All of the health workers and care homes have already been vaccinated in the state in which I live. A webpage was posted online on Monday so that people can now preregister for the vaccination and then they will be notified about an appointment in the near future (based on priority groups).
The care homes were the first on the list here, with those who work in them and those who visit the housebound. They are onto the over 70's now, and you can arrange an appointment on line. There are centres around the department, but I only looked at the nearest one to home.
I agree with your first sentence Luther - this would be human nature rather than eugenics. Eugenics would be seen as an attempt to improve the genetic quality of a human population - entailing ideas of inherent inferiority or superiority. It often hangs together with ideas of scientific racism or white (or black) superiority. On this level I fail to see his remarks as being that - rather just a case of saying that an 80 year old with cancer has few years to live compared to a young teenager who has not yet really lived his/her life. Strangely enough many 80-90 year olds would agree with this. On a completely different level this Sumption chap obviously does agree with eugenics - not because of his remarks here but because he uses the title of 'Lord'. Our entire aristocracy is based around the idea of eugenics - blood lines, marriage prohibitions and all that stuff (and any royalist automatically has leanings in that direction). Isn't the whole of free market capitalism based on some screwed up idea of Darwinist eugenics - survival of the fittest and all that ? The idea that some people are more worthy of life than others is entrenched into our present economic system. Its also entrenched into all military activity because you cannot encourage men to fight by telling them the truth ie. that those people over there are the same as you - you have to demonize them first.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...e-dose-in-israel-less-effective-than-we-hoped The manufacturer said that two doses were required. Netanyahu is going round telling everyone how well he has done. Seems rather familiar to what is happening in the UK.
Scaremongering from Israel regarding the first dose of the vaccine given out ? Cannot say I have heard stories of people getting seriously ill after the jab and I and sure we would have done if so. Of course restrictions will still have to be in place but they hopefully will be at less risk of this virus in its most serious form https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/coronavirus/analysis-shows-one-vaccine-dose-leaves-uk-s-over-60s-seriously-vulnerable/ar-BB1cTT3o?ocid=msedgdhp
On this point alone, I was listening to a professor of immunology from UCL, and a very reasonable and down to earth chap he seemed too, and he said he believed the vaccines were very likely able to deal with new variants due to their similarity to the original. Not picking you up on anything, just trying to share something I heard that was positive.
Yes, save the wolf from the fire rather than Farage... Whereabouts on the moral spectrum would I be if I tripped Farage when he’s trying to escape the fire? Just asking.
Without wishing to drag up old Brexit arguments, watching a recent fishing documentary where the fishermen all voted for Brexit solely because they thought it advantageous to their industry (forgetting any other industries or effects), I found it difficult to have sympathy given their narrow mindset had now bitten them on the arse. And yes, I said solely.
Fair comment really. While I think they are mostly idiots, I do have some sympathies for them - the reality is that they do the hard work, but they are just pawns (or should that be prawns) in a rich man's game. The fishing industry is just a plaything for rich middlemen who own the quotas and make money hand over fist simply by leasing out shares of those quotas to the guys who do the work. In Scotland the bulk of those quotas are owned by five families, all very wealthy families - such as the Woods. Ian Wood is a billionaire who made his fortune in the oil & gas industry, and am pretty sure he now lives outside of the UK. I think the situation in England is much the same - around 80% of the quotas there are owned by four of the top five names on the UK rich list and a couple of Danish & German multinational companies. It's funny that the industry has been seen as so important by UK politicians - the bulk of the proceeds from it end up overseas rather than here. I'm tempted to speculate that there's some sort of connection...
Seafood exporters hit by Brexit red tape and delays will be able to claim up to £100,000 in compensation, the government has said. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed that it was putting in place a £23m compensation package for firms exporting fish and shellfish to the EU that can show they have suffered “genuine loss”. They say this is to help cover losses since the 1st January, but it doesn't fix the problem that they have created. Are they going to hand this out every month into the future?
That's just a token gesture really - it won't cover losses. One West Coast firm in Scotland had one lorry load spoil at a cost of £40k, and that's a weekly delivery - or was. Most have given up fishing for the time being, and the government know this.
The Tories have repeatedly told every one of us that they will not privatise the NHS. Here's what they did today - "ripped out an amendment to the government's trade bill to prevent the NHS being sold off or undermined by the government's trade deals with other countries." Bunch of liars... https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/nhs-trade-deal-protections-sell-off-b1789867.html
"I have haulage companies haemorrhaging £100,000 a week. They’re entering the fourth week of non trade. I have a haulage company contacted me this morning have laid off people and told part time staff to stay at home. A lot of these companies will not be left standing by the end of these this month. They’re laying people off today. The company can’t wait for three months to see how bad this is. It has been an unmitigated disaster” DUP MP Ian Paisley. The government is to announce new Brexit guidance within the “next day or two” to try and end food shortages in supermarkets in Northern Ireland. "One of the big problems has been delays to clearance for trucks arriving into Northern Ireland without the correct paperwork for each load." Northern Ireland secretary Brandon Lewis. Perhaps Brandon Lewis needs reminding that Johnson said that traders could throw all of the paperwork in the bin. It would not be needed.

Interesting article here which emphasizes that the 'free market' is the system least able to cope with crises of this kind. https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2020/4/8/the-free-market-will-only-deepen-the-coronavirus-crisis
You're so right. I dread the the day when we all become telepathic and won't be able to turn them off...
