    AP, we're going to be doing as much as we can to avoid anything remotely British! Wanting to experience the real europe. Not just stay with fellow Brits!

    Although, it'd be cool to meet 5-1, and Skapal for a swift pint <ok>

    Did it myself once, similar circumstances to your mate (running from an ex) intention was to never come back and ended up working bar in Corfu for a while. Have to admit its a hell of an experience, seat of your pants travel, would recommend everyone tries it once. Have a fab time and cherish every moment :D

    Have you any idea of your intended itinery? I'm sure people like me, and OT, who have travelled extensively in Europe, over the years, could maybe point you in the direction of good palces to go.

    For example, if you end up in Germany, get yourselves down to Freiburg, in the Swartzwald (Black Forest). Fabulous medieval City, with cobbled pedestrianised centre, dominated by the massive Munster (cathedral) which resembles York Minster.

    Cleanest air I've ever experienced, fantastic "Sound of Music" scenery just a few miles away, and great beer. Try Rothaus Pils, or Dunkelbeer if you like dark beer rather than lager.

    Bon voyage, and keep us posted, from time to time, via internet cafes.

    Hmmm, maybe I should do the same. In all seriousness, have a great time mate. Speaking to people who took a gap year before uni and went travelling, they all had the time off their lives.
