My wife asked me if I wanted to watch Batman Forever on Netflix. I said, “No, only for the next couple of hours.”
Four New Forest ponies killed by a car, last night. Three donkeys and two sheep have been killed on the same road in the last three weeks. https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/18981141.four-ponies-killed-latest-accident-roger-penny-way/
A man walked into a car showroom. He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.” Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.” The man replied, “You have now mate".
May or may not be true, but I've always said don't let the truth get in the way of a good story. please log in to view this image On December 31, 1899, the passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a celestial computation of their exact position and brought Captain John DS. Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo's position was LAT 0º 31' N and LONG 179 30' W. “Know what this means?" First Mate Payton broke in, "We're only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line". Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime. He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ship's position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather & clear night worked in his favor. At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line! The consequences of this bizarre position were many: The forward section (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & in the middle of summer. The aft (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter. The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899. In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900. This ship was therefore not only in: Two different days, Two different months, Two different years, Two different seasons But in two different centuries - all at the same time. Quite remarkable.
Earth 'has been lucky' to support life for 3 billion years, study says | Science & Tech News | Sky News A recent study involving multiple simulations has demonstrated that the chance of a planet maintaining life for 3 billion years (as Earth has) is remote....the conclusion is that we have been lucky. This also suggests that life on other planets surviving eons is unlikely. I have always questioned those scientists throwing out figures suggesting the number of habitable planets is huge....I have always suspected it is far lower than calculated because of the random events that Earth has suffered and survived. Glad to have some support for my theory that we are just lucky, lucky, lucky. The dinosaurs dominated the Earth for millions of years and were so successful at what they did that there would have been no chance of a technological species arising until they were virtually wiped out. And the chance that we exist at the same time as another technologically advanced species on another planet must be so infinitesimal as to be not worth considering....bearing in mind how short a time we have been the dominant species compared with the time that life in any form has been on Earth. We exist in the blink of the eye and the Universe will carry on turning without us. Brian Cox said recently that we are part of the Universe as we are made of star dust, so as scientists try to understand how everything ticks, the Universe is studying itself.
I heard Brian Cox recently saying that the probability of more than one planet capable of sustaining life in each galaxy was infinitesimal.
And on top of that, the chance of that life being at the technology stage reduces it further....and the chance of being at the same stage as us at the same time as us bearing in mind the age of the Universe is practically non-existent. In other words, we are effectively alone and wonderfully unique. We (and our planet) are truly precious in a vast Universe. Not being morbid, but actually being positive.....Earth has survived several extinctions and recovered...I am confident that life will continue in some form whatever happens to us.
