Ok it's not a pen by the wording of the law. In this case I think it should be a pen but I think we're seeing another example of where the wording of the law is not suitable for VAR.

 

Tom's right on this one. Deflections on to the arm are not handballs under the "clarified" handball rule.

 

That decision is indefensible. I dont care if its "the rules" or not ... its utter bollocks.

Isn't that the entire point of why it's a complete waste of time? Same people making the decisions, we get some right and some wrong just like we always did.

it wasn’t a deflection on to the arm. It was a deflection that the defender then saved with a movement of his hand. World class save.

 

Absolutely. The logic is that it'd be nigh-on impossible to intentionally position your hand such that the ball caroms off another body part and on to the hand, though. And that's probably true here: I doubt Matty Cash has enough of a background in trigonometry to play the carom. His hand was likely out because he was stretching to get his leg in the way.

It wasn't, though. The arm was already out before the ball hit his thigh. Matty Cash cannot move at the speed of light, and consequently didn't have the time to get his arm in the way in the fraction of a second after the ball hit him.
