FORGOTTEN man Nyron Nosworthy is enduring the worst time of his career after dropping out of the first-team picture at Sunderland. The 30-year-old defender has not played for the Black Cats since the 2-0 defeat at Everton in January last year and, after spending last season on loan at Sheffield United, now finds himself in limbo with no club on the horizon to take him on loan and no future at the Stadium of Light. He told the Echo: âItâs incredibly disappointing because I love playing football and at the moment itâs just not happening. âI understand Iâm not in the managerâs plans at Sunderland and a loan would be the best idea but it isnât as easy as it seems to get a new club. âPeople might think you just walk out of one and into another but itâs not as simple as that, especially in the current situation in football.â The writing has been on the wall for some time now for a player who played a key role in Sunderlandâs promotion from the Championship in Roy Keaneâs first season in charge and who won the Player of the Season award for 2006-07. He figured less and less in the first team after Steve Bruceâs arrival, culminating in that bad day at Goodison, which led to him spending two lengthy spells out on loan at Sheffield United. This season though Nosworthy has been unable to find a club willing to take him off Sunderlandâs hands, though he remains hopeful with high-flying League One side MK Dons making an enquiry earlier in the season. He said: âItâs frustrating because Iâve never had this in my career before and so itâs unusual and difficult. âItâs certainly the biggest challenge of my career, thereâs no doubt about that, âThereâs a first time for everything I guess but I just have to take it and deal with it and keep on giving my best because at the end of the day Iâm still employed by Sunderland and I have to make sure that Iâm as fit as I can be for whatever the club might ask of me.â Nosworthy at least got a rare run-out for the reserves this week and is relieved to be featuring in some form of competitive football. âItâs nice to dust the cobwebs off a bit and do my very best to stay fit,â he said. âThatâs all I can do at the moment, be professional, keep myself right and continue looking to do my best. It was good too to get a win with the reserves, it was a good, competitive game and the lads did well to get a 3-1 win. âItâs hard to be at your peak when you are not playing but at least I got 90 minutes this week and thatâs going to help keep me ticking over.â Sunderland had something of a defensive crisis last week in the game against West Brom with Titus Bramble ruled out and Michael Turner still struggling for fitness but it spoke volumes about Nosworthyâs situation at the club that he did not even feature in the squad â 18-year-old central defender Louis Laing being preferred in his place. The biggest obstacle in the way of a loan move is the Premier League wages the player is on after signing a two-year contract extension but that deal is set to end next summer and the Londoner will become a free agent. Just not good enough, sad but true.
I have a soft spot for Nos and reckon he could get a game in the championship no bother, we'll find out next summer, but the thing is Commachio it's no good him wingeing about his situation when all he has to do is ask Ellis if he can terminate his contract and then go and get a game elsewhere. What he really means is "I'm not prepared to take a pay cut for the duration of my contract at SAFC." That's fine and I understand it but he can't complain when he can make a decision to fix his situation. If I was unemployed reading this it would proper upset me like
Although I think Nos is a liability at times, I feel he may be less of a liability than Turner is at the moment due to his serious lack of pace..
E If Nos steps foot onto the pitch wearing a Sunderland top again, we really will be in **** straights. He could find a club tomorrow but won't give up the money he is on here to not play. Who then really gives a **** whether he is miserable or not? It's his decision at the end of the day. The club are not asking a fee. Let him rot in the reserves until next year for me.
What, someone backing Nos? Turner is missing match sharpness atm, but I dont think he suffers for a lack of pace. People seem to have forgotten what a good partnership he and Bramble formed until injuries hit. Having said that, I have always liked Nosworthy. His speed more than made up for any mistakes he made, cos when he made them he could generally get back fast enough to put it right.
Not at all mate: I just feel that Turner has totally lost it since his injury, and is therefore even more of a liability than Nos would be..
Turner got stick for his performance against wba but Longs goal had more than a hint of good fortune and not many cb's would have caught him. Although I think Brown has been exceptional this year he has had a hand in two goals we've conceded in the last two games. To easily beaten in the air by two Morrisons
I remember him coming on as a sub for Stephen Wright, home to Charlton, first game of 2005/6. Remember saying to my mate, on the way home, "I honestly think that I've just seen the worst player ever to play in the Premier League". He did improve, though. A bit!
