The EU stance is because AstraZeneca have told them there will be a delay in supplying the agreed contract due to "manufacturing problems" and i assume that therefore they are trying to keep the vaccine manufactured in their territory to make up some of the shortfall though it sounds a seriously dumb move to me as it could lead to all sorts of attempts to keep vaccines / materials in the territories it is produced in .

I'm probably looking at me more from the perspective of Spain, Germany, Itay, France....should we help them, I don't see a reason why it shouldn't be considered.

I think something similar happened in Germany with PPE, when all this first kicked off back in March last year. I saw something that suggested Germany were hoarding it for their own health care originally. That was until someone reminded them of the EU rules, agreement, whatever.

I guess something similar is now going to happen with vaccine, where countries will look after their own first.

I just hope this don't now boil into some silly argument between countries. But hey ham sandwiches, this is the mentality being dealt with, if there was ever any truth in those ridiculous stories. The problem is with the media it's very good at shhite stirring.

Germans have already broken ranks and bought / ordered vaccine separate from the EU procurement .
    I'll try and find a link .

Fair enough. I don't know, I've not followed it that closely. I think our priority has to be over 70's & 80's and people in health care who deal with patients or work in care homes. Next up should be the vulnerable, I don't actually know what falls into that category. I've heard some arguments for the police and teachers....I just leave those in charge to deal with it, and will wait my turn, whenever that maybe. I just know I'm not going anywhere near a hospital until i've had it.

I suppose the Germans could argue, they placed an order for a certain amount of doses, in surplus to what the EU commissioned. As I believe in Independence, I'd have to agree those two things are two seperate entitities.

I've seen enough of what is going on in hospitals to give them a wide berth. I don't know if you saw SKY News in the North London hospitals, so sad.

Where they interviewed some of the patients. One guy who didn't believe in the virus originally. Then another guy who said he was missing his wife and he hadn't see her for a couple of weeks....he never made it, poor sod :(

They showed the hospital mortuary just to hit the message home.

Images of full hospitals seem to be needed. Increases in daily death rates of 1500-1800.....just dont seem to drive the message home with many and the fallback position is ...well cummings etc.

The vast majority have followed the rules, it's unfortunate that the ones who have been slack with them are not helping the R rate come down and it wont be anytime soon.

One of my team lost her dad on Saturday evening. Her mum, her and the old man picked up the virus over the Christmas period. Her symptoms were no more than cold like, her mum worse and the old man the same (both in their 70s)... her mum got better quite quickly but he got taken into hospital last week. Spoke to her on Friday and she thought he might be picking up. Rapid decline on Saturday and he passed away Saturday evening. She's in bits and her mum is inconsolable, irrationally blaming herself for having given it to him.

you can easily contact this even when staying within the rules particularly with the new variant . I think it is too easy to assume that just because someone contracts the virus they somehow broke the rules .

It’s a dumb and hollow threat from the EU, as the agreements AstraZeneca have had with all nations has been on a ‘best effort’ basis. One of the things the U.K. has actually got right during this pandemic was spec ordering millions of vaccines at the very outset, so it’s a bit of first come, first served job. As the main EU order came in months later, which in itself was ****ing idiotic as they’re supplying the thing at cost plus transportation costs ffs, so there’s no economy of scale.

Indeed. Hard to forget the scenes of crowded shops and high streets in late December, and the inevitable mixing over Christmas. Yet still I’m reading daily the same talking heads denying that lockdowns work and we should all just crack on whilst somehow protecting the vulnerable. I read yesterday that over half of the National ICU beds are now being occupied by under 65’s, with a large proportion of that number being 50-60.
