I was encouraged by the fightback yesterday.

I've been critical of the team this season for not showing enough spark and determination, the wins have sometimes seemed like they've been got with minimal effort at times.

I expected the game to run away from us at 2-0, especially in a competition that doesn't matter too much, so I'm impressed with the fight back. Fair play.

Grant McCann was delighted with the spirit and determination his side showed in fighting back from two goals down to stun Fleetwood.

Paddy Madden’s low finish and Wes Burns’ deflected effort looked to have put the Cod Army on course for the Papa John’s Trophy quarter-finals.

Mallik Wilks gave the Tigers a lifeline with 12 minutes remaining when he nodded in George Honeyman’s corner from close range.

It was from another Honeyman set-piece that Hull City equalised two minutes later, Keane Lewis-Potter stabbing home after Alfie Jones had hit the post with a header.

Just when the tie appeared destined for penalties, a Honeyman corner broke for ex-Fleetwood man Lewie Coyle to thunder an unstoppable effort into the top corner to secure a thrilling 3-2 win.

“I thought the players showed unbelievable spirit, drive and determination to come back from 2-0 down," said McCann.

“We were excellent in the second half. We got done with a free-kick, edge of the box, deflection, that put us 2-0 down.

“But the determination to come back and win the game was excellent from the players. You could see the drive in the second half – I thought it was excellent.

“It was thoroughly deserved for the second-half performance.

“I always felt if we got one back, we’d have a really good chance. It was nice to see Mallik pop up with that goal – a great ball from George (Honeyman) and excellent movement from Mallik to get on the end of it.

“We scored another goal from a set-play. Alfie probably should have scored when he hit the post but Keano was there to tap it in.

“The last one also came from a set-play – all three from George Honeyman. What a strike. Unbelievable strike.

“I wanted to run down the touchline when he whacked that in but unfortunately there were no fans here!

“It was a tremendous strike to get us into the next round.”

Should we really be giving him credit for learning from such an elementary mistake?!! Jeez, our bar is set low!! (maybe that's why Alfie's header didn't go in)

Andy Smith is a bit of a plain name for a current day young footballer, isn't it? Most of them are called Hartley Sebag-Fortescue or something similar these days.

That was the sort of winning goal that gives you immediate tumescence, though.

"The ferret is biting my finger," said a heavily wincing and grimacing Richard Whiteley.
"Its only playing," replied the ferret owner.
A classic bit of tv from yester year.

Watch Salam for each of our goals. He clearly has a job to do and does it well.

I see VAR is working well in South America in the River vs Palmaries Copa Libartores game. Ref gives a pen, taker puts the ball down, runs up, ref blows whistle, stops penalty, goes to the screen, disallows penalty.

I'll be honest, I was checking the results on Ceefax yesterday (up-to-date Erik, they call me) and had I not accidentally pressed the next page button I wouldn't have realised we'd won the game. The reason being that I had no idea we were even playing!

i noticed coyle's winner described as being from 25 yards out. The arc on the edge of the penalty area marks 22 yards at its limit. after watching the goal several times i reckon it was at least 27 yards and maybe as much as 30. any thoughts?

It was 30 yards, you can work it out from the stripes on the pitch. From the goal line the first one is the 6 yard box, the 3rd one is the edge of the penalty area, plus 2 more stripes.

Football's not gone metric has it?

Listening to ex player Brian Hughes commentary he would make an ideal coach for us.
Very thoughtful interesting analysis he has played at the top level of the game, he has his coaching badges and is a Hull City fan to boot
