Looking at the times of the race compared to others on the card I think it was equal parts good ride and awful judgement in behind.
Did you know the full story Mall. The race starts at the 2f but the winner cocked his jaw and ran on all the way to the straight mile start. Delayed the off time by five minutes getting him back to post. Leonna Mayor had tipped him before the race and her comment was "got no bloody chance now".
DOH!!! Yes I did Stick, thanks for adding, dont know why I didnt add that to the post. I have always wondered why a slow trot to the start is thought enough to warm a horse up to race. Maybe something in that.
