closed schools, but I've seen loads of children mixing in parks etc (top spreaders)....so that must be for the benefit of teachers and it's unions!! as unconcerned about the spread of the virus?? it's mad. Even walking the dog, I've noticed that the social distancing is out the window compared to 1st lockdown and that's just what I've witnessed on my outings!!
Children under 16 will not get vaccinated, so with that theory the virus won't go away..
The so say vaccines are not 100% and not proven of transmission after.....(I don't believe what their saying about the Astra-zenica, which their pushing as it's easier to store) !!
Peace of mind says to me....vaccinate the ageing & vulnerable. whom will be as safe as we are able. We then need to open back up businesses and get kids back to school. IMO we do not have to wait for the rest of society to be vaccinated, so long as the vulnerable are continuously dosed up.
The majority of people that are healthy & fit will have none or little effects from the virus and will develop antibodies and will become immune.
It won't long, when those with businesses etc will start ignoring the rules set and opening back up as a pact (as some parts of Italy)..We are becoming to easily controlled....

I bet you think it is as simple as making a bottled drink ………………
fill vat with 99.7% water … add sugar/sweetner… add flavouring …. add preservative …. " add magic ingriedient" . stir for 10 mins bottle and stick on label pack in required size boxes put on pallet send to warehouse!!!!!
pzifer vaccine is complicated and surrounding costs is reflective.. they do sell "at cost" but that's not the ingriedients" its everything to get to customer …..
Oxford is simpler so reflects the price ps shares in Pzifer haven't exactly gone through the roof! when a company gets a product that works the shares reflect that I have 3 not pzifer, one chugging along goes up and down over a year about 20% spread another one cost 62p per share now 24p, the other had longest was 30p -70p a few years back, consolidated shares since,[ so equivalent to about £1.20p a share ] now after 1 product or 2, was successful is £10 + a share [ in last 3 years they have maxed at £11 ( 4 times) and bottomed at £6 ]
ps have taken £4k out of them sold re bought 9 times ….. twice sold and bought taking the profit [ £1.2k & £1.1k ]

my examples are not covid related and does not state vaccine <doh><doh><doh> it is amazing how many peeps do not actually read and digest ……
there are hundreds of bio medical companies in the UK some small with funding / turnover less than £2m .. majority around £10 -15m … half a dozen or so £30m -50m very few, if any make vacccines as research never pays dividends should they develop one …
why did companies get funding [ UK £m's up front ] to develop this ? because we couldn't wait 10 years … and resources had to be expanded [ R & D ] to accelerate the magic!

It would never show profits via the vaccine as that would be unethical.....but don't worry, companies such as pfizer make such profits for a reason :emoticon-0105-wink:

Today I’ve woken up to the news that Covid has taken 2 of my friends now. We’ve been friends for ages, but really bonded over lock down as we both worked through it. He was a proud Scott’s man who would of been bouncing last night with the rugby and our group chat would of been red hot with his banter towards the English. We called each other our Celtic brothers.
The national numbers have now become 2 names for me.

After reading this, I believe we are a long way away from normal life how we knew it..
    https://www.bbc.com/future/article/...d-people-may-still-be-able-to-spread-covid-19

But also Interesting, more often than not the language the media uses to the mass......It's usually displayed as Coronavirus vaccine but a Covid 19 jab.....I believe the virus itself is still an unknown quantity... elimination of the virus is further away than we are led to believe.....hence, as said before, we need to learn to deal with it as much as possible but at the same time continue life as before.
It's still unknown, if the reduced infection rates are anything to do with vaccines given or the measures and lockdown imposed.
We need to jab up the elderly & vulnerable and crack on.
I understand it's likely to happen that our passports etc will need to show vaccination records.....which IMO it is a total farce, being the most likely spreaders (under 16) are exempt and will be mixing as before...
I've already resigned to the fact that travelling abroad this year, is likely to be more trouble than pleasure and will continue to take my chances without the Jab!!

    1For
Boris is anti a Covid passport.
Might be more of a problem if the country you visit requires vaccine proof.

Just out of interest how many dying a day is acceptable? It’s the lockdown that is reducing these figures. Remove the lock down and it won’t be long till those figures start increasing again.
The vaccine won’t start making a big difference until it’s been administered twice and includes the ones that will travel more frequent. So I would say we won’t see that benefit until the 50’s are done.
