1 Dempsey - apart from scoring Gills' best goal of the season, he made a great clearance near the end of the game - and was well 'up' for a game against his old club. 2. Graham - worked very hard -all over the pitch. We desperately need a forward to finish off his great crosses. 3. Bonham - made a couple of very good saves - and put him just ahead of several others . .
1. Dempsey 2. Graham 3. Slattery Great win, I certainly gave us no hope at Accrington. So well done, once again the main lads stealing the limelight along with the new lads. Despite a great win, and 3 points that see's us flirting with the middle of the table, I pose a dilemma... The first half of the season is now upon us, it see's us nicely settled in 12th place, whereas we are normally fighting a relegation battle at this time of the season. We have out-performed all my expectations, in the season of covid, where financial gain is as scarce as the weathermen predicting snow for the south. So what now and what of this dilemma. Well if you can achieve 12th, in the first half of the season, with the resources you have, and with Evans boasting today at the post match interview, the strength on the bench. Then we (the supporters) need to set his (Evans) target higher. We are but a mere seven points off the nearest play-off place, so why not? Let me tell you why not...Steve Evans get a STRIKER in! The one's you've got are NOT good enough. Let's not let todays win gloss over the real problem. You're supposed to be a winner, so don't settle for second best, because that is what you've got.
BRB - Don't start getting carried away ! Gills players are in L1 because - overall- they are not consistently good enough! - that doesn't mean that they can't raise their game to produce a bit of temporary 'form.' 1n the Relegation season, 2009-10, none of the top 8 sides were able to beat Gills at Priestfield. We won 5 and drew 3. Victories included wins against Leeds, Southampton, Millwall, Huddersfield as well as the opening day thrashing of Swindon ( 5-0 ), after which Gills were top of the league ! --- but -- of course, Gills lost too many games against the lower placed clubs to eventually get relegated -- despite the seemingly impossible likelihood on the last day of the season - at already relegated Wycombe ( what a miserable day ). In a 'reverse' example, in April 1970, Gills had to play the last game of the season at champions, Orient, and needed to win to avoid relegation. We beat them 2-1 to delay the inevitable for one season........ And in our League 2 winning season of 2012-13, we only secured the title with a totally unconvincing 2-2 draw at home to AFC Wmbledon - who needed a point to avoid going out of the EFL.... a feat that Barnet managed - despite beating Gills 1-0 at Priestfield. I am always happy when our temporary form extends to one match - but, I never expect more from players who simply are not good enough for 'greatness'........ I will gladly waste another £10 on Tuesday. I expect that Lincoln will win - but I hope that Gills at least will put in a decent effort.
Still don't know how we are in 12th position. The strikers been poor, defence average at best Bonham not as good as last season and apart from Graham and Dempsey midfield by passed. Considering that we could easily finish top 10 if we go on a run like end of last season which would be a great achievement
Yeah and before Wycombe, I remember the dogs abuse that Stimson got, none from me I hasten to add. At home no one could beat us, certainly out of the top sides, and I'm sure we all remember Leeds and Southampton. Yet we now accept mediocre. Not for me we don't, if Evans thinks he saw strength on the bench, then he needs to be achieving higher, personally I don't see that happening until he brings in a better striker. Like I said before, I don't care if it's from L1, L2 or National League, anyone, as long has they know where the ball is meant to go. If our strikers cannot score with the quality of Graham and Dempsey on the pitch, then they are never likely to score. Trouble is with us lot, we think one win fixes everything, it don't, it's still broke. Evans has until the closure of the transfer window to fix it.
I wouldn't compare our striker recruitment with buying Cadbury grade chocolate - but I expect the budget's much the same! ......and you know Gills will always end up with a pony ! ( is it wrong to laugh at one's own posts? ) - Yes, I know it's meant to be a unicorn - but 'Pony' sums up our strikers !
I am talking 'present' - not past ! The current batch of so-called strikers, hardly fill me with any confidence........... actually, 'pony' might have been the wrong comparison --- perhaps 'donkey' is more appropriate.
