Good Morning. It's Wednesday 20th January, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road.

    Will Leeds bag bargain winger?

The Daily Mirror are reporting that Leeds are winning the race to sign Demarai Gray from Leicester.

The 24yo has just six months left on his contract, and is available for 1.8m.

The former England U21 International is reportedly taking home £55,000 aweek, which would make the pacy winger one of the best paid players at Elland Road.

He has fallen down the pecking order at at Walkers Stadium this term, only bagging 18 minutes of game time.

Obviously 1.8m would be a bargain, but do Leeds really need another winger?

Gray, allowed to leave Leicester City for the bargain figure of just £1.8million this month after he entered the final six months of his Foxes contract – and Leeds fans have reacted, after recently being linked.

Leeds face competition from Sheffield United, Southampton and West Brom.

Give the players a good shake, and a little slap to get best out of them - Whelan

Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan believes the players at Elland Road lack leaders that are willing to shake things up to get the best out of the players.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds, following their defeat against the Seagulls, Whelan said: "I think we’ve got a group of nice football players and I’m sure they get on really, really well

"But when push comes to shove and you’re going through a bad period you need a David Batty, a Gary McAllister, you need a Gordon Strachan out there that’s going to grab you by the throat in the changing room, shake you a little bit, give you a little slap and demand more from you as a team.

"We haven’t got that and sometimes we just allow it to happen and then go on to the next game and allow it to happen. You need someone in there who’s going to grab people.”

    Thoughts?

    Kinnear - ER Groundsman should win 'Groundsman of the year award;

Leeds Managing Director Angus Kinnear has promised improvements will be made to Elland Road this Summer, starting with the reconstruction of the pitch.

"This process will start in the summer with the key technical element, a full reconstruction of the Elland Road playing surface," wrote Kinnear on Saturday.

"We had intended to do this last summer but the process takes 14 weeks and so simply couldn't be executed in a close season so dramatically shortened by the pandemic.

"The current Elland Road surface received justifiable criticism last year as the ancient drainage system was unable to deal with the torrential rain we experienced across December."

"The criticism should not be levelled at our head groundsman Kiel or his excellent staff," he said.

"They are managing a pitch which is 25 years old and suffering from decades of under-investment.

"The fact that the pitch is even playable is a testament to Kiel's skills and should win him a Groundsman of the Year award. Everyone at the club knows that with the right investment Kiel and his team will make the Elland Road surface the best in the country."

Don't need a new winger. We have too many.

I'd like a LB and a midfielder. I'd say a striker but he'd still play Bamford if we signed Lewandowski.

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has donated £5,000 to a local primary school to help children access remote learning during lockdown.

Beeston Primary School, located near Leeds' Elland Road stadium, says the money will be invested in technology that can be loaned out and will fund 20 iPads for "those who are most in need".

I’d like a LB and midfielder before a winger but at that price he’s worth a shot. Could also do with a backup striker to push Bamford. I know people would say we have a lot of wingers but I don’t currently see Poveda or Costa replacing Harrison and Raphinha so we need some better competition.

    Morning,

We have plenty of okay wingers, i'd only bring one in if they'll vastly improve our starting XI. Agree with emu, a LB and a midfielder would be my priority.

The Elland Road pitch does look bad but we're not the only ones with issues. I watched the Derby game last night and theirs is even worse than ours.

On my way to get the vaccine this morning, the end is in sight!

    Morning all :emoticon-0148-yes:

Agree with Emu and especially as Gray isn't in the same league as Harrison or Raphinah and even Costa. May be a cheap price but in 6 months it would be a freebie plus his wages is almost £3m per year to sit on the bench? Prefer to see how Poveda works out and not forgetting young Crycancio Summerville and Niall Huggins and McKinstry

Our Head Groundsman is a good lad and knows his stuff and the other problem he has is that he normally has a few pitches at TA that need setting up differently.
    • Make one a mirror of ER surface, which would mean digging holes and watering it for 3 weeks 24/7 <laugh>
    • Make one mirror St James’s Park
    • Make one Mirror the next away pitch and so forth
He isnt able to do any of that at the moment because all the pitches at Ta have been hammered too with bad weather. The last 3 U23s games have seen 3 pitches used and all 3 cut up badly and were heavy. So all the ground-staff are doing a great job in reality. I also get to know whats happening due to my nephew being head groundsman at Nice and before that he was the FA’s Head Groundsman at St Georges

    Morning all.

Of course we need an new winger if the player in question will improve the team. In fact we need upgrades in many positions so all good players are welcome regardless of what we already have.

