My (limited) understanding is that since April this virus has been mutating regularly which is apparently perfectly normal and nothing to be alarmed about. I think this strain was discovered in the UK in September and then in October they started to monitor it. They discovered it's high transmissible rate when one of the areas down South went into lockdown and the R number didn't go down and started to rise at an exponential rate. It was discovered through testing that most people there had the new strain of the virus. I think they're saying it originated in Kent.

Yes, that's right they've blocked the drivers, hence the trucks, goods and freight also become stuck here/there, which means they cannot return to collect/deliver further produce or if their drivers are refusing to cross, it impacts in the same way, that it delays produce from the EU and will affect them financially, unless the insurance companies pick up the tab or alternative routes are found.

Someone from infectious diseases representing the European Commision of Public Health has stated the new strain is already in Europe, and banning incoming freight drivers will not do anything to prevent that spread, especially as most of them are isolated within their cabs a majority of the time, with provisions on board.

Another went on to say that the UK are good at identifying these strains, hence it transponded they also get the blame for it originating from here, which is not necessarily the case. A bit like blaming the Spanish for Spanish Flu was one example given.

As far as i'm concerned it's Macron being a tit.

We are good at identifying the strains Saff, that does not necessarly mean it originated here. Although if it did, from my perspective it makes no difference, it's already spread, and will likely become the dominant strain throughout the UK and Europe.

I went for a horse ride in Jamaica and after that I think I'd make a brilliant jockey tbh. I'm pretty much half way there, now.

I doubt they'll ever be able to say with certainty that it originated here. I'm just going by the reports that it was discovered in London and Kent, a few month back and started to increase rapidly. It still wasn't showing up in other areas of the UK until a few later and was highly concentrated in Kent. I also agree with you, though. It might not have started there as it would just take one person to take it into the area and then it's off.

It will be in every country now and probably has been for a little while. What these countries are doing by trying to isolate us is probably all for nothing as it will already be on their soil and spreading through the populations.

I agree Saff. I'm even more than happy to accept it started in Kent, as you say, it's already spread, nothing is going to stop it now.

Yes we have identified it here but only in returning citizens who have come back from the UK and are in two week mandatory hotel quarantine.

The EU has said that non essential travel to and from the UK for it's 27 member nations should be discouraged. BUT...essential travel should be facilitated.

I think that's fair enough. That's all I was asking for from Macron. There will be COVID tests for lorry drivers, not sure how that is going to be implemented at the mo.

Covid tests are great, but you can still spread covid before you can test positive for it.

Also 1/3 people with covid test negative for covid. Lots of false negatives.

Obviously I think it's good goods can move into and out of Britain again, but tests won't stop the new strain from spreading
