Sun City/Sun FM was a good local radio station, the problem was the parent companies were taken over, so they just dropped down to being bog standard commercial stations with no real local content. The same happened to Metro and Centuary. Its why they all dropped the football coverage, a "national" broadcast with chart music is cheaper than local programming or sports coverage, even though that would bring in more listeners. Saying that, the 3 leg ends was always naff. Superdrunk and Brownlee being snidy about Sunderland because Centuary didn't get the SAFC broadcast rights, loaded phonecalls to make it look like Boro were a big club with loads of fans. God that was crap. Radio Newcastle has always been ****, but now its got no local competition to shame it into trying to be better.
Radio Newcastle has always been ****, but now its got no local competition to shame it into trying to be better. lets hope the ****ers get a sweat on now , its about time Sunderland had its own radio station about Sunderland and only for Sunderland fek the skunks, gone are the times we could have banter, they are only interested in taking the piss, the few genuine mag fans who come on here are the civilised ones who want discussion the rest are like feral rats, Its up to the locals now to support it, contribute, and make it a force to be reckoned with.
Same here and also BBC Look North television. Always dominated by Newcastle news. 90% of the time we don't even make the weather maps.
To be honest it's got worse over the years, more and more naff, pathetic stories because it's lazy and cheap journalism. My dad used to joke that there were so many Newcastle stories because they couldn't afford the bus fare to get anywhere further than the Tyne bridge. It's probably one of the reasons that so many geordies are insular, they only see and hear news about Newcastle. But local BBC is pathetic, Radio Newcastle used to have a small office/studio on Holmeside just down from the old Pzazz nightclub, but they closed it down close to 30 years ago for "cost savings". Sun City moved into it a couple of years later before they moved over to Sunderland Enterprise Park. A small office like that was ideal for small local stories to be passed on to and probably did more for the local community than they realised it did.
Sun City must have had a couple of sites because it was also just down from the Fort on the same side as Church Street garage. Remember my Dad having it on and you could see the presenter in the window,Dad said, "hear that bloke on the radio? that's him there". Sign was Blue and Yellow. Hopefully BBC Sunderland takes off, get the football on there and Sunderland phone ins. Be interesting to see if anyone on Radio Newcastle jump ship.
Sun FM should have been all over this years ago imo. More so when Real lost the football. But it all went to Newcastle where I find it lazy, they know they had all the Sport so just didn't try. I'd love a phone in with Kieran Brady hosting it. Don't need 3 or 4 in the studio all taking over each other. KB talks absolute sense and calls it like it is. No more John Anderson's nose breathing down the mic.
It would be even better if they could make a day of it and broadcast the away games live, i know the club do that but because of covid and people losing jobs money is tight at the moment, those that can afford the stream will do so, it will be a gained audience, not deprived through financial restraint, lets hope Krill reads these threads and decides to help one of the best supported clubs through this time of need.
I agree mate. Best footballing stuff was on Metro, G Force etc. used to love that. never missed a game on the radio then. Mite be a nostalgia thing but I remember listening the night we beat Bury and went up. they had put together an audio montage of the season with "cloud number 9" playing in the background. Guy Mowbray went to ITV after that but I can remember him swigging Champagne live on the radio at full time. was a lad of 14 playing fifa 98 on the ps1 but it sticks with me always.
Yeah, Guy Mowbray, Simon Crabtree, even Charles Harrison. Now we have Nick Barnes.... Anyone remember John Cairns on Radio Newcastle? Decent commentator, when he was sober! Rumour was he was sacked after drinking a bottle of whisky during a first half commentary at Roker once.
Anybody else remember Wear FM, precursor to sun, sun fm, sun-city, etc. Fairly crap iirc with old radio serials mixed in with the music, but, saturday mornings 9-12 had a football show. Les Mann, Bill Mantle and Graham Anderson (memory). Was required listening at the time (early 90s), and if you were going to an away game you taped it to listen to afterwards. That wasn't just me either, loads did. I'm sure I found one of those tapes a few year ago????
Didn't they offer an alternative transmission, using two empty cans of Stella and a very long piece of string?
I think home team takes FM and away team goes on DAB? Been a while since I listened tbh but from memory it's along those lines