Harrison, Costa, Poveda & Raphinha all fine on their day but also prone to inconsistency and if those wide players don't fire we tend to not score and lose the match.

I think the biggest story is still going under the radar, and we could do with getting the club to respond. So far Adam Pope has started joining some dots which could be a stretch or could be on the money. But we need Smyth at the YEP and Hay at the Athletic to get in amongst this.

    Doc said:
Lots if rumour coming out about a bust up and why he has gone to Norway? I believe the club hes joined already has an ex Leeds fitness coach? Adam Pope is now trying to link Arnott leaving with Gelhardts abscence, because young Joffy is not injured?

    Norways reply
Must be something like that, thought it was a strange choice going from Leeds to be an assistant coach at Strømsgodset. Yes, that is true. Aaron Horne is at the club already. It make you want to ask some questions about whats going on behind the scenes?

Just as a bit of background to the above post between myself and Norway (yesterday)
For weeks w wondered why Crycencio Summerville wasnt seen anywhere near the 23s. I heard he was injuredbut who knows as we get no reports about the academy. In the Summer we saw Richard Cresswell leave the club he was one of the heads of the academy and former Leeds player. His son Charlie is doing well in the 23s. We sawCarlos Corberan take the Huddersfield job and Mark Jackson promoted from U18s coach to U23s coach to replace Corberan. Arren Arnott who assisted Corberan stayed as assistant to Jacko. But it was announced yesterday Arrnott left the club to take a coaching job in Norway? Norwegian club announced his arrival saying arrnott was key in the link between the U23 players moving into the Bielsa first team set-up? We now have a key U23 player in Gelhardt who isnt injured but not been seen since before Xmas. summerville reappeared last week and Arrnott leaves?

Too many things make no sense. Why have we had 2 top academy players go missing for periods. Has their been a covid breach for example? Why has Cresswell and Arnott both walked out, is it because Cresswell was being managed by Bielsa, was Arnnott upset at Jacko moving above him.? Why would Arnott who came to us from the MLS and various top coaching jobs leave a Bielsa set-up and go to a Norwegian academy? Are we looking for issues that are not there and just coincidences or is there a problem at TA. We notice these things more because Summerville cost us almost £1m and Gelhardt cost us £1.3m rising to £3m, so when these players go missing?

    Morning all,

So I have just seen a piece from the Daily Fail. They are reporting Traore being linked with Arsenal & Liverpool after being priced out of a move to Leeds.

This has annoyed me as other than a couple of national rags reporting links between Leeds & Traore has this really ever been a thing? Has there been any word from Bielsa,Orta or anyone at the club hinting that we wanted Traore?

So the media have created a story out of nowhere and then created a story making Leeds United look bad compared to other clubs in my opinion.

This interview with Arnott by Focus on Leeds is a little bit telling. He states his ambition to be part of the England coaching team. He came to the club because of Bielsa and says he wants to learn more from Bielsa and has followed Bielsa since 2009 when he managing Chile. He also states he expects to stay at Leeds for a long time. Something has gone on here deffo

you are obviously up to speed with the u23's etc, and your assessments are usually spot on and i think you are onto something regarding the situation with this guy,it seems strange after his comments about bielsa. i suppose all will come out in the wash somewhere along the line.......i did catch a bit of the u23 match with stoke, and the boy kenneh looked as if he could be someone to keep a beady on, and he looks quite a unit.

Had to force myself to read this. This guy loves himself, perhaps, I must admit, justifiably. Who knows? Who cares?

He's all about developing himself into a better coach. He came to us to learn from Bielsa. Now he's leaving for a lesser position in a much lesser team. Unless they're paying him squillions, this is clearly (to me) a get-out-quick-before-you're-kicked-out move. It has all the hallmarks.

The only question for me is why he's getting kicked out.

Totally agree re wingers. I don't see Poveda or Costa bringing anything tangible to the first team which probably makes us short on adequate wingers.

Exactly and has been my question for a while now. Why I think Hay etc need to grab Bielsa or Kinnear and get answers. Where us Joffy? Why was Summerville missing for so long? Why has Arnott left and left the country to a much smaller job, when his ambition was to coach England?

WJ this bloke tweets a couple of times every week usually if any of the 23s score for their loan club, or make it to Bielsas bench etc. Nothing since Jan 13th a week ago. But you’re right he loves himself

Its also very tax efficient and will save him paying as much tax, so probably make more money than he gave. Cynical but factual
