Wenger has produced great success for this club and it'd be a shame for him to leave at a time the opinion we have of him has lowered as much as it has. Wenger has been loyal to the club in that he obviously had the ability to leave for a 'larger' team during his 15 years spell - although I think the powerful position he has had with almost full control was too tempting to leave. He is proud of not breaking contracts but I believe his goal now is to turn the club around more for his legacy rather then the sake of the team. His needs appear to come before that of the the club? * Why not strengthen his backroom staff? It wouldn't take any of the glory he craves just look at the number of coaches Alex Ferguson has had over the years. * Why not invest? I know we will never know the truth about the transfer budget/wage structure but he chooses not to sign players based on principal? If it's not your money who cares if you're spending 2-3M on the extra quality needed (Xabi Alonso, Schwarzer, Cahill) * Tactics have never been his strong suit but I can't remember someone being so stubborn as to play 1 system regardless of the starting 11, opponents or position in a game. Throw on a forward when you're 2-1 down with 10 minutes to go Wenger will never quit, he's like a guy at the black jack table who's down 50,000 but keeps playing because he thinks he can cover his losses and get back on top. Unfortunately he can't which means the club will have to ask him to move on/upstairs for his reputation as much as for the future of the team.
Sigh I cant agree with any of this. Although i've critised Wenger alot lately one thing he is'nt guilty of is 'only looking out for himself' The guy has done exactly what he believes is the right thing for Arsenal. (wether he was right or not is another thing) If he was after personnal glory why would he have any issues with spending money? He would just do a Redknapp and get as much cash from the board as possible. Why would he spend such a huge amount of his time setting up and improving our scouting network/youth policy? - most of this wont benefit anyone in the short term. I have alot of qualms with the way Wenger has gone about things recently but i do honestly believe that he's the least selfish manger around. This is a guy who turned down France, England and Real Madrid in order to continue at Arsenal.
Wenger is stubborn, egotistical, mistaken, and not very tactically astute. But he is not staying at Arsenal and enduring what is clearly painful for merely his reputation. The poor chap is deluded into thinking there is no alternative to the strategy of a miserly paying off the debt, and allowing the quality of playing staff to diminish. In my opinion if he had confronted the owner(s) several years ago and said he would not continue without much better player investment, he would still be in the job.
Me?? Not really, he made the point of why didn't we spend the extra money for Schwarzer, so i wanted to know if he would prefer him over chesney (which would be the point of spending that extra money to buy him)
the subject is 'Wenger is only looking out for himself ' Not who might he have signed - dozens were rumoured.
I think the point being made is that had wenger being looking out for himself money would have been wasted on bringing schwarzer in while chez sits in the stands! But I agree that maybe wenger is ironically hurting the club by trying to do best for it! He wants to create a winning team as well as a profitable club! he was ignorant to meeting the two half way by not spending money!! sticky situation and im sure there is much more thats gone on behind the scenes which has contributed to the situation!
One can accuse Wenger of anything but being selfish. If he thought about himself only he would have been ManCity manager by now, earning twice as much and winning titles, easily.
Wow you can't be any more wrong. If anything Wenger cares too much about the club and is not selfish about results and results only. Most managers focus on the coaching and let people that are not up to standard do their stuff. Wenger gives everything he has into all sorts of stuff at the club. He has spent the clubs money like its his and that is not the act of a selfish man. He could have left us many times for massive clubs. The coaching changes you ask for is not being done because Wenger is a loyal man and he is loyal to his staff. Again, not the act of a selfish man.
I hear you on several points mate, your loyalty is admirable. That said don't you think that in some ways, his intense loyalty to his coaches and paymasters is now starting to hurt both the club and himself. Some small changes even in coaching staff might be the breath of fresh air and new ideas to bring us out of this hole. He does not need to sack people but needs to make some badly needed additions, his stubborness and refusal to take on any external advice or assistance will result in his demise and will only lengthen the recovery period to get us back to where we all want to be. Wenger right now is still the man for the job for me, but i need to see real improvement soon or at least the willingness to make changes in order for this to happen. I think most genuine long time Arsenal fans would be of this opinion and it's reflected on here day in day out. It's now time for Wenger to Sh1t or get off the pot , we cannot go on in this miserable mire of frustration for much longer. Arsene really needs to change his pitchside manner also as it's not portraying a good image for our club. John Cleese would be proud of some of his antics, perhaps he should take a branch to some of our underperforming players!
He is selfish in that he wants to prove everyone right that his way is the right way, but there is thin line between it being selfish and him just being stubborn. I'm not sure selfish for personal gain is what he is about, but selfish to be seen to be right is something that I think describes his behaviour
