    Right . . . . I've had enough !
You three (yes, all three) have temporarily ruined this very important thread . . . . temporarily 'cos it'll get back on track :emoticon-0148-yes:

I'm not in charge here, but I'm expected to restore order when it's lost, so the three of you are having a very short break from this . . . . please don't continue with the same bollocks after, or continue on another thread, for the sake of the board and other board members.

We do not want it to turn into another version of the Wild West . . . . where a few have left in favour of our civilised community :emoticon-0105-wink:

Thank you Gordon, what is happening in the US now is a warning to all western democracies, old and new. If we don't learn from the way Trumpism has given all far right political parties oxygen this sort of uprising will be a threat in western Europe for years to come. There will always be extreme right and extreme left activists in any true democracy but when the leader of a country takes a active part in pushing one side or the other then you will get the kind of anarchists like we saw last night coming to the fore because they feel empowered by the very people we look to to provide a safe environment in which to live our lives which is the first requirement of government.

To get back on topic I think Trump should be shoved to the sidelines and let Pence finish his term, never liked Pence but he has stood up this past couple of days and is doing the right thing. He would have been a far better president than the orange one he is covering for.

I think they've took his phone, internet and finger off the big red button so I hope he's now neutered.

He should be effectively back in his box. That being said if anyone is likely to find a loop hole it's Trump

So if the republicans controlled the senate he could have just done as he liked?

Just been doing some reading and it looks like he can still issue executive orders which can then be challenged by the supreme court if they are deemed unconstitutional.

He doesn't have a leg to stand on legally, he lost the election so no way will you see the army being called in or martial law getting enacted. He'd probably be arrested or sectioned if he tried imo as he has no credible support in the corridors of power. All he could do is give cow man and his pals a ring for another round of jingoistic shouting at a building.

The clip of this man. I don't know where to begin but being terrified that democracy is about to be over run isn't the first thought that springs to mind.

I agree it was always going to fail. That said, all those marching on Capitol Hill probably weren’t thinking that when they were doing it. The majority probably did think that they would force the senate or whoever it was to overturn the decision in favour of Trump. So you could say that it was an attempted coup irrespective of what the actual outcome was always going to be.

A bunch of raving cow men who all went home when it got dark is hardly the army you need for a coup imo. Never mind coup, I wouldn't even call it a riot, more a really severe case of civil disobedience. That does not make it an attempted coup, you need the army on board to be pulling that stunt and even then, unless you have most of them it will still fail. See Turkey and Erdogan for a good recent example of that.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, has already said the military do not get themselves involved in US domestic politics. I can't remember what nonsense Trump was spouting at the time but this speech was seen in some quarters as a response to him and it concerns just who it is that the us army makes an oath to, and it's not an individual, it's to the constitution. He pretty much hammers that point home.
