Rules are rules. Nothing to do with VAR.

If you say so Tom. A goal being disallowed for something happening in the other half which is debatable is nothing to do with VAR is it?

Under the previous rule (before this season), that's a clear disallow.

But it's less clear for me under the current rules. Has that been ruled out for deliberate handball (which can still happen at any point in the build up to a goal), or has that been ruled out for not being able to score when the ball touches the hand of an attacker (which should now only happen immediately before the goal)?

The former, I think is highly debatable whether that was deliberate. The latter is too far removed from Salah scoring, to be considered "immediately before" in my view.

Isn't there something about the ball deflecting off an opponent from close range meaning it's not handball? Can't remember exact wording.

Think it looked far worse in slow mo than real time and not sure there's much he could have done to get out way.

Ok I worded it badly. It's more to do with the handball law than any controversy surrounding VAR.

VAR made the decision after another 90 second wait for something which would have barely got a second look in the pre var days. It's everything to do with VAR.

There is wording to that effect within the rules. But ultimately, if the handball is deliberate, then such a deflection beforehand doesn't matter. (Otherwise it would be a free-for-all, of people handling the ball which has deflected off an opponent close by.)

I'm just not absolutely convinced it was deliberate. Is there any argument that it was? Yes. Is it clear cut enough that VAR should be recommending Atkinson check the monitor? Not for me.

Fair point on the first bit, I'm confusing the two there.

Tend to agree with the second too, don't think you can say it was definitely deliberate. As I say, I think the slow motion made it look far worse than it was.

... and why the need to have the circus of the referee checking the monitor. I just don’t see the need for the that. It doesn’t matter at that point. A referee is a referee and if two of them sat in a studio watching a replay quickly see an obvious error, just tell the on field referee and get on with the game.

I don’t get the bollox of the decision having to be made by the on field referee. If the chaos in the studio aren’t sure (quickly, 10 seconds), move on and stick with original decision.

It really isn’t difficult. I was a supporter of bringing VAR in but a season and a half later, I still don’t like what they’re doing with it.
